China is the world leader in facial recognition technology. Discover how the country is using it to develop a vast hyper-surveillance system able to monitor and target its ethnic minorities, including the Muslim Uyghur population. This is the next groundbreaking development in data-driven technology, facial recognition. And in China you can already withdraw cash, check in at airports, and pay for goods using just your face. The country is the world s leader in the use of this emerging technology, and China s many artificial intelligence startups are determined to keep it that way in the future. Companies like Yitu. Yitu is creating the building blocks for a smart city of the future, where facial recognition is part of everyday life. This could even extend to detecting what people are thinking. But the Chinese government has plans to use this new biometric technology to cement its authoritarian rule. The country has ambitious plans to develop a vast national surveillance system based on facial recognition. It ll be used to monitor it s 1.4 billion citizens in unprecedented ways. With the capability of tracking everything from their emotions to their sexuality. The primary means will be a vast network of CCTV cameras. 170 million are already in place and an estimated 400 million new ones will be installed over the next three years. The authorities insist this program will allow them to improve security for citizens, and if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. But not everyone is convinced. Hong Zhenkuai is a former magazine editor who was ousted by the government. He feels like he s under constant surveillance. Already the authorities are using facial recognition to name and shame citizens, even for minor offenses like jaywalking. In Beijing they re using the technology to prevent people stealing rolls of loo paper from public toilets, and across China police officers are now trialing sunglasses and body cameras loaded with facial and gesture recognition technology - it s helping them to identify wanted suspects in real-time. What worries some people here is that as the technology develops, so too does the capacity for it to be abused. Some of those most at risk in this hyper surveillance future are the ethnic minorities in China. In Xinjiang province, the Chinese government is wary of the separatist threat posed by the Muslim Uyghur population. According to local NGOs, an estimated 1 million Uyghurs are being detained indefinitely in secretive internment camps, where some are being subject to abuse. It s been called the largest mass incarceration of a minority population in the world today. The authorities are using facial recognition cameras to scan people s faces before they enter markets. The system alerts authorities if targeted individuals stray 300 meters beyond their home. In the future the government plans to aggregate even more data and build a predictive policing program that imposes even tighter controls here. Without checks and balances, China will keep finding new ways to violate the human rights of its citizens. What s already happening in Xinjiang is a warning the rest of the world must heed. Join us for a Japanese Apartment Tour in Osaka, Japan as we showcase our airbnb rental that we stayed in for just over a week. Before coming to Japan we had this preconceived idea that all of our accommodations in Japan would be tiny and expensive. I suppose we thought of our experience in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore and assumed we d be cramped for most of our trip. Surprisingly we found not only larger apartments that we expected but prices that were very reasonable and conveniently located nearby metro stations. Our Osaka apartment was in a great location (stone throw away from a metro), was quite spacious and was inexpensive. The fascinating thing about Japanese apartments is that space efficiency is maximized in a way you don t see outside of Asia in Europe or in North America. For example, sliding doors that don t take up space, chairs that can stored under tables and a bed big enough that a suitcase can fit underneath. Overall, we d say our apartment in Osaka, Japan was excellent value, comfortable and located just perfect for our trip. Not ideal for sightseeing so we figured let s give you an apartment tour of our place here in the city. We ve been staying here for about a week and we got this place for $30 US dollars a night. That is a steal for Japan. Like that is so budget friendly in my opinion. We re going to go upstairs and we re going to give you the grand tour. We made it to our floor. First things first we ve got a little hook for our umbrella. Everyone keeps their umbrellas outside. No one takes them. That is wonderful. " We are inside the apartment and if you ve been traveling in Asia you know that no shoes are allowed inside the house. This is the area where you take off your dirty shoes and then you have this little cupboard. You ve got your cupboard for all of the shoes. Little shoe rack. You put your shoes in. This is our bathroom and it has three different sections. It is the largest Japanese bathroom I ve ever seen. When we were looking at properties I was actually kind of surprised by the size of it. We are now inside the bathroom and this first section here it basically has a washing machine. A large sink, a