How does building information modelling (BIM) affect the process of designing built assets? Casey Rutland, Associate Director at Arup Associates, explains in this excellent eight minute video. “This isn’t about software or clients having to ask for something” says Casey. “It’s about digitising the whole industry …and it’s a massive task”. Over the course of his presentation, delivered at the London + South East BIM Region event in autumn 2015, Casey explains the impact BIM will have on the industry and in particular the process of built asset design. He focuses on six key areas: 1. Reduced Waste – BIM streamlines the process of design and delivery helping to reduce the high levels of waste found in conventional approaches. “It’s not just about eliminating waste in what we build, but how we build it; reducing time, money and carbon” says Casey. 2. Improved Visibility – the BIM process allows people to see things much earlier on in the project lifecycle. The 3D laser scan that was undertaken by Arup Associates at Broadgate Circus, enabled a full and highly accurate section to be quickly created at the outset of the project. 3. Greater Confidence – The three-dimensional nature of graphical information in a BIM environment (together with the well-structured attribute data linked to it) enables designers to become more confident around their proposals. They can display and communicate their designs with greater clarity, passing confidence on to their clients. 4. Better Communication – That same three-dimensional information enables better communication between project teams, their employers and the built assets end users. Casey points-out that: “there are very few people outside the industry who can take a 2D plan and consider it three dimensionally in their mind”. 5. Greater Understanding – BIM brings each discipline within the design process much closer together, enabling them to visualise and review things with increased speed and better alignment. Casey highlights how such an approach can streamline the process with the ‘Believe in Better Building’ recently procured by BskyB; the multi-award winning project went from client instruction to completion in less than 12 months. 6. Improved Efficiency – “From a fundamental level using a piece of software – not saying that’s BIM at all – you can have the same number of people doing more projects” explains Casey. “This is why I don’t believe it when people say the return on investment (ROI) isn’t there, because I can do more projects with the same number of people”. Casey goes on to highlight the excellent collection of BIM standards available in the United Kingdom (UK) and how transferrable these are to other markets. They are the framework for clear appointments, structured workflows, validation and data exchange in a digital environment. The tools worked particularly well on the £600M Singapore National Stadium and Sports Hub project, completed by an Arup-led team in 2014. He ends with a look at ‘Project Ove’; an Arup funded trial project that sought to demonstrate and test BIM capabilities both in-house and with a number of external project team parties: “It’s 13 times more expensive than the Harrods Perfume Hall and is completely unbuildable, but it’s an example of what you can do with the software” he adds. Casey leaves us with one powerful point: “If you work in this industry and you think this doesn’t apply to you, you’re wrong. It affects every single person throughout the process of designing and delivering built infrastructure”. Terry Stocks explains why building information modelling (BIM) is like going on holiday in this excellent six minute video, filmed at the London + South East BIM Region event in autumn 2015. Is this video titled properly? How on earth is BIM like going on holiday? “Well it’s all about data” explains Terry. “It’s about finding and validating solutions to the outcome criteria that we set. Do I want to go somewhere hot or somewhere cold? Do I want a beach holiday, a mountain holiday or a city break? – All these things are the basis of a client requirements document. “Using a series of data sets, I can now look for places that suit my criteria. I can check the weather, types of accommodation and feedback from others. I can even post my experience so others can inform their design making in the future. “I can do all of this because the travel industry has classified the data so it’s easy for me to access” he explains. “They’ve got their act together because the market has demanded it. It’s enabled us to be better informed and make better decisions whilst driving cost down and quality up. “Why would we not take a similar approach when specifying our assets?” he asks. “After all, there’s a lot more at risk” Terry points-out that various reports have been trying to improve the construction industry since circa 1944 and that whilst all were intelligent and sensible, they have ultimately lacked the necessary traction. The “BIM revolution” as he puts it, now has the ability to create a step change and achieve the Construction 2025 targets (https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/210099/bis-13-955-construction-2025-industrial-strategy.pdf). However, Terry believes this will only happen if clients understand the potential of BIM, if they consistently request it during procurement and do so in a way that enables the market to respond on the basis of their BIM experience. “If we can master that process, working on a construction project in a BIM environment will be like going on holiday”. In this episode I made some chickpea banana pancakes, a cucumber relish sauce, homemade mayo, sweet potato fries, a chickpea bun, and a black and white bean burger. Deliciousness all around Chickpea Bun Ingredients: Chickpeas Water - In a spice mill grind chickpeas into a powder. In a bowl mix chickpea "flour" with water until a batter like consistency forms. Fry on a pan with oil. Chickpea Banana Pancakes Ingredients: Dried Chickpeas Banana (Salt optional) - In a spice mill grind dried chickpeas until powdery "flour" like texture. In a bowl mix ground chickpeas with some water, and add a pinch of salt if desired. Mash in a banana. Heat oil or butter on a pan and add batter cook until golden and flip. Enjoy a glorious this gluten free/vegan pancake with a drizzle of honey and sliced bananas! Cucumber Relish Sauce Ingredients: Cucumber Lemon Juice Salt Sugar in the Raw Vinegar Ginger Scallion - In a food processor or blender add chopped cucumbers, lemon juice, salt, sugar in the raw, vinegar, ginger and scallion. Blend until smooth. Enjoy! Homemade Mayo Ingredients: Egg Neutral Oil (Canola, Safflower, Soybean, Corn, Sunflower etc). - In a bowl whisk an egg. Slowly drizzle oil while continuously whisking egg until it starts to emulsify. Sweet Potato Fries Ingredients: Sweet Potato Salt Oil - Cut up sweet potato into fries, toss with oil and a sprinkle of salt. Add to a parchment lined cookie sheet, and roast in the oven. Black and White Bean Burger Ingredients: Black Beans Onions Chickpeas Rice (Egg Optional) - Chop onions finely. Add to bowl with black beans and mash together. Add chickpeas and rice and continue to mash and mix. Form into patties and pan fry. Now put your burger together with the chickpea buns. Top with slaw, cucumber relish dressing, mayo. Enjoy!
