Tennis Topspin Secrets: How To Hit Perfect Topspin In 5 Steps Being able to hit with perfect topspin in tennis is one of the most important elements of being a solid, consistent tennis player. There are two main obstacles in tennis - the net, and the lines. So clearing the net and hitting within the confined space. When you increase your topspin levels and lift the ball, you can clear the net, essentially eliminating the net from play, but you ll also get the ball to dip inside the tennis court, creating the perfect margin within your tennis game! A More Consistent Tennis Player: By hitting with perfect topspin, you ll instantly become a much more consistent tennis player. You ll be able to hit the ball harder yet still keep the ball in play, especially if you hit with a good 4-5 feet of net clearance. Tennis is won and lost on errors, the fewer errors you make, the more chances you ll have to win the tennis match! Tennis Topspin Secrets That Nadal Uses: Not only will you become a much more consistent tennis player if you increase your topspin levels, but you ll also gain two more major advantages, the first one is when you hit with more topspin, especially on clay courts or hard courts, the ball will bounce much more aggressively than if you hit a flat ball. The topspin, mixed together with the height of your shot, will make the ball kick off the court and push your opponent further back, this is the exact tactic that Rafael Nadal uses against his opponents, he forces them to deal with shoulder or head height ball time and time again. You ll also be able to use the entire width of the court because, with increased topspin levels, you ll be able to hit great angles that will force your opponents to chase balls down, into the tramlines or even beyond. Tennis Topspin Secrets - How To Hit Perfect Topspin In 5 Steps: Step One - The foundation of hitting with perfect topspin in tennis is to use a low to high swing path during the contact zone. This means that the racket head is below the contact point prior to hitting the forehand or backhand, and as you make contact with the tennis ball, the racket is traveling upwards to brush the back of the ball. If you imagine the ball as a clock, when creating heavy topspin, aim to hit the ball from 6-12 o clock. Step Two - Changing the angle of your racket face. When you want to produce more topspin, one of the secrets you can use is to close the racket face (the side you will hit the ball with) towards the ground. Once you combine this closed racket face with an upwards swing path, you ll be creating the perfect angle to produce the maximum topspin with your tennis strokes. Be careful not to use a linear swing with the strings closed though, as this will make the ball dip into the net or even hit the ground on your side of the court! Step Three - Use a circular loop. By using a circular loop on your forehand and backhand, you ll be able to create momentum and racket head speed during the low to high phase of the circle. If you use a linear swing, this is great for hitting flatter tennis shots, but it won t help you hit with perfect topspin. However, if you use a circular loop and time the contact point out in front of your body, you should be able to generate heavy topspin with less effort. Step Four - The windshield wiper motion. On your tennis forehand, as you make contact with the ball, try to use the windshield wiper motion, this is where the tip of the racket goes from a low position to a high position. Just before the contact point, the racket head should be below the grip of the racket, and as you brush the ball, the tip of the racket will end up facing the sky and then whip across the body. This creates great racket head speed during the contact zone while using a low to high swing. This is created by using supination and pronation. On the two-handed tennis backhand, the top hand will be doing the exact same motion. On the one-handed tennis backhand, you ll have the palm facing the ground as you make contact (fist facing the sky) and as you brush upwards, the palm of the hand will then open up to the sky (fist down). This will create that low to high swing during the contact point. Step Five - Loading and unloading. Using the legs to drive up into the ball will help you generate more topspin if you time the drive well.
