Papagaj tigrica je, uz mačku, najzastupljeniji kućni ljubimac na svijetu. Tigrice su idealni ljubimci za djecu iznad osam godina. Vrlo su pitoma, živahna i znatiželjna bića. Ukoliko im poklonite puno pažnje i strpljenja, lako će se pripitomiti. Životni vek im traje između deset i 14 godina.  Papagaji su odlični zabavljači, jer izvode razne trikove, zvižde, inetpertiraju i ponavljaju zvukove i melodije ,a mnogi veoma uspešno imitiraju i ljudski govor. Tigrice su izuzetno socijalna bića i trebalo bi da ih držite najmanje u paru. Čovek, ogledalce ili plastična ptica ne zamenjuju im društvo. Usamljena tigrica može čak da se razboli.  Sposobnost papagaja da imitira ljudski govor čini ga jedinstvenim i posebnim, a često i povećava njihovu popularnost kao kućnih ljubimaca. Ipak, neće sve ptice koje imaju sposobnost da pričaju zapravo pričati, a neke vrste je lakše naučiti nego druge. Pored toga, ne pričaju sve vrste ptica na isti način: are mako imaju grub, hrapav glas, dok kakadu ptice imaju veoma blag, milozvučan glas ali ograničen vokabular. Tigrice nisu zahtevne što se tiče hrane: gotova mešavina semenki, sezonsko voće i povrće, kao i omiljeni bar za ptice. Svo voće i povrće mora da bude sveže, neprskano, oprano i osušeno. Ponudite im i minerale i obavezno sipinu kost.  Radoznale su i često grickaju sve što im deluje zanimljivo, pa pripazite na korice knjiga, papire, dokumente, kablove i sjajne prednete dok ptica slobodno leti po stanu. Tigrice su odlični ljubimci za neiskusne vlasnike koji po prvi put imaju papagaja za ljubimca.