mirror. This is where you brush your teeth. Get ready in the morning. Then over here behind this frosted glass door we have our shower and our bathtub. Now I just had a shower so the floor is soaking wet. I m going to put on my flip flops. Flips flops. Outside. Basically you have a bathtub. It is a short bathtub. You have to be shorter than me I feel to like stretch out your legs. Definitely shorter than me. And then we also have a shower head. You shower in this section. The floor gets wet. And then basically the water goes through this drain down here. It drains there. Something I ve got to mention is the water pressure is awesome here. And then we have our toilet. It is compartmentalized. It is small. It is little but it has got everything you need. And I need to show you this. When you flush the toilet. So this is the toilet handle. You can wash your hands and like the water you are using to wash your hands is used to fill the tank. So you are not wasting any water. That is genius. That is a wrap for our Osaka apartment tour. I hope you guys enjoyed that and that you have an idea of what to expect in the city. I think there are some really budget friendly properties when we were looking there were a lot of places that were listed for like 30 or 40 dollars a night for like private apartments. So what I learned really surprised me: There are hundreds of scientists working on this shampoo. They run crazy-sounding experiments like hanging hair near Tokyo highways to understand how real-world environments deposit dirt on hair. They use sophisticated scientific techniques like electron microscopes, nuclear magnetic resonance and gene sequencing to study dandruff on the molecular level. In fact they sequenced the entire genome of Malassezia globosa in 2002, one year after the human genome project. Their findings are published in international refereed journals. What they have found is that the Malassezia fungi create free fatty acids as byproducts of their digestion, which for some people create irritation and lead to hyper-proliferation of skin cells, flaking, histamines, inflammatory cytokines, and blood proteins reaching the surface of the skin. These findings indicate the unhealthiness of dandruff scalp and suggest a possible remedy - controlling the metabolism of the Malassezia fungi. This is achieved using different active ingredients in different products and different parts of the world, including zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, and piroctone olamine. With the reduction of irritants, the scalp actually expresses different genes, producing a signature more similar to a non-dandruff baseline scalp. Samarkand is a monumental city of history and food that played a major role along the Silk Road, in between China and the Mediterranean. It’s a city of fascinating history, giant plates of plov, and incredible kebabs. Gur-e Amir Сomplex - To begin this full tour of Samarkand, we started in the morning at Gur-e Amir Сomplex, the tomb and mausoleum of Amir Timur, the founding father of Samarkand, responsible for building much of the ancient remains of the city. The tomb complex from the outside is impressive, but the inside will blow you away. Registan - There’s no square more monumental and grand in scale than Registan, the center of the ancient city. You’ll find madrasas and mosques, all of which are intricately decorated and magnificent. Siab Bazaar - A short walk from Registan is Siab Bazaar, right outside Bibi-Khanym Mosque. At the market we stopped to have tea with one of Bekruz’s friends and tasted some nuts and dried fruit. The apricot seeds were new for me, and the dried apricots were spectacular. Osh Markazi - There’s no better place to eat plov, the national dish of Uzbekistan, when you’re in Samarkand than Osh Markazi. Samarkand plov is notable for the rice being cooked in flax-seed oil with yellow carrots and beef. It was one of the best meals and dishes I had in my entire trip to Uzbekistan. Total price - 140,000 UZS ($17.17) Ulugh Beg Observatory - At its time of being built by Ulugh Beg, it was one of the most advanced and important astronomy observatories in the world. Domashnii Restaurant - We didn’t stay long at the observatory because right behind it you’ll find Domashnii Restaurant, a local restaurant that specializes in chickpeas and lamb. The dish is so comforting and both the lamb and chickpeas melt in your mouth. Price - 74,00 UZS ($9.08) Ikrom Shashlik - Next we went to eat Samarkand kebabs, again some of the best kebabs I had on my entire trip to Uzbekistan. The bull testicles and minced meat kebabs were great, but the highlight was the skewer of alternating thin lamb meat and fat. As I was leaving they told me their grill was 21 meters long and the grillmaster had been grilling there for over 20 years. Price - 7,000 UZS ($0.86) per kebab Shah-i-Zinda - At about 5 pm we arrived to Shah-i-Zinda, another masterful tomb complex that includes one of the top sights of Samarkand: the turquoise alley of tombs. The turquoise and blue mosaic will make your jaw-drop. Home-cooked dinner - Finally to end this incredible food and sights tour of Samarkand we went to a family home restaurant where we enjoyed a simple local meal in a family home courtyard. It was the perfect ending to an incredible day in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
