This guide will put you through the process of breaking free from a dog attack. 1. Know the Most Dangerous Dog Breeds Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Presa Canarios, and Hybrid-wolves make up the top 5 most dangerous dogs. These dogs can be trained to be friendly, or they can be trained to be attack dogs. 2. Avoid the attack Before it comes to any encounter with a dog, first, you should try to avoid the attack. • Don’t smile o Smiling can expose your teeth and bare teeth signify aggression to a dog. Dogs often take this as a threat. • Don’t run o Fast-moving people such as joggers or cyclists tend to be at risk of a dog attack. Running from an attacking dog is never a good idea. For one, most dogs are faster than humans, running also excites the dog and even encourages it to attack more ferociously. So, stand still! • Face sideways and avoid staring at the dog. o Try as much as possible to direct your gaze far away from the dog. Making direct eye contact tends to aggravate the dog and trigger an attack. While you channel your gaze away from the dog, it sends signals to the pet that you’re not a threat and it can let you go unharmed. • Don’t show signs of fear o Showing signs of fear make dogs more confident in attacking you. On the other hand, if a dog realizes that it can’t scare you, it might think you are a dangerous person. • Do not make any sudden movements. o Rather, keep your hands down at your sides. This may help to calm down the dog and show it that you are not a threat. • Don’t turn your back. o Dogs often take this as a sign of weakness or an opening to attack. • Distract the dog o If you re with anything like a bottle or a stick, throw it to the side. This will create a distraction and the dog may even run after it. • Give commands o In an authoritative voice, command the dog to stop or sit. Some well trained dogs will respond to this command and stop. Most often, these tips will keep a dog from attacking. But what if you couldn’t avoid the attack? 3. During the attack • Attack the dog’s weakest points o The weakest points of a dog are its eyes, neck or nose. Hit them as hard as you can. Hitting a dog’s throat or neck may cause the canine to choke. It s time to get mean to survive. • Jacket trick o Do you have something to wrap around your arm? Say, a jacket? Use fire extinguishers or a distractor instead. • Use your weight o Your weight is a great weapon to protect you. Press the dog against the ground using your weight. Dog bones don’t have the strength to withstand your weight. • Protect the Vital Parts of your Body o Whatever it takes, never let the dog get to your neck or face. Stay Standing to protect your face • Use an object o A dog’s only weapon is its teeth. Put something between your body and the dog s teeth if you can. This could be a stick, your sleeve or your purse. • The worst-case scenario o The worst scenario is when a dog has taken you to the ground. Your first instinct should be to protect your neck and face. Cover your head with your arms and let the dog bite your forearm. Your arm will bleed less than your leg because it has a higher proportion of bone. Then attack the dog’s eyeball by burying your thumb into the dog s eye. 4. After the attack • Get Medical Help o If the dog bites you, consider visiting a doctor for proper treatment. Don’t overlook the scratch and small wounds because they can be harmful, especially when the dog is rabid. • Inform the Authorities o Whether the dog attacks you or not, it’s imperative to report it to the authorities. This could be because they feel threatened when protecting their territory, family or themselves or they may view you as lunch. Unfortunately, most people are not trained on how to protect themselves when an animal attacks, causing some encounters to be fatal. However, it is important to see the statistics of wild animal attacks, as many of these are exaggerated. For instance, on average, sharks only cause about five deaths per year, wolves only cause eight deaths per year, and lions at twenty per year. On the other side of the spectrum though, adorable elephants cause about six hundred deaths per year as do hippopotamus’, whereas crocodiles kill about a thousand and the snake at one-hundred thousand people per year. With this said, here are some tips on how to protect yourself if you find yourself in an encounter with a wild animal: • Jellyfish unfortunately it is really hard to avoid getting “stung” or “burned” by a jellyfish as they are often hard to see in water. However, if you do find yourself with a jellyfish burn, immediately wash the area with salt water. Do not use pure water as it will only make the burn and ache from it worse. If possible, use tweezers to remove any of the needles from the stung region and then spread antihistamine ointment onto the burn. • Sharks out of the 150 shark species that exist, only about twenty of them will actually attack a human. Most of them will not see you as lunch, however if a shark does become interested in you, you will need to know how to break away. The first thing is to never turn your back on a shark and do not try to move in a panicked fashion as they will then perceive you as prey. Make sure to move slowly and do not allow blood or urine to get into the water. If you do get caught by a shark, punch at its eyes and gills as these regions are extremely sensitive. • Kangaroos kangaroos can be dangerous to a human if you enter their territory and make them feel threatened, otherwise just stay away from kangaroos that show aggression. To avoid a conflict with one, cough quietly and make your coughs short in duration, this tricks the kangaroo into thinking that you have a disease. Then slowly back away from the kangaroo, making yourself smaller and less of a threat. Do not panic and turn your back to run, it’ll easily catch up with you due to its high velocity jumps. • Large cats and Lions: although it is rare for you to encounter a large cat like lion, if you do, make sure to maintain eye contact and stay facing the animal. By doing this, it lowers the chance of the lion attacking you in the moments that you are distracted. Doing this will make lions think that you are stronger than him. You should also be confident when facing a lion so that it perceives your presence as irritating. • Elephants: Elephants are well-known for attacking people, especially if you encounter a female elephant who is a mother as it will perceive you as a threat to its babies. If you are close to an elephant, make note of what their body language is saying. If they pull their ears back and curl their trunk it means that they view you as a threat and are going to attack. If this happens, don’t run but do try to find a barrier or cover like a tree or stone to help put space between the elephant and yourself. • Rhinoceroses: Rhinoceroses don’t have a good eyesight which means that they are super easy to provoke by just frightening them. You cannot outrun a rhinoceros because they can reach an upward speed of up to 40 miles per hour. 6 Easy Ways to Stop Your Puppy From Biting Biting is part of a puppy s normal behavior, however, it s important that your dog understands that teeth on your skin are not allowed. 1. React consistently to your puppy bites Whenever your puppy bites you, react by saying "NO!" in a very firm voice. Also, squeal and immediately stop playing with your puppy. Scientists found that the dogs were much more likely to accept a treat from the actor who tried to help and showed kindness toward the owner. Most dogs also accepted food from the passive actor, but they were not willing to trust the person who didn’t lend a hand. Dogs can detect liars Another study conducted in Japan followed a similar experiment to find out if dogs can recognize an untrustworthy person. In this experiment, the scientists placed two containers near the dogs. One had treats inside, but the other was empty. In the first test, a person pointed to the container that concealed a treat, but the second time, the person pointed to the empty container instead. The dogs were happy to find the treat the first round, but were disappointed when they found out they were lied to in the second time.
