SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 4-5 hours Cost: $1000 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Rustic Dining Table: Circular saw Table saw Surface planer Framing square Tenon joiner Rubber mallet Clamps Paintbrush Palm sander Drill Shopping List: Maple slabs Table legs kit Floating tenons Wood glue Stain/paint Sandpaper Rags Wax finish Wood glue Steps: 1. Use the circular saw to cut all the wood slabs to a rough, workable length. 2. Rip off any live edges or other irregularities with the circular saw. 3. Pass the boards through the table saw to straighten the edges. To do this, pass the board through the table saw multiple times and flip the board each time it’s passed through. Do this multiple times until the board is straight along the fence of the saw. 4. Plane all the boards using the surface planer until they are a uniform thickness. 5. Arrange the boards on a workbench and experiment with each board to see how they best fit and look together. 6. Using the framing square, mark on each board where the floating tenons will join each board together. 7. Use the tenon joiner to cut out holes on each side of the boards on the mark. Some machines have options to make the hole the exact size of the tenon and also slightly larger than the tenon. To ensure and easy but tight fit, cut holes the exact size of the tenon on the left sides of all the boards and cut holes slightly larger than the tenons on the right sides of the boards. 8. Add wood glue into the holes in all the left sides of the boards. Then, hammer in all the floating tenons into those holes with the rubber mallet. 9. Add wood glue to all left sides of the boards and the other side of the hammered in tenons. Spread it out and ensure wood glue covers the entire surface being secured together. 10. Connect the boards together using the floating tenons and the rubber mallet. As each board gets flipped, exposing the right side of the boards, add more wood glue to that side before securing the left side of the next board. 11. Clamp the tabletop together until the glue dries, or about two hours. Once it’s dried, square up the ends with the circular saw and give everything a good sanding. 12. Assemble the legs from the preordered kit. 13. Finish the legs with stain, a finish coat, or paint, based on preference. 14. Apply a finish to the tabletop. In the video, Jimmy applies a wax finish with some rags. 15. Secure the tabletop to the legs and apron using a drill and wood screws. Cali, my golden retriever, and I travel by snowmobile and by snowshoe to a new location to scout for game and a site for my outpost cabin in the Canadian wilderness. That said, is one better than the other for building a better chest? In this video, I’m going to pit them all head to head in an iron face off challenge. I will go over the pros and cons of each version of the bench press exercise to land on one ultimate winner when it comes to your training. That said, we start off with the dumbbell bench press. I’m using the flat bench version of this exercise throughout the video rather than an incline or decline so that we keep one variable of bench angle out of the decision. With the dumbbell bench press we have the opportunity to weight the exercise quite a bit, making it a good option for progressive overload. The issue however is the amount of shoulder stability that is required because of the independent motion of the dumbbells vs the fixed bar you use in a barbell bench press. That said, the mechanics of the press are even a little different. With the barbell bench press, the weights are wider apart and balanced equally around your hands in almost a see-saw mechanics. The dumbbells have all of their weight distributed in a much smaller amount of space (your hand) making it more difficult to support their motion. Back to the dumbbell press however, you gain some additional range of motion here that you are not afforded with the barbell bench press. This is because the hands are not fixed on a bar and therefore can travel towards each other into adduction towards the top of the movement. This extra range of motion does require more control and time under tension however making this somewhat more difficult than the straight up and down bar path of the bench press. Do not make the mistake of thinking that the adduction that does occur here in this bench press variation is resisted however. Side to side motion of the dumbbells at the top is not altered by the downward force of gravity. You may feel more going on in your chest because you are able to actively contract your chest and feel the squeeze as it does so. This just isn’t occurring under any additional resistance and it is something worth noting since it is something people point to as an advantage of dumbbell bench that really is not an advantage. The standing machine press does provide you with a greater opportunity to resist adduction of the arms, but at a cost. It requires a tremendous amount of core stability to counteract the push of the weights away from your body, and even more so, the slow return of the weights back to the stack. If you have a weak core you will not be able to match your true pressing strength ever with this variation of a bench and will therefore be selling your capabilities short. Even the laying down version of the machine cable bench is limited by the ability to “curl” the weight into position to even start performing your reps. The overall winner becomes the barbell bench press. Though slightly limited in its range of motion, it does allow for the greatest amount of progressive overload and strength building. You can press up to 20 percent more weight in this version than you can the dumbbell version as a matter of fact. If you were seeking pure strength, the barbell is the clear choice for these reasons. If you wanted an additional hypertrophy boost you would simply bookend this exercise with another that you could do standing that would overload adduction more significantly. My choice here would be the 3D crossover. But history actually paints a different picture of Vikings than what modern media has romanticized -- for starters, no Viking ever wore a horned helmet. And instead of a big, muscle-bound warrior hardened by the frozen north, most Vikings were actually malnourished. What other misconceptions about Vikings exist? Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show. Today we re asking, “What was life like for a Viking warrior?” Life in the Viking age was tough -- really, really tough. For starters, Vikings inhabited Scandinavia and spread across northern Russia and Europe, land that was difficult to farm and produced little food. This meant that despite popular fiction, most of a Viking warrior s life was actually spent on the farm instead of chopping people s heads off. This is because if crops weren t planted and harvested, everybody would starve. It turns out that across much of the ancient world raiding and pillaging was more of a luxury. Very few villages could afford for their menfolk to leave for weeks or months on end instead of minding the farms. With most Viking villages numbering at their largest from between 15 to 50 households, Viking communities were tightly knit but maintained pretty low populations.
