We re all affected differently. Some people fall in love because their dad or uncle had one. Others fall in love out of necessity, constant breakdowns requiring them to work on their car. For Mr. Frank Mandarano a tour through the Maserati factory in the 60s was enough for him to be smitten. He bought his first Maserati a few years later, a red 3500GT, which promptly broke the day after he bought it. A bearing let go and he had a tough time finding parts. So he started a Maserati club and began buying parts inventories around the US so that he and his fellow club members would have access when needed. Although he s sold the business, he never considered it work as it was born of his passion for the brand. Frank has a few other 3500s, this one though, he s nicknamed "La Latina" because it was one of five GTs sold new in Mexico City. And he loves driving it on lazy, desert roads calling the noise, "primal." He doesn t shift it too much opting instead to leave it in third gear and power out of turns enjoying the mighty aluminum straight-six and stainless steel exhaust. In this episode of Approach Shots, PGA Tour golfer Justin Rose has some tips for how to rip your 3-wood swing. Transcript: "One thing that you may see me do out on tour in my pre-shot routine is a bit of a rehearsal that when I get to the top of my back swing I like to feel that I stay closed halfway down. So basically I m feeling like my left arm is dropping down my chest as I stay closed to the target. That does a couple of things for me. It helps my rhythm, it keeps me very patient off the top of the back swing and also helps me keep a little bit of lag a little bit of an angle as I come down into the ball. One of my faults is when I get a little bit quick and I unwind too early and when that happens I have to hit the brakes essentially and wait for the club to fall into the hitting zone and hence I have to time impact so much more and I end up actually losing the face through impact. But when I make this move and I really wait for it now I put myself in a position where I have to turn very aggressively through impact. So I can pivot much faster, much harder, much more powerfully and that actually stabilizes the face through the hitting area. Should look something like this." Some people might consider Mr. Brian Bent s lifestyle extreme, an anachronism perhaps. But we have a feeling that he d be OK with that. You see, when Brian purchased this 1927 Oakland he built the clutch pack himself. And while it had a Pontiac engine mounted in the chassis, he decided to move it forward. He thought about swapping out the wooden spokes for metal ones, but a chance encounter with a old man who shared an anecdote about metal spokes folding in a turn convinced him otherwise. Besides, they ve lasted this long, haven t they? And while it s not completely (or remotely) a Woodie, Brian uses the Oakland hot rod as his surf wagon, driving it out to San Onofre to catch waves. And while there is certainly nothing extreme about this, in and of itself, he also makes his own 1920s and 30s style surfboards. As well as his own clothing designed to look era-correct. Brian applies "Drive Tastefully" to his entire life, making sure that all the pieces fit him. Ironically, even GM thought the car didn t make sense (it was too big and seemed to overlap Pontiac s offerings) and killed off the brand in 1934. But, Brian says, "it fits me perfect." Mr. Bob Gough s family moved to France for a few years when he was thirteen years-old and thus he grew up idolizing European sports cars and looking down on American muscle. That was until he discovered the 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S. The Cuda Formula S was upgraded in-house by Plymouth with suspension and brakes that allow it to keep up with European sports cars in the twisties (that is, all but the tightest twisties). He purchased this car over twenty-three years ago and has gradually upgraded it. Bob replaced the transmission with a Tremec 5-speed and now runs a 340 cubic inch V8, rather than the original 273 ci engine. He s also replaced the original 14" wheels with custom 15" steelies. And the only suspension mod that Bob has made is replacing the original shocks with nitrogen shocks that vastly improve the handling. The Plymouth handles so well in fact, that he frequently surprises sports car owners on drives. And once the curves straighten out, its ample torque allows it to "leave Porsches behind." You do need to exercise caution entering corners though, because the Forumla S is prone to rear wheel lock-up—so early braking is a must! Even though Bob pushes the Cuda, it s actually docile to drive, "but who drives a car like that?" Drive Tastefully® http://Petrolicious.com http://facebook.com/Petrolicious

Starting any classic car is special. There is the sensation that something distinct and superior is taking place because of the rituals observed and details you notice. On this 1956 Porsche 356A T1 Speedster for example the windscreen is removable, the seats have a thin fiberglass shell and the steering wheel is elegant and spartan. There is little concession to comfort and virtually none to safety. When new, this was the least expensive Porsche available and had a less is more philosophy behind it. Indeed, the car was intended to be taken to the track and be a legitimate club-racing contender. It seems that that s precisely how this 356 spent a large portion of its early life. Raced around Connecticut, the car racked up trophies and actually won the E-Production Championship in 1963. The majority of this car s first 50,000 miles were racked up on the track. It wasn t designed to coddle. Although it only makes about 60hp, it causes an adrenaline rush as you re close to the road, the instruments, and there isn t a lot surrounding you. There s immediacy about the car. And according to the owner, Mr. Jon Warshawsky, "It feels like a racing machine." When driving on B-roads, "you feel like you should be on the track." There is an intimate mechanical interaction because the power-band is narrow; both you and the car have to agree that the next shift is appropriate otherwise there might be bogging or might over-rev the engine. The feeling that something great is happening is due to this constant dialogue between you and the car. Drive Tastefully® http://Petrolicious.com http://facebook.com/Petrolicious
