At the old hut site (the new one being temporarily cut off by flooding) I made lime mortar from the shells of rainforest snails by firing them in a kiln, slaking them in water, mixing them into lime putty. Limestone is basically calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The general source of lime is limestone and various other calcareous minerals, though shells, egg shells and coral are other sources of lime (for more information see video on Corporals Corner channel: https://youtu.be/tOhAfaFboNU or Skillcults channel: https://youtu.be/jOxaOTUGuKo). When heated above 840 degrees Celsius, the lime decomposes into calcium oxide (CaO) or Quicklime and releases carbon dioxide (CO2). When water is added to the quicklime it becomes calcium hydroxide Ca (OH)2 or lime putty. From here the calcium hydroxide can then be shaped into a form and allowed to set. Carbon dioxide enters the lime putty as it dries causing it to turn back into calcium carbonate. The new calcium carbonate has then set, remaining solid and water resistant. In my local geography, calcareous rocks such as limestone are absent leading to a difficulty in acquiring the feed stock for lime making. However, I was still able to make lime by collecting the shells of large terrestrial snails that are native to the rainforest here. The unoccupied shells of these snails were gathered up and stored at the hut. Fire wood was gathered and packed neatly into the kiln. Importantly, the firewood was stacked on top of the grate rather than underneath it in the firebox as is the normal procedure for firing pottery. Using an ordinary updraft pottery kiln in this configuration allows it to reach much higher temperatures than would be possible during normal use. The wood was lit from above and the fire burned down towards the grate. Alternate layers of shells and wood were added on to this burning fuel bed. After adding the last layer of wood to act as a “lid” to prevent heat loss from above I left the kiln to finish on its own, unsupervised. The whole process took about an hour and a half. When the kiln had cooled down a few hours later, I took out the calcined shells. Not shown in the video was the fact that some shells got so hot, the dirt stuck to them turned into slag and fused to them, possibly with the lime acting a flux lowering its melting point. This extreme heat (+1200 c) should be avoided as the over burnt lime becomes “dead lime”, unable to slake in water. Most shells were still useable though. They were taken out of the kiln and had water added to them. An exothermic reaction then ensued. Heat was produced as the lime quicklime turned into slaked lime. The water heated up creating steam and the shells decomposed into a white paste. The paste was stirred and crushed pottery was added to it as an aggregate (sand is normally used for this, I just had a lot of old pot sherds lying about to dispose of). This lime mortar mixture was then formed into a block shape and left to dry. It took about a week and a half to set as we have had extremely humid, wet weather. The block was observed to have set demonstrating its properties. What I created is actually lime mortar, typically used for mortaring bricks and tiles together. It’s basically the ‘Glue’ that holds together the building blocks of masonry structures. From my research 20 kg of lime mortar is used on a 1 m square section of brick wall. 5 kg of lime to 15 kg of aggregate (sand, grog etc.) per a 1 m square section of bricks. The shells, though large, are not terribly abundant. A method for finding shells efficiently needs to be made before considering making lime mortar in this fashion. From my experience sand bars in a creek sometimes accumulate snail shells from higher up in the mountains. In these spots, water velocity decreases and shells in the water tend to drop out of the water column. Additionally lime may be partially replaced with ordinary wood ash in mortar without a corresponding decrease in strength. To conclude, making lime in a land without limestone is possible but can be problematic when trying to do so on a large scale. In this video Top Tennis Training coach Simon Konov will analyse Roger Federer s tennis serve technique in great detail. Federer has one of, if not the best tennis serve in history and there are a few fundamental things that all of us can implement from his serve. These include: 1. Using the continental grip for your tennis serve 2. Having a good, consistent ball toss that is placed in the same spot time and time again, no more than 6 inches above the point of contact 3. Reaching a good trophy position but not pausing in that shape for too long 4. A good explosive leg drive to make contact at the highest spot possible 5. A relaxed follow through and finish

