Like the size of the Moon and the Sun in the sky, even though they’re so far apart. Or the shape of the Pac Man Nebula or the Wizard Nebula. Or like the plot of Force Awakens and every other Star Wars movie, the coincidences are everywhere. But here’s a pretty strange coincidence, and it has to do with the nature of the Universe itself. Follow along with me here. Let’s consider black holes, a topic we’ve covered many times on this channel. If you’ve watched enough of our videos, you know a black hole is a region of space where matter and energy have been mashed so densely that the gravitational escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. We don’t know how big black holes are, but it’s possible that they’ve crushed down into an infinitely dense region, known as a singularity. Singularity, singularity… where have we heard that word before? Apart from Ray Kurzweil and his crew of technological singularitarians. That word comes up when we discuss the formation of the Universe; the Big Bang. Back at the beginning, 13.8 billion years ago, everything in the entire Universe was crushed down into a region of infinite density. And then, in a fraction of a second, everything expanded outward. Astronomers call this region of infinite density the Big Bang singularity. This can’t just be a coincidence, right? It’s the same word. It’s the SAME WORD! Was the Big Bang singularity just a really big black hole singularity? A black hole with all the mass of the Universe inside it? I’m going to admit, this question is a little beyond my paygrade. To fully explain the science, I thought I’d bring in a ringer. Dr. Paul Matt Sutter is an astrophysicist with Ohio State University and the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste. Paul specializes in cosmic voids, he also knows plenty about both the Big Bang and black holes. I’ve reached Paul on the set of his Ask a Spaceman podcast, and thrown this zinger right at him. Hey Paul, what’s the difference between the singularity that formed the Big Bang and a black hole singularity? Did the whole Universe start off from a really massive black hole? ----------- In our next episode, we look into the different ways stars can detonate as supernovae - all the different varieties may surprise you. If the height of the flange is too low, you may have to get a higher wax ring to compensate. 6. Alternatives to the wax ring are a foam seal or a plastic seal. 7. Other options for raising the flange: Adding flange spacers or adding a flange insert. Ensure power feed is safely turned off at the circuit breaker panel. 2. Trace the pancake electrical junction box in desired position on the outdoor wall. 3. Use a hammer drill to drill into granite (if applicable) or cut outdoor siding using a hole saw. 4. Chip out remaining structure using a chisel. 5. Fish wire through the hole in the electrical box and secure with a wire clamp. 6. Secure the pancake electrical junction box into the structure using a driver. 7. Attach the sconce bracket to the electrical box using a screwdriver. 8. Splice wire connections together using pliers and cover with wire nuts. 9. Cut holes in the ceiling structure with a hole saw (if applicable). 10. Splice wires together using pliers and cover with wire nuts. 11. Place the recessed lighting housings inside the ceiling holes. Use tabs on the fixture to secure the housing to the top of the ceiling. 12. Insert the recessed trim to cover the recessed housings. Hook the measuring tape on the bottom of the door on the hinge side, then measure and mark the height noted earlier. 5. Measure from your mark to the top of the header, then measure that same distance on the striker side to ensure the header will be level. 6. Hook the measuring tape under the striker-side jamb and measure up. The difference between the measurement from the rough opening to the mark on the doorjamb is the amount that will need to be cut out of the jamb (depending on the door, one or both jambs may need to be cut). 7. Use a circular saw to cut the jamb(s) to the desired lengths. 8. Use a level to ensure the rough opening is plumb on the hinge side. If not, nail an appropriate number of shims into the rough opening to make it plumb. 9. Move the door in place and keep it flush with the outer wall. 10. Pre-drill a hole and drive in a screw at the top on the hinge side. 11. Check the jamb to see if it’s plumb using a level. 12. Finish screwing in the hinge-side jamb using a driver. 13. Line up the two reference lines on the striker-side jamb. 14. Use shims down the hinge-side jamb to level it off, and drive in screws with a driver. 15. Break off the shims. 16. Put on trim using a nail gun or hammer. 17. Install door-knob hardware.
