Wildlife in Cornwall - Hoopoe, Spoonbill, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Redpoll and More Filmed and Edited by Paul Dinning - Wildlife in Cornwall
Great Spotted Woodpecker Chick at Tehidy Woods Cornwall UK Filmed over the period of a month in the spring of 2012. About blackbird-sized and striking black-and-white. It has a very distinctive bouncing flight and spends most of its time clinging to tree trunks and branches, often trying to hide on the side away from the observer. Its presence is often announced by its loud call or by its distinctive spring drumming display. The male has a distinctive red patch on the back of the head and young birds have a red crown. The lesser spotted woodpecker is the smallest and least common of the three woodpeckers that are resident in Britain. The male is distinguished from the female by his bright red crown. It tends to nest and feed higher up and is quieter in its tapping. Usually located by its call, and its drumming. When feeding it creeps along branches and flutters from branch to branch, flying with an undulating flight in the open Filmed in the spring of 2012 Video Produced by Paul Dinning - Wildlife in Cornwall
Wheatear at Pendeen - Wildlife in Cornwall - Traquet Motteaux The wheatear is a small mainly ground-dwelling bird. It hops or runs on the ground. It is blue-grey above with black wings and white below with an orange flush to the breast. It has a black cheek. In flight it shows a white rump and a black T shape on its tail. It is a summer visitor and passage migrant. Birds breed mainly in western and northern Britain and western Ireland, although smaller numbers do breed in southern and eastern England. It winters in central Africa. Filmed on 7th October 2013 Video Produced by Paul Dinning - Wildlife in Cornwall
Daurian Shrike or Isabelline Shrike at Pendeen Cornwall UK The Isabelline Shrike or Daurian Shrike (Lanius isabellinus) is a member of the shrike family. It was previously considered conspecific with the Red-backed Shrike and Red-tailed Shrike. This migratory medium-sized passerine eats large insects, small birds, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a larder. It breeds in open cultivated country, preferably with thorn bushes. The plumage is isabelline, the sandy colour which gives rise to its name. It has a red tail. Young birds can be distinguished from young Red-backed Shrikes by the much sparser vermiculations on the underparts. Filmed on 7th October 2013 Video Produced by Paul Dinning - Wildlife in Cornwall
