That said, there are some limitations to the exercise when it comes to developing all of the muscles of your back. In this video, I’m going to show you four lat pulldown alternatives for a better back that you can use in addition to the classic exercise the very next time you train. To start, there are many different ways to do even the traditional pulldown exercise. You can perform it with your hands gripped underhand for instance. This helps to activate the biceps a bit more allowing you to lift more weight while also getting an anatomically good stretch on the lats in the top position of the rep. You can grip overhand and do so either narrow or out wide. The wider you go the more likely you are to activate the teres major muscle (an important yet overlooked muscle of the back). That said, there are many other things that you can do with the lat pulldown machine that aren’t exactly pulldown grip or width changes. For instance, you can begin by swapping out the attachment that you are using to perform the exercise. Don’t always use the default bar to perform your lat pulldown reps. Instead, try attaching a rope and doing what may be my favorite all time back exercise, the face pulldown. The face pulldown is a variation of the face pull (which is something that I recommend you do at the conclusion of every back workout you do). Instead of pulling purely horizontal as is often the case with the standard version of this, you’ll be getting a vertical pull and will be able to use slightly heavier weights here for more hypertrophy. Next, you can keep the rope in place and perform a straight arm pulldown. The rope, by virtue of the fact that it hangs lower than the bar, gives your arms more room to travel up and down and therefore get a better contraction of the lats at the bottom. If you used the bar you likely would have to stop because you run out of room on the pulley at about upper chest height. This will limit the degree of contraction that you are able to get in your lats. Instead, with the rope you can squeeze your lats hard and get the hands down to about waist level for a stronger contraction on every rep. Now you can always use the traditional bar attachment as well, just perform your exercises differently for a different effect. Here you would want to try the straight arm scapular strength pulldown. This may be the most grueling but effective of them all. This is a variation of an exercise I did on instagram that caught the attention of Sylvester Stallone. This works a key element of scapular strength that often gets overlooked. Not anymore. Finally, the scapula pulldown is another one of those small muscle exercises that delivers big results. Try to pull the bar and shoulder blades down without bending your elbows. This forces the muscles of the mid and lower traps to do it correctly. These muscles of the back often do not get the work that they should. Doing this exercise this way will deliver big results in a short period of time. We learn how to hit a bump and run shot - probably the most valuable shot for a high handicapper who is not confident with pitch shots or likes to use the inconsistent 54 or 56 or 60° wedge around the greens. We also focus on downhill putts and with the added grain in the greens, how the down grain aspect affects the ball. Interesting techniques that you cna start using tomorrow to putt better and learn how to putt downhill. We see him putting his chipping technique to the test as well as thinking about what club to hit into the green when there is trouble around it. It was great to finally have the ability to guide him after he forgot about the range sessions he had after watching Youtube videos to fix his swing! All he needs to do is trust himself and play the shots that he knows. He will break 100 like that and so will you. But after the bladed chips, I took matters into my hands and taught AJ how to chip a golf ball. My technique is effortless and just takes a bit of grooving. AJ was using the hand flipping and weight on the back foot technique. I must stress, if you’re trying to break 100 in golf, while you may have an eye for other people’s swings, I can almost guarantee that diagnosing your own swing problems and then looking for a fix on Youtube will end in catastrophe. We need to be realistic. It would be better to trust the swing you have and if you really don’t, go see a reputable professional. And then realize that swing changes take months and years to implement. Small tips like ball position, swinging 75% instead of 100% etc can be very helpful as instant fixes if delivered by someone who can watch your swing. But taking the confusion from the range to the course is going to spoil your round. Relax and enjoy the game without thinking of your swing. When on the range, practice your most common clubs and practice a full round including tee shots, approaches and pitches. Come join us for a family USA road trip as we showcase our journey driving from North Dakota to Michigan in this travel vlog. We start things off in Alberta, Canada crossing into the province of Saskatchewan and then heading south towards North Dakota. Our border crossing from Canada to USA was an absolute breeze as we were the only person in line at the border and the border control officer was very friendly. After a long day of driving we checked into a cheap motel Super 8 in Williston, North Dakota. The following day we drove the width of North Dakota and entered into the state of Minnesota. The scenery changed from mostly farmland to more trees and lakes. Our final stop on day number two was in Alexandria, Minnesota where we stayed in another cheap motel. After having a couple of very mediocre stays in motels we decided we d go for an airbnb for our third night of the road trip. On day three we drove across Minnesota and crossed into Wisconsin where we stayed the night in a house in Racine. The following day, our final day of the road trip saw us crossing more states than any other day on this trip. We stared off in Wisconsin and touched down briefly in Illinois and Indiana before spending the rest of our journey in Michigan. We came back into Canada through Sarnia at the border between Michigan and Ontario. This border crossing was much more active than the first one but it still didn t take us long to get through. With just a few hours left we finished off by driving back home to Brampton. Overall, it was a fantastic 14 day road trip and we covered over 9000 kilometres (5600 miles) with all of the sightseeing including for the return trip to Alberta and back home. We drove all of the way out west from Ontario to British Columbia. Mmhmm. Now we re heading back home but instead of going back through Canada we ve decided to go through the USA. Yes. Yeah. We thought we might enjoy a little change of scenery. Mmmhmm. You know, see something different. Yep. And also like driving through the Prairies on the way to BC it felt a bit long. Yep. So thought let s see something new, something different. It is still going to take us four days but the journey is a little shorter just by a few hours. Yeah. So yeah we re going to bring you along on this little road trip. Right now we re having a little snack. Some Timmies. Our last Tim Hortons before leaving Canada. Yeah, we ll be crossing the border in Saskatchewan very soon. So exciting times. We spent most of the day driving in Canada. We did. Who knew the border was so far away. And we crossed in through Saskatchewan. The Province of Saskatchewan into North Dakota. Yeah. And we were the only people at the border. The only people there. The border security guard was really friendly. He did his job he asked us a lot of questions but in a friendly way. Yes. And he liked the dog even though Togo barked at him. It is even what surprised me was when we arrived in North Dakota it was even quieter than Saskatchewan which is a pretty quiet province in Canada. It is very peaceful. Let s hope we get a good nights rest. Now that we re in Michigan it is a lot more reasonable and we re heading up north. We had the option of going through Detroit but we re going to go through and cross through Sarnia into Ontario. Yeah. We re thinking there will be less traffic. And the dog is thrilled to be out going for a walk at the moment. Stretching our legs. Look at how green it is. It is nice here. We re back in Canada!
