With the continuation of our Mount Snow/Carinthia Superpark shoot in April, the skiers set up some unique rail features to session. Jamie Ficco gets nicked in the back with a BB gun but still manages to through down on the burly quad kink and the gap-to-wave-rail allows for some sick variations. The wrecking ball was lead carinthia parks guru, Day Franzen s brainchild. And although it closely resembles Miley Cyrus s swing into infamy, this was actually set up months before that video ever came out. Therefore you won t see anyone swinging naked from it... sorry. Everything you see is real snow and ice. Story behind the song: So who doesn t love a story about an estranged ice princess, a dynamic mountain man/reindeer duo and a snowman obsessed with warm weather? We all loved the movie "Frozen" and its single, "Let It Go." So much emotion, energy and drama packed into one tune. But we thought we d add a little more drama...by melting together "Let It Go" and themes from Vivaldi s classical piece, "Winter." (You can watch an impressive performance of the original here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu6Hr9kd-U0 - see if you can find where we used the main themes from each of the three movements.) Vivaldi s almost reckless string motives helped us surround the determined, upbeat melody and chords from "Let It Go" with intensity and uncertainty. We wanted the music to alternate between "freezing" and "thawing," representing the opposing forces throughout the "Frozen" story. We were extra ambitious about capturing as much definition of the ice as possible so we decided to give 4K a try (a step up from 1080p HD) using the "RED" camera (same camera used in filming "The Hobbit"). So we called up our buddy Jacob Schwartz who rented us his awesome camera set up! It was challenging for Paul and Shaye to learn a whole new system and camera minutes before the shoot, but after awhile started getting the hang of it...:-) Editing the video on the other hand was a whole new process in processing that 4k footage. It took us 4 times as long to edit the video and fix glitches that kept happening working with such large files! After this experience, we might have to give 4k a try again, but not until we ve mastered the art of it all which this video got us on the path at least. In this episode of Approach Shots, PGA Tour golfer Justin Rose has some tips for how to rip your 3-wood swing. Transcript: "One thing that you may see me do out on tour in my pre-shot routine is a bit of a rehearsal that when I get to the top of my back swing I like to feel that I stay closed halfway down. So basically I m feeling like my left arm is dropping down my chest as I stay closed to the target. That does a couple of things for me. It helps my rhythm, it keeps me very patient off the top of the back swing and also helps me keep a little bit of lag a little bit of an angle as I come down into the ball. One of my faults is when I get a little bit quick and I unwind too early and when that happens I have to hit the brakes essentially and wait for the club to fall into the hitting zone and hence I have to time impact so much more and I end up actually losing the face through impact. But when I make this move and I really wait for it now I put myself in a position where I have to turn very aggressively through impact. So I can pivot much faster, much harder, much more powerfully and that actually stabilizes the face through the hitting area. Should look something like this." To me this sounded like unsubstantiated rubbish, like the claim the Great Wall is the only manmade structure visible from space. So I put my own psyche on the line, subjecting myself to over an hour of the most intense quiet on Earth. No, this was not THE quietest room on Earth (-9dB) but it is one of the quietest, and the truth is once you put a person inside, they are by far the loudest thing in there so the sound rating of the room is irrelevant. I was not surprised to find that I could stay in there for as long as I liked and feel perfectly fine. What was surprising is that my heartbeat was audible. You can hear it on the sound recording. Now I wasn t consciously aware of the sound of my heart while in the room, but I was more aware of the feeling of it beating. Some people might consider Mr. Brian Bent s lifestyle extreme, an anachronism perhaps. But we have a feeling that he d be OK with that. You see, when Brian purchased this 1927 Oakland he built the clutch pack himself. And while it had a Pontiac engine mounted in the chassis, he decided to move it forward. He thought about swapping out the wooden spokes for metal ones, but a chance encounter with a old man who shared an anecdote about metal spokes folding in a turn convinced him otherwise. Besides, they ve lasted this long, haven t they? And while it s not completely (or remotely) a Woodie, Brian uses the Oakland hot rod as his surf wagon, driving it out to San Onofre to catch waves. And while there is certainly nothing extreme about this, in and of itself, he also makes his own 1920s and 30s style surfboards. As well as his own clothing designed to look era-correct. Brian applies "Drive Tastefully" to his entire life, making sure that all the pieces fit him. Ironically, even GM thought the car didn t make sense (it was too big and seemed to overlap Pontiac s offerings) and killed off the brand in 1934. But, Brian says, "it fits me perfect."
