Rabbits have a complex language all their own. They communicate with each other their ears, tail, nose, body position and some vocalizations. In this video, you will learn the essentials that will help you understand and communicate with your rabbit. Flattening If your rabbit s ears are flattened, it means they are scared. It is also rabbit’s instinctive attempt to hide when they are afraid of a threat. In the wild, rabbits will try to hide in vegetation by making themselves as flat as possible. But make no mistake. Oftentimes, rabbits melt into the ground when you give them a back massage. That just means the rabbit is happy. Angry If your rabbit turns and moves away flicking the back feet, it’s a sign they are angry and probably want to be left alone for some time. In this situation, the rabbit’s ears are often held against the back. You often see this behavior when you put your rabbit down after holding them for too long. Likewise, thumping back legs is a sign of a rabbit who is angry or threatened and want you to stay away. Alert If your rabbit has their ears up and is staring intently in a certain direction, it means they are on high alert. More often than not, rabbits go on alert when they think there’s a possibility of danger. Relaxed and confident When a rabbit’s ears are resting at 45 degrees angle, it means the bunny is relaxed and comfortable with their environment. Their ears will be neither standing straight up, nor flat on their back, and their nose will be twitching at a normal speed. This position is a rabbit’s default, normal body language, and it indicates that they have settled into their environment. They are comfortable in their home and they’re not scared of being attacked. Periscoping When a rabbit stands on their hind legs, it means they are curious and trying to get a better view of their surroundings. Rabbits also use this technique to beg for food. Shaking ears Sometimes rabbits will slightly twitch their head to show they are happy. Like a mini binky, this little shake of their ears is a sign that your bunny is excited. If you are reaching to pet your bunny, but they shake their ears as your hand gets close to them, they are trying to tell you they are not interested in being pet right now and probably want to be left alone for some time. On the other hand, if your rabbit shakes their head frequently or starts scratching at their ears, it means their ears are itchy. Pronounced and frequent head shaking is a sign of ear mites or a bacterial infection in the ear. Circling When a rabbit runs circles around your feet, it’s a sign of love and excitement. Throwing Rabbits sometimes throw items around. These can include their toys, water or food bowls. This happens when bunnies are playing. But remember, some rabbit may toss things around when they’re frustrated or bored. You often see this among rabbits who are kept in a hutch that’s too small. Boxing When rabbit stand up on their back legs and raise their front paws to box at anyone who comes close, they are displaying the boxing behavior. This behavior indicates the rabbit is unhappy and angry. You may see this behavior when two rabbits are fighting, or when people introduce their pet rabbit to a dog. You may think the rabbit is being cute, but in reality, they are scared and ready to fight and defend themselves. Cautious When rabbits slowly tip-toe around with their ears forward, it means they are cautious. Butt Twitching You may notice your bunny s butt starts to twitch when you give them a tasty treat. This is a sign that your rabbit is happy and is enjoying the yummy treat that you just gave them. Flopping Flopping is when bunnies throw themselves onto their side. It’s also a sign that the rabbit feels safe and relaxed in their environment. Binkying Binkying is a large jump in the air while the rabbit slightly twists its body or head at the same time. Rabbits binky when they feel very happy or excited. Nesting If you have a female bunny, you may observe a nesting behavior. She’ll dig and gather bedding materials to make a comfy nest for her babies. While this behavior often occurs in pregnant females, unsprayed female rabbits may exhibit this behavior too. It is a rabbit version of a false pregnancy. Sniffing W.By wiggling their nose, more scent receptors make contact with the air. This means that they are more likely to detect and identify the scents in their environment. And you have probably noticed that rabbits sniff objects close up. This is because rabbits are farsighted. So they waggle their nose to help them find things. Grooming Rabbits are very clean animals, and they will spend a lot of time grooming themselves.And you may notice that your rabbit often punches the air before grooming. This is because they want to shake any debris off their paws before they rub their face If your rabbit grooms himself when you are around, it means they trust you.