This the coolest airbnb I ve ever stayed in. There are some amazing things to do in Mexico City, and if you want to travel just a short distance outside of it, you ll find the Nido de Quetzalcoatl or Quetzalcoatl s Nest tucked inside the valleys of Naucalpan. It is a series of 10 apartments build into the back of a giant serpent. It s the coolest house I ve ever seen, if you don t mind living in a snake god. This park was created by Javier Senosiain, a Mexican architect specializing in Organic Architecture. This philosophy of construction blends seamlessly with nature, so they both work together in harmony. When Javier first decided to build the park, he came across a giant cave whose opening resembled the gaping mouth of a snake. This inspired him to continue the theme, and great a giant 18 hectare park, with 13 snakes twisting through it. Despite everything he has created here, the valley in which everything is hidden, is vastly untouched. His constructions are guided using the natural shape of the land. As far as things to do in Mexico, this is an absolute must. I have never seen anything like this in all of my years as a travel vlogger. It is truly an oasis hidden away from the bustle of Mexico City ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TO VISIT: At this time you have two options. A private tour or staying in the apartment. Our contact for both of these is Patricia. Her email: mopacastillo(at)gmail.com The easiest, and which that allows you the most freedom is to stay there overnight. It is a 8-10 person apartment, with a recommended minimum of 2 nights. This can sometimes be negotiated depending on the time of year. Get some friends together and split the cost. It is worth it. Many parts of rural Kenya lack access to electricity, leaving residents shrouded in darkness as nighttime falls. John Magiro Wangare wanted to change that. Using a local river, scrap metal and dynamo, Wangare built a hydroelectric power station in the town of Njumbi. Today, his clean energy solution generates electricity for 250 households, creating a brighter life for his whole community. We wanted to experience Cabin Life in the Snow. So we head to the Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin in Winter, which had a recent snow storm with blizzard and ice rain that came in from Siberia. We get the woodstove going, make some tea and light the candles for some hygge! We open up some subscriber mail sent from you guys, thank you so much to those who sent us stuff. This Off Grid Tiny Home was built using recycled Pallet Wood. It has been a great wilderness project which I have been doing with my Dad. It s only small, and can sleep one person. It has a woodstove, raised bed, folding table, book case, sink and wash area, front porch and small log store. It may not look like a Log Cabin, but for us it was the building part that meant the most. We used a mixture of hand tools and power tools, but our main aim was to try and save money and build the cabin for free. Thanks for joining us on this winter snow day! The Woodstove we use is the Gstove Heat View. They are offering my subscribers 15% off their stoves and accessories on their website: https://www.gstove.com/ The code is "taoutdoors" It s an affiliate code so it helps out our Channel :) OFFICIAL TA OUTDOORS MERCH: https://taofficial.com TA OUTDOORS PATCHES: https://www.taoutdoors.com TA INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/taoutdoorofficial TA FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/totallyawesomeoutdoors TA TWITTER: https://twitter.com/OutdoorsTa BEGINNER BUSHCRAFT GEAR: https://www.taoutdoors.com/bushcraft-gear/ INTERMEDIATE BUSHCRAFT GEAR: https://www.taoutdoors.com/intermediate-gear/ ADVANCED BUSHCRAFT GEAR: https://www.taoutdoors.com/advanced-gear/ Channel shout outs: - East Coast Fishing Game and Camp: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS4Sb1xOFKfNwE0YoVvyGoA - Wesley Jeggo: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqJkBXJoJKw9MzO2npMX-kQ - Alec Steele: https://www.youtube.com/alecsteele Subscribe to our other Fishing YouTube Channel "TAFishing" here: https://www.youtube.com/tafishing FILMING & CAMERA GEAR I USE: Main Camera: https://amzn.to/2SG9unv Drone: https://amzn.to/2WSQ1za Standard Lens: https://amzn.to/2E5LFxs Wide Angle Lens: https://amzn.to/2E3U6t0 Zoom Lens: https://amzn.to/2tfb4yl 50mm fixed Lens: https://amzn.to/2BvUAGN Main Camera Microphone: https://amzn.to/2I9tVVQ Secondary Camera Mic: https://amzn.to/2WYP3RQ Radio Microphone: https://amzn.to/2Ifqaym Camera Light: https://amzn.to/2MYA4mn Powerbank: https://amzn.to/2WYQVdk Tripod: https://amzn.to/2DtumVm GoPro Action Cam: https://amzn.to/2UPS9Wx GoPro Chest Mount: https://amzn.to/2tfCkwu GoPro Head Mount: https://amzn.to/2WWBra3 Camera SD Cards: https://amzn.to/2WVWcT5 Editing Laptop: https://amzn.to/2BtRK4S BUSHCRAFT GEAR I USE: Bushcraft Pants/Trousers: https://amzn.to/2SFY8jf 3x3 Metre Tarp: https://amzn.to/2IjM4Az Hammock: https://amzn.to/2N0Vpvx Hammock underblanket: https://amzn.to/2GmeBmT Thermal Camping Air Mattress: https://amzn.to/2N0uQXs Awesome Affordable Bushcraft Knives: https://amzn.to/2SLhWle Medium Axe: https://amzn.to/2E5NBWK Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe: https://amzn.to/2E5FkC1 Small Hatchet: https://amzn.to/2I319Gb Affordable Firesteel: https://amzn.to/2N1D3L8 Folding Camp Grill: https://amzn.to/2BvF6lM Durable GPS Watch: https://amzn.to/2N1fQZl These are Amazon associate links and help to support my channel.
