Watching A Cold Engine Start With A Thermal Camera Flir One Thermal Camera - http://amzn.to/2j2gnNh Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Related Videos/Links Should You Warm Up Your Engine? - https://youtu.be/xKALgXDwou4 Garmin 4K Camera Used - http://amzn.to/2fZSSQ0 Data Overlay OBD2 Link - http://amzn.to/2fZMYi3 In this video we’re going to be cold starting the engine of my 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, and using a thermal camera we’re going to watch the engine heat up. The ambient temperature is about negative 6 degrees Celsius or about 22 degrees Fahrenheit. As far as metrics we’ll be monitoring, we’ve got overlays of the engine RPM, which will run higher when the engine first starts to help warm things up. We also have throttle position, the coolant and intake air temperatures, the temperature of where the thermal camera is centered, and a timestamp so we know how long the engine has been running. If it’s freezing outside and you don’t want to get in a frozen car, no one’s going to fault you for warming up the engine and making sure it’s comfortable inside, as well as making sure the windows are defrosted so you’re ready to roll. In my video I was purely discussing what’s happening from a mechanical standpoint when you let your engine sit and idle. Oil can actually flow at very low temperatures. You may be freezing, but for certain viscosity grades cold temperatures aren’t a huge deal. For example, my Honda S2000 recommends a 10W-30 oil, and it only recommends going down to a thinner 5W grade oil if ambient temperatures drop below minus 20 degrees C. Minus 20 degrees C! And this is logical based on SAE cold temperature viscosity ratings. For example, a 0W oil needs to be able to pump at -40 degrees C. A 5W oil needs to be able to pump at -35 degrees C. A 10W oil needs to be able to flow at -30 degrees C, and so on. Oil can do a decent job of protecting your engine even at low temperatures, as long as you’re not asking the engine for too much power. Try to keep the revs low, and be light on the throttle until the engine is warmed up. Getting up to higher vehicle speeds is fine, as long as your acceleration is gentle and steady, and you’re mindful of your engine RPM. Source: http://www.viscopedia.com/viscosity-tables/substances/sae-viscosity-grades/ Now inevitably someone in the comments is going to say they live in an area with negative 40 degrees C temps and they always warm there car up for several minutes before taking off. A couple of things to note here: first, that’s obviously super cold, and I can’t blame you for wanting the interior to be warm. Second, make sure you’re using a viscosity grade that can flow in these conditions. 0W is designed for this. Third, with temperatures this low, it’s a good idea to get an electric engine block heater so your engine won’t have to strain so hard to get oil flowing throughout. At about 5 minutes and 20 seconds, when the coolant temperature reaches 50 degrees C, you’ll notice the engine RPM starts to significantly drop, eventually getting down to 800 RPM when the coolant reaches 60 degrees C. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, hot sauce and ranch dressing until it becomes smooth. Stir in the chicken and blue cheese. Pour mixture into an oven-safe dish. Bake for about 20 minutes or until dip is hot and bubbling. Serve with carrots, celery and chips for dipping. Cheesy Lasagna Dip 1⁄2lb ground beef, removed from its casing 1 clove garlic, minced 2 cups tomato sauce 1 tbsp Italian seasoning 1 cup ricotta cheese 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped Preheat oven to 400°F. Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with the side of a spoon, until it’s no longer pink. Add garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Add tomato sauce and Italian seasoning and bring the mixture to a simmer. Turn off the heat. Spread the ricotta cheese over the top of the skillet. Top with shredded mozzarella and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and golden. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with garlic bread. Spicy Chorizo Queso Dip 1⁄2lb chorizo, removed from its casing 1⁄2 red onion, finely diced 1⁄2 red bell pepper, finely diced 1 clove garlic, minced 1 jalapeno, minced (optional) 1 tbsp flour 1 cup milk 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded pickled jalapenos, for garnish cilantro, for garnish Heat a large skillet over medium-high. Add chorizo and cook, crumbling with the side of a spoon, until it is no longer pink. Remove cooked chorizo from the skillet and set it aside. To the same skillet, add red onion and red bell pepper. Cook until they begin to soften; about 4 minutes. Add garlic and jalapeno and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Add flour and cook, stirring constantly, for another minute. Reduce heat to medium-low, add milk and whisk mixture until it begins to thicken. Stir in cheese, half a cup at a time, until it is completely melted. Return chorizo to the skillet. On the next day, I wasn’t really planning to make a video, but Ying’s Aunt decided to make chili frog — Thai food village style with lots of oil and lots of chilies and garlic — so I decided to make a quick video to show you how she made it and the food all the Thai food we ate for lunch. Here are the main ingredients for this Thai recipe for this spicy frog: Frog (กบ kob) Curry paste (เครื่องแกงเผ็ด kreung gaeng ped) Fish sauce - น้ำปลา (nam pla) Holy basil (กระเพรา kraprao) Chilies - (พริก prik) Garlic - (กระเทียม gratiem) Green peppercorns (พริกไทยอ่อน prik thai awn) After preparing the frog, she added in a lot of oil, then first fried up the chili paste and garlic and chilies, which I think were pounded with pepper. Then in went the frog, which we fried for about 10 minutes. Then finally we added in fish sauce to taste, the green peppercorns and finally the holy basil at the very end. Along with making the chili frog (pad ped kob ผัดเผ็ดกบ), for lunch we also had a variety of other dishes, including pla salid (ปลาสลิด), which is a snakeskin gourami fish that’s salted and dried, then deep fried. This is because most good back exercises require things such as dumbbells or pullup bars. Not this one. This bodyweight back exercise makes a great addition to any home back workout and can be made easier or more difficult depending on your ability level. To begin, it is helpful to look at the mechanics of the dumbbell equivalent of this exercise, the dumbbell pullover. Here you can see that the arms will move on a fixed torso. With the dumbbell positioned over your chest, you move it back over your head and keep your trunk and torso in place on the bench or on the ground as I demonstrate in the clip. The shoulder joint is moving from flexion into extension and adduction. Of course, the shoulder never gets into true extension behind the torso, but it is the act of extension from a flexed position combined with the adduction that activates the lats. Understanding relative motion, we can flip this around and instead of doing this exercise with our arms as the moving part and the body fixed to the floor, we can keep the arms fixed and move the body instead. To set up for this you want to get your body in position to do a dragon flag. Now whether or not you can do a dragon flag is irrelevant to your ability to do this human pullover exercise for your lats. In fact, if you don’t have the core strength necessary you can simply bend your knees and lift your butt off the ground instead of having to lift both your butt and the weight of your legs. The key either way is that the lats will initiate the lift off and not the abs or hips. Start by anchoring your arms against something heavy enough so as not to move. If you are performing this at home you can hold onto either a banister, piece of furniture or something equally sturdy. If you are doing this bodyweight lat exercise in a gym you can use a piece of equipment like I’m using. Start by pushing your hands as hard as you possibly can into the fixed anchor point. This should elevate your torso off the ground and bring your hips closer to your shoulders. Essentially, you are extending and adducting your arms without having to move them. By moving the hips towards the arms you are still creating the relative motion and therefore engaging the lats heavily. Extend your legs straight out if you are looking for an additional core challenge. By doing this, you are making the weight of the legs “heavier” and demanding that your abs do more of the work to hold them up at the top of the move. Remember however, this is a lat exercise and not meant to be a primary core exercise so don’t confuse the goal.
