Before bathing, dead hairs were removed from the top coat (wire hair) by hand stripping and pulled from the roots. By removing the hair completely, it creates space for new coat to grow. If you don t remove dead hair from your top coat (wire hair), the hair follicle openings become smaller and problems begin to arise. It does not produce sebum, becomes inflamed, and negatively affects the overall appearance of the coat. Some may not like the feeling of plucking, but it doesn t hurt. Don´t worry about that. When Westie s puppies are 12 to 14 weeks old, they can begin their first hand stripping. Generally, you can hand strip your westie every 4 to 6 weeks, but if your westie´s coat grows very slowly, you can probably wait up to 8 weeks before taking the coat again.
