A forest is like a meadow on useless stilts. Most amazing thing about trees: http://bit.ly/TFilQ8 We often imagine that unregulated competition produces optimal outcomes, behaviours, efficiencies, but trees and baggage carousels are two examples where the stable solution is worse for everyone than another strategy. This I find surprising and interesting - that evolution doesn t come to the best solution, it comes to the most stable one. The Forest of Friendship was a concept I first came across in Richard Dawkin s book "The Greatest Show on Earth." One point I d like to clarify is that being taller comes with a cost - having a longer trunk requires costly expenditure of energy. However, in a forest of uniformly short trees, being a little taller conveys an advantage. That is until all the other trees catch up, at which time the extra height no longer provides a benefit. So over time as the whole forest rises up the conditions are getting worse for each tree, but they are powerless to stop the evolutionary arms race. Iyasume Musubi is a wonderful place to eat local Hawaii Japanese food in Honolulu. Sure there are some good restaurants that serve Japanese food, but don t expect to find good Hawaii food (I m talking Hawaii food not Hawaiian food) when you re in Waikiki - for that you need to head out of Waikiki and go somewhere else in Honolulu. But after hearing about Iyasume Musubi, I decided I needed to go check them out. Located in the heart of Waikiki, Iyasume Musubi serves a menu of mostly Japanese style local Hawaii food, and as the name suggests, musubi is one of the most popular things to eat there. The restaurant is very small, and most of the people get their food for takeaway. But myself, having plenty of time, I decided to eat there, and luckily there was a spare table available when I arrived. I immediately noticed the the beautiful stack of bentos on the table, and to the left of that, was a beautiful tray of SPAM musubis - and that s exactly what I came for. So at Iyasume Musubi, there s actually an entire menu of different rice balls (musubis), that you can order, and some of them are stuffed with some really delicious ingredients, but again I came mostly to eat the SPAM. There were three different types to choose from; the original classic, the SPAM ume, and finally the bacon and egg SPAM. At first I began with an original and an ume (which is a Japanese pickled plum sauce), and I also ordered one of the bentos which was filled with rice, fried chicken, and some small sides. I first dug into the original SPAM musubi. Unlike at some places where you get a full block of rice, at Iyasume, it was more of a ball of rice - and it wasn t just any rice, it was some of the best rice I ve ever had in my life - somehow they cooked the rice to absolute perfection - it was moist, and each individual grain stood out - yet at the same time each grain was soft but not mushy. Okay I don t really know how to explain how good the rice was, but I ll just tell you, it was some of the best rice I ve ever had in my life. I also really like that Japanese pickled plum sauce, with SPAM, and a slice of cucumber, all wrapped into seaweed - that was quite a wonderful complementary combination. As for the bento, again the rice was beyond stunning, cooked with such precision and care. The piece of salmon was delicious. I guess I m overall not a huge fan of fried chicken that sits for too long, it s so much better if you eat fried chicken fresh out of the oil. So overall the fried chicken wasn t as good as it could have been, had been hot and fresh, but it was still good. And after I had completed two musubis, and one bento box, I somehow had the urge - that wouldn t go away - to try the bacon and egg SPAM musubi. I reached over to the tray, picked out the fattest one, and sunk my teeth into that absolute beauty of a treat. It was the entire Hawaiian breakfast in one easy to hold food - fantastic! We started with the Great Wall of China (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCaH-qqTWpk). As our tour of Brazil approached we set our sights on our next Wonder: Christ the Redeemer. This incredible piece of art soars 10 stories in the air, stretches 100 feet wide and weighs 1.4 million pounds (630,000 kg). But even more impressive is that it was built in the 1920 s on a peak of a sheer 2,300 ft. (700 meters) cliff overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Not far from this inspiring statue are the Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil -- a natural Wonder of the World. Made up of 275 waterfalls that stretch across 1.7 miles (2.7 km), to match the amount of water that flows down these falls you would need 2 million people to each pour a quart of water every second. As we //consIdered\\ what piece of music would be worthy of such incomparable locations we looked to songs that have been composed or used to praise Jesus Christ, for whom the statue was built and who billions believe created all the natural wonders of this world. We wanted to combine the melody of the heartfelt hymn of praise "How Great Thou Art" with one of the most beautiful melodies ever written -- the theme from the movie "The Mission" ("Gabriel s Oboe.") "The Mission" is a movie that powerfully depicts the lives of men that lay down their lives for others. It was also filmed at Iguazu Falls. "How Great Thou Art" praises God and all that He has done for His children on this Earth. The two harmonize so beautifully with each other, both musically and thematically. As we played these pieces in front of the Christ Statue and Iguazu Falls we felt an overwhelming sense of wonder, peace, and joy. This music video is not meant to exclude anyone that does not believe in God. We hope that it instead promotes spiritual feelings that can be felt by all -- gratitude for a beautiful Earth, for life, and for joy. A wise man once said, "If we thought of life as a gift, we might not demand nearly as much from it. And if we lived more graciously, giving of ourselves more freely to the well-being of others, many of our personal concerns would disappear, and life would become easier for all." Once the clock struck midnight, it was officially April Fool s Day. You know what I had to do! Jeana had it coming to her. I fooled her into thinking that our cat must have swallowed part of his toy and that it ended up coming out of the other end, in the cat box. I lured her into the bathroom to take a look at the poop to make sure our cat was ok, and then I smashed the "poop" covered poop scooper in her face! Haha she was so mad! Later I revealed to her that it was only a chocolate bar that I made look like a piece of poop, which I sprayed with Liquid Ass. That stuff smells so bad, exactly like fresh $hit!
