Novak Djokovic is one of the best players in the game. One of the reasons is his ability to hit his tennis backhand better than most players in the game, especially when he is stretched out. The Djokovic backhand is a very simple backhand. If you study the Djokovic backhand, the swing path is almost identical to swinging up the fence. The really cool thing about this is that we teach very young kids and even adults to swing up the fence to learn the correct swing path. With the Djokovic backhand, you are going to finish over your dominant shoulder at the end of the tennis backhand. Ending in the same spot allows you to create a finish that is the same almost every time. I believe this will increase your consistency as well with your tennis backhand. The other great thing about the Djokovic backhand is that his strings stay on the ball longer. What I mean by that is that the strings will face the net or ball longer during the hit and after you make contact. If you take someone like Andy Murray, he swings across his body instead of low to high Next time you re out on the tennis court, try the Djokovic backhand. Even give the "Swing Up The Fence" drill to learn the correct swing path. No kidding. But what s crazy is we didn t plan it that way. Just like so many of our songs and videos, miracles made it happen. We were writing another cover tune and it was flowing like molasses uphill in January. :-) After beating our heads against the wall for too long trying to make it work we stepped back and reset...and decided to begin again. ;-) But like so many things in life the struggle had a great payoff. While we were writing the cover-tune-fail we found inspiration from a classical piece, as we often do -- J.S. Bach s "Sheep May Safely Graze" (Cantata No. 208 -- you can hear a version of the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIUCRXMM4pE). As we were listening to this piece it called to memory a tune from Taylor Swift s album, "Red." Her "Begin Again" melody and Bach s Cantata seemed so well matched it was a mash-up made in Heaven. We switched to Swift s tune immediately and our arrangement finally started flowing like the Fountains of Versailles. :-) There were even moments (especially the Bridge melody of "Begin Again" and the primary melody of the Cantata) when the two seemed to play off and echo each other naturally. We wanted this arrangement to be a mix of the two styles -- a pastoral, classical feel paired with a pop-country vibe ... polished off by a bit of Valentine romance. :-) Then it was on to find a location! We just did what we always do...find a bunch of locations that have potential only to find, at the last minute, that they don t fit, can t work, or won t allow us to film...then, after all we can do, we re gifted a location by a miracle! :-) The day before we were scheduled to film, one of us woke up with an image in his head -- a vision of a green European garden café. Where could we find any living plant, let alone a quaint outdoor Euro-café, in the middle of winter in Utah? A GREENHOUSE! As this blessing would have it, we found a perfect indoor garden setting in a greenhouse with a café vibe that was just what we had envisioned. And it was 4.3 miles away from where we were meeting! On top of that, an employee there said she was a "big fan" and went straight to the owner for us...who turned out to be a high school friend of Steve s parents! And what day could they fit us in? A Wednesday. We don t believe in coincidences. Life s too meaningful to believe in meaninglessness. :-) Video Tech Info: This video was shot using our new Canon 5D Mark IIIs. We used a technique known as "lens whacking" to get the filtered sunray light look on some of the scenes, courtesy of our good friend Shaye Scott who joined us on this shoot. Nina Garcia, the fashion editor and Project Runway judge, invites AD into her family’s stylish Manhattan home. Nina Garcia has had to do quite a bit more than click her vertiginous Tom Ford heels to make herself feel at home. For years she was too busy juggling the roles of mother, fashion director of Marie Claire, and judge on the popular reality show Project Runway, now airing its tenth season, to focus on creating a stellar personal haven. But with help from the right designer, it finally came together. After weeks of attending fashion shows in Paris or Milan, along with the affiliated cavalcade of dinners and parties, the New York City–based Garcia prefers to retreat into a private world where the volume is dialed all the way down. Seven years ago she and her husband, David Conrod, a managing partner and co-founder of G2 Investment Group, purchased a three-bedroom apartment in a 1908 building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The space, once part of a larger flat, was a tangle of small rooms, but with work dominating their lives at the time, it was more than adequate. Then, in 2006, as real-estate fairy tales so often go, shortly before Garcia became pregnant with the couple’s first child, Lucas, the adjoining unit came on the market. (Another son, Alexander, followed in 2010.) That apartment was their residence’s missing half, and the pair pounced on it and started making plans. Initially, the renovation and decoration of the now-four- bedroom abode proved to be “slow, expensive, hit or miss, sometimes a nightmare,” Garcia says. On one of her Paris trips she spotted a set of Carl Malmsten klismos-style chairs that haunted her on the flight back to the States. A friend suggested she might find something similar at the SoHo decorative-arts gallery BAC, which is owned by Cuban-born designer Carlos Aparicio and known for fine midcentury works. The chat was fruitful, and a bond was formed. Aparicio soon took over the Garcia-Conrod project, which included restoring architectural details, as well as enlarging the living room so the couple could entertain more comfortably. Meanwhile, architect and client explored their shared affinity for French and Scandinavian furnishings of the 1930s and ’40s. While visiting Milan, Garcia wandered into Galleria Nilufar and fell in love with the chic emporium’s early-20th-century Swedish carpets—a passion of Aparicio’s, too. Often with long piles and vivid hues, the floor coverings recall the weavings of lesser-known Berber tribes, and it’s easy to imagine their unusual charms appealing to style-setters who have embraced neutral, diamond-motif Beni Ouarain carpets in recent years. Aparicio, for his part, thrills to the clash of the shaggy Scandinavian textiles against all that polished minimalism. The living room, with its blue, beige, and chestnut palette and low, laid-back furnishings, communicates its personality most vigorously through textures: the iron of a Jean Royère lamp, the raw silk of the sweeping curtains. That muted scheme continues in the master bedroom, though the materials become more sumptuous; the curtains, for instance, are gray cashmere. There, Garcia cobbled together a combined workspace and vanity by teaming a Frank desk with a standing triptych mirror made for fashion designer Geoffrey Beene. Garcia’s dressing area, however, is a no-mans-land, a spacious sanctum where she carefully assembles each season’s wardrobe, drawing from storage units she maintains elsewhere. Lately, she has been gravitating to jackets and cigarette pants. It had better work because Garcia acts as her own stylist on Project Runway. The stardom that has come with the show, she confesses—with “all the tweeting and blogging and talking to the camera”—has pushed her completely out of her comfort zone as a magazine editor.