In this video, we’ll talk about the top 8 common sounds cats make and explain the meaning behind them. When cats make sounds, they’re trying to communicate an emotion or desire. Some cat noises indicate contentment and happiness, while others reflect fear, worry, or even anger. Hissing Contrary to popular belief, hissing is a normal way that cats express fear, not aggression or hostility. It is a cat’s clear way of saying, “Back off or I’ll be forced to attack.” Cats characteristically want to avoid confrontation at all costs, so think of hissing as a warning. You may see cats make this sound when they feel threatened, if a mother cat has kittens to protect, or if the vet is trying to examine your feline. The hissing sound is usually paired with other feline body language signs like bared teeth, flattened ears, and an arched back. And remember, cats may also hiss at you when they’re in pain, and you touch them on a particularly sensitive part of their body. Chattering Cat chattering almost always happens when a cat is fascinated by a visual stimulus such as a bird or rodent outside a window. If you watch your cat’s body language when they chatter, you’ll often notice that their eyes widen with excitement, their ears tilt forward, and they are fixated on their target. This is because chattering is often a reaction to prey. Theories suggest that cats chatter in a response to the excitement of seeing their hunt, and the frustration of not being able to catch it. A prey being near but untouchable is so provocative that it causes a feline to express themselves physically. Meowing Meowing is an interesting vocalization because adult cats don t meow at each other. Kittens meow to draw the attention of their mothers– like when they are cold or hungry. But once the kittens are grown, the meowing stops. This means that meowing is often not part of adult cat-to-cat communication—it is used almost exclusively with humans. In general, cats meow at people when they want something—like attention, food, warmth, or perhaps access to a closed room. Keep in mind that meowing comes in several variations, and we can interpret what our pet is trying to say by paying attention to the intensity and tone of the meow as well as observing their body language. In general, the more intense a cat’s meow, the more important or urgent the message. Purring Cats purr when they are happy and content. Cats also purr as a way to soothe or comfort themselves when they’re sick or anxious. Studies have shown that the low frequency of a cat purring causes a series of vibrations inside their body that can relieve pains, heal injuries, and repair tendons. Research has shown that the vibrations caused by purring can promote bone growth. In fact, purr-like vibration devices have been proposed for potential use in space flights to retain astronauts’ bone density. Purring also acts as a relaxing internal massage for felines. Chirping or Trilling Trilling is a chirpy, high-pitched sound that is mostly used by female cats. This is because when kittens are young, the mother cat will trill at them as a cue to encourage her kittens to follow her, or as a strategy to capture her kittens’ attention. If your cat is trilling at you, there’s a good chance they’re requesting the same—they want to get your attention! Cats also trill to greet their humans. It’s a cat’s way of saying, “Hello, I’m here!”. All in all, the trilling sound is almost always a sign of a positive emotion or a welcoming vibe. Caterwauling Caterwauling is a cat vocalization that sounds like a cross between a yowl, a howl, and a whine. More often than not, an unspayed female cat in heat will produce this disturbing sound to attract prospective mates. Growling The growl is another sound that cats make when they are angry or want to scare off a potential threat. It is a very clear warning to step back and may be the last step before attacking. But remember, if your cat growls frequently, it may be a sign of pain or health issue. Yowling Yowling sounds like a long, drawn-out moan that comes from a cat’s throat. Unlike meowing, yowling is not only a cat-to-human communication. Adult cats also yowl at one another, usually during their breeding season. A yowl may indicate that the cat is not feeling well or is in distress or pain. Yowling may also occur when the cat has some sort of territorial concern – like when something in her environment (such as a new cat in her area) isn’t to her liking. All in all, yowling is a cat’s way of saying “Stay out of my territory”, or “I want to mate”. Cats often scream after a mating session or when they are in the middle of a cat fight. Screaming may also indicate that your cat is very sick or in serious pain. Breed Talk As a rule of thumb, longhaired cats tend to be less talkative and outgoing than shorthaired felines. If you prefer a less vocal cat, consider a Russian Blue, Persian, Chartreux, Maine Coon, or Norwegian Forest Cat.

The molt is going on so out with the old feathers and in with the new. Most all have shed their flights at this point. All but Julep has lost the longest tail feathers. Lots of extra bathing to help, a bit extra sleep and PLENTY of feathers to clean up. Rukus just had his 5th birthday this past Sunday and I still plan to have our little party for our last three birthdays. I got a bit behind with that with the contractor being over 4 times in the past week. On the upside a new contractor will be here early next week to get measurements and our ideas for the aviaries. Hopefully he can come up with a quote within a couple weeks so we can get things rolling and start ordering materials. Exciting new things we plan to share soon outside of those things. **If you notice in the coming weeks the birds looking rough around the edges, don t worry their not sick just getting some new beautiful feathers in. This is also the time Bob and Cypress get their neck ring. I can already see a few of Bob s coming in around his beak.

Oh and Harley comes to visit too, I think it was all a bit overwhelming, your favourite person and a new dog to contest cuteness with!!
