Few triumphs have inspired drivers like Sir Stirling Moss’ victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia. Then just 25 years old, driver Moss and co-driver Denis Jenkinson roared through 992 miles of Italian countryside in just 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds. Average speed? 98.53 miles per hour. Here, Moss tells the story of his victory in his own words. “Once the flag fell, I went flat out,” said Moss. “Obviously, when I’d see a car I caught up with, I really felt great about it, but I had no idea of the enormity of what it meant to myself because it’s really—it’s quite the thing to have on your CV.” Finishing ahead of the then-two times Grand Prix World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio, Moss’ achievement has long since been labeled “The greatest race”—a title that probably won’t be applied to any other motorsport event ever again. The 1955 Mille Miglia had it all: incredible drivers, now-iconic machines like the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR #722, and a harrowing course that was dangerous beyond belief. How dangerous? Moss said he had to wiggle the car from left to right on the road so that spectators would take a few steps back as he flew through the often small Italian towns along the route. “Oh, I’m certain it’s my greatest win,” said Moss. “I can’t think of any other car in the world that would have given me the opportunity to achieve the speeds we did.” Called SLR for Sport Leicht-Rennen (“Sport Light-Racing” in English) the 300 SLR was the world’s most advanced race car of its time: direct fuel-injected straight-8 engine, roughly 310 horsepower, and a top speed of around 180 mph (290 km/h). “The 722 is a really strong car…” said Moss. “The fact the car’s really old doesn’t matter—that car, the way it is now, I reckon we’d beat any other cars, anyway!” Drive Tastefully® http://Petrolicious.com http://facebook.com/Petrolicious

Allow your entire body to go limp. Shake it out. Let your head, neck legs and every part of your body relax. The only part of your body that will have tension is your ankle. 2) Large last stride / loading. Make your last stride a long "forward hopping" load. Your heel should come close to your behind. 3) Allow your knee to come through first. This is known as "storing the load". Your lower leg will form a V shape. Keep that V shape as long as possible and at the last minute let it extent in a WHIPPING motion through the ball. 4) Kick with the big toe knuckle. Approach the ball from a slight angle. The largest bone in your foot is the first metatarsal which is just above the big toe knuckle. This translates into FORCE or energy at impact. 5) Break the pane. Pretend that the ball is sitting in front of a large pane of glass. You want to break the pane with your body, not just your leg or foot. This means that your forward momentum should continue through the shot. This will also cause you to land on your SHOOTING foot, not your plant foot. 6) Watch your foot contact the ball. If you can see your foot strike the ball you are kicking properly. Doing this also keeps your body in a slightly "bent over" position. Straitening up will kill some of the power release. To prove this point to younger players you should have them start VERY close to the goal. Have them move back little by little WITHOUT changing their kicking effort. When you see them "forcing" their shot, have them move back very close and feel the loose shot again a few times. Then have them move back out to a far point and use the same "close kick". Both of you will be amazed.

Inspired by the Parma-Poggio di Berceto, a road race that went past his family home, Fabrizio Lorenzoni desired from an early age to experience the same rush of speed that a racing driver does. With a Fiat 1100 by Stanguellini in the garage, few classics can give the same open air excitement as Lorenzoni’s unique machine. Starting life as a race car in 1948, when Lorenzoni’s father bought the car in 1955 its history changed completely, Lorenzoni says. “We ve kept this car at home since 1955 when my father bought it, but he never raced it,” he says. “He bought it exclusively for the pleasure of having a sports car at home, and it was kept in the garage for a long time.” From 1977, however, a chance to commemorate the Parma-Poggio di Berceto race led the family to participate with the car in competition once again; this former racer had been used in several events in period, including the Targa Florio, Grand Prix of Naples, Grand Prix of Rome, and the Giro di Toscana. Automobile Stanguellini began life as a Fiat tuner, eventually moving to produce its own coachbuilt models for racing purposes. The first owner of this special car named it “Micia”, after his wife allowed him to compete in the Mille Miglia. After Lorenzoni’s first race outing with the car in 1977, he’s tried to research and piece together his car’s history from those early days of racing…when he’s not driving it, of course. “Once the driver is inside the cockpit he finds himself inside a little jewel,” Lorenzoni says, “…by which I mean that it s very comfortable and you can experience the same thrill the drivers experienced in the ‘50s and ‘60s.” “When I race, dressing the way drivers did in those days, I feel like I m one of them, he says, “…although they were crazy and I m a bit more calm.” Drive Tastefully® http://Petrolicious.com http://facebook.com/Petrolicious

Gosh I hate to say this word, have the yips? Let me show you what happens and then I m gonna show you how you can get out of it. Well when you have the yips what happens is as you come into this chip your left arm just stops and freezes, and you just scoop at it with your right hand. Those of you who have struggled with this shot know the feeling because you re like this. You usually will bone it across the green or hit it fat. So here s what I want you to do. I want you to hit some chip shots and as you come in, just let go of the club with your right hand and keep your left arm going. Because the yips are caused when the left arm stops and the right hand takes over. This is what it looks like. Normal setup, ball back, hands forward, let the left keep going. If you let the left arm keep going, you get out of those yips. PGA Tour golfer Tom Watson shows Golf Digest two ways to play any type of short-game chip shot. Transcript In this tip, I m going to show you an easy way to control the trajectory of your ball, and it has to do with the left hand grip. Well I m gonna chip this two different ways with two different left hand positions on the club. The first position is going to be what I call a weak position where the left hand instead of being in this position right here, I m gonna take the left hand and move it to the left and put the left thumb down the middle, put the right hand over a little bit. This is gonna create extra loft and impact making the ball go higher. Put the ball a little bit farther forward, weaken your left hand grip, make sure that, again, you still have that little hip slide right here. And this is what happens. Left hand right down the top. Ball goes up in the air. Now, what happens if you wanted to hit the ball with the ball rolling more, especially, this is a good shot for into the wind. What I do, instead of weakening the left hand grip on here, what I ll do, I ll strengthen it even more. I ll look down here and I ll see, maybe, almost three knuckles like this. And then, instead of playing the ball slightly forward in my stance, I will play it a little bit farther back to my stance, again, making sure that I have a little slide here with my hips, like this. This takes the loft off the golf club, but watch it roll now. The trajectory was much lower, the ball rolled, that s a great running shot for, especially into the wind, but anytime you want the ball to get on the green and run. Designed to be a grand tourer beyond reproach, the French brand Facel quickly earned a reputation for style, speed, and quality through the ’50s as it wood the European elite. The company’s slogan was, “For the few who own the finest,” and it’s easy to see why Facel cars are still highly prized today. For restorer Jasper Beukenkamp, Facel cars are a special sort of passion. “The cars used to be purchased by wealthy people,” Beukenkamp says, “artists and even kings. Known owners of Facel Vegas were Ava Gardner, Tony Curtis, Ringo Starr, and Stirling Moss.” The car here is a Facel Vega Facel II, first introduced in 1962 as a replacement for the company’s earlier designs. Though it looks quite familiar to Facel models produced before, the Facel II was by many measures the better car—even calling it the “Fastest 4-seater coupé in the world.” With lots of Chrysler V8 power under its hood, the Facel II is, as Beukenkamp says, still very sought-after but very hard to find; over two years of production, only about 180 Facel IIs were produced before the firm went bankrupt. Production of the expensive grand tourers used to be subsidized by Facel-Metallon’s steel stamping factory and car body production line, but the losses were too great.
