This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner repair her leaky kitchen faucet. (See below for a shopping list, tools, and steps.) SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Shopping List for How to Repair a Leaky Kitchen Faucet: - Rubber seats and springs - Rubber gasket and cam cap - Ceramic cartridge, to repair a ceramic-cartridge faucet if you have one Tools List for How to Repair a Leaky Kitchen Faucet: - Hex-hey wrench, to loosen the hex-head screw - Pocketknife or narrow-blade screwdriver, to extract faucet parts - Sharpened pencil, to install new seats and springs - Spanner wrench   Steps for How to Repair a Leaky Kitchen Faucet: 1. Close the hot- and cold-water shutoff valves under the kitchen sink. 2. Place a rag over the sink drain to catch any dropped parts. 3. Use a pocketknife to pry off the small index cover from the side of the faucet to reveal the hex-head screw. 4. Loosen the screw with the hex-key wrench and pull off the faucet handle. 5. Use the spanner wrench that came with the faucet to loosen and remove top cap assembly. 6. Pull straight up to remove the stainless-steel ball from the faucet body. 7. Use a pocketknife to extract the rubber seats and springs from inside the faucet. 8. Slip a new spring and rubber seat onto the tip of a pencil and lower it down into the faucet. Repeat to install the remaining seat and spring. 9. Reinstall the stainless-steel ball, making sure to align its keyway with the corresponding tab inside the faucet body. 10. On top of the stainless-steel ball install a new rubber gasket and cam cap. Align the keyway on the cap with the corresponding slot to ensure proper alignment. 11. Hand-tighten the top cap assembly back onto the faucet. 12. Open the two shutoff valves under the sink. 13. Use the spanner wrench to tighten the nut to provide the proper tension against the stainless-steel ball. 14. Reinstall the faucet handle, tighten the hex-head screw and then press on the index cover. 15. If your faucet doesn t have a stainless-steel ball, it s likely a ceramic-cartridge faucet. In this video I test Royal Purple Max Clean Fuel System Cleaner in a Ford Explorer. I use a borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment. This is the first time I looked at intake runners and valves, and I also looked at the piston head. I followed the instructions on the container and Royal Purple did clean some carbon off the intake runners, valves, and piston heads. The cord was then tied in such a way to produce an area in the middle with three cords. A strip of the same bark fiber was woven between these to form a pouch. A loop was tied at one end of the sling and a knot tied in the other. To use it, the loop is slipped over the finger and the knot is held down with the thumb. A stone is placed in the pouch and the sling swung over head. At the appropriate time the sling is swung forward in a throwing action and the knot held in the hand is let go. This causes the pouch to open and the stone to fly (hopefully) towards the target. I hadn t used a sling for eight years but the first target I set up and filmed, a potsherd on a stick at 10 m, was hit first go! Next I set up a log at 20 m and required more practice. Targets of potsherds and tiles at 10 m were set up in a clearing. Tiles on sticks at 15 m were set up in a stretch of creek. The last shots are back in the clearing at 10 m. Learning to use the sling is difficult and practice is necessary. When aiming line up the swinging plane of the sling with the target to determine Y-axis aspect and use release timing to determine x-axis aspect. With timing (right handed) too early and the stone will got to the right, too late and it will go left. Practice to make it go at the right time. Use larger stones as they swing slower and are easier to time. Use smooth stones so they fly straight and don t cling to the pouch when released. The advantage of the sling is that it s easy to make, portable and the ammunition (stones) are every where. The disadvantages are it s difficult to learn to use accurately, noise and movement give it away when used, it can t penetrate a target like an arrow (unless using some kind of weighted dart) and it can t be fired in thick forest. Interestingly, the sling has a range comparable to a bow. From my research, the record for the longest sling shot was 505 m and that of the bow just under 500 m.
