They are searching for a mate A cat’s reproductive drive is a powerful thing. Some cats may run away in search of a mate. If an unneutered male catches a whiff of a female in heat, they’ll do just about anything to track them down. If those urges carry them far enough away from the neighborhood that they’re familiar with, they could struggle to find their way back home again. Neutering or spraying a cat will significantly reduce a cat’s urge to escape in search of a mate. They don’t feel well If your cat suddenly starts running away from you and it’s out of character, this could indicate that they are not feeling well. When cats are ill, they prefer to go somewhere isolated to recover on their own. Likewise, if your cat is on the verge of dying, they may wander off in search of solitude. They want to claim more territory Cats have an insatiable thirst for acquiring new territory. Once your cat has become completely comfortable inside your home environment, they may desire to expand their kingdom. That means venturing out beyond the limits of your house. It may cause them get lost and never return. They want to hunt Cats are known for their strong hunting instinct. They love to hunt and chase prey animals. Your cat may be distracted while chasing a rodent, or they may be lured to explore further afield. Before they know it, they’re lost and far from home. They’re Cheating on You If you have an outdoor cat that leaves at the same time every day, there’s a good chance that they have another family somewhere nearby. Other friendly humans may have taken a liking to your cat and begun feeding them. Maybe they have tastier treats, or show them more affection than you do. It’s very common for cats to make friends with other people in the area. Something Has Spooked Your Cat Cats are super-sensitive little animals. When they get frightened, one of their strongest instincts will be to get away from whatever s scaring them. Many outdoor cats have been run off by a neighbor’s dog. If there has been a thunderstorm or some fireworks nearby, your cat may suddenly get away to protect themselves They’re Feeling Neglected If you leave your kitty alone at home for long periods of time, or don’t give them as much attention and affection as they need, they could run away searching for love elsewhere. They are curious Cats also run away just because they are curious animals who love to explore the world. Maybe your cat likes chasing insects or butterflies; maybe they got distracted by a neighbor kid or a bird. If there is something enticing nearby, your cat is likely to roam away from home. Can Cats Find Their Way Home? Cats have great intelligence and acutely developed senses, but there is no guarantee they will always be able to find their way back home. Some will be able to get their bearings from their environment, but others may escape to the point where they lose these bearings and put their safety at risk. When they are lost, some cats find their way back home because they leave olfactory traces along the way. They rub their head, scratch trees, and pee to diffuse their pheromones and leave a trace for them to find later. Some evidence supports the idea that cats are even able to use the earth’s geomagnetic fields to locate their homes. If your cat is lost, the first thing you should do is look for it in the immediate area. You can also publicize them on social media, put up fliers, check with shelters and speak to your local vet. If your cat has a microchip then a vet can scan them and call you using your up-to-date information.

In this video, we will talk about 15 things that your dog does for you and explain the benefits of having a dog. They comfort you when you are sad Dogs can understand when their owners are sad or anxious through visual observations, auditory clues, and changes in our scent. Studies have shown that dogs not only feel distress when they see that their owners are sad, but will also try to do something to help. When you are feeling blue, many dogs will offer comfort by cuddling next to or licking you. Some dogs will put a toy in your lap, or nudge you to cheer you up. They greet you when you come home Researchers have observed that some wild dog species will lick other members of the pack to welcome them when they return home. When your dog licks you when you come home, it is their way of greeting you … like they are saying ‘Welcome back! . Licking can also be a way for dogs to bond with family members. For example, mother dogs will often lick their puppies to groom them and offer comfort. If your dog licks you frequently, it’s not always because you have the residues of yummy food on your skin. They do it because they want to groom you to show that they care about your well-being and strengthen their bond with you. They make you more attractive Studies have shown women are more attracted to men with dogs than men without dogs. People with dogs are perceived as being nicer and more caring individuals. They keep your heart healthy Cuddling and petting your dog produces a calm, relaxed feeling which is caused by the release of oxytocin in the brain. This feel-good chemical makes your body feel more peaceful and even helps to lower blood pressure. This also translates to a decreased risk of heart disease. One study found that dog owners are 31% less likely to die from a heart attack or stroke than non-dog owners. They protect you when you sleep Have you ever wondered why your dog sleeps near you at night? Many dogs are well aware that they, and their humans, are vulnerable when sleeping. Sleeping close-by is one way to stay safe and protect you, and themselves, should a predator launch a nighttime attack. Another reason that dogs like to sleep next to you is to share warmth. When your dog snuggles with you, they are seeking warmth and helping your stay warm. Of course, dogs also sleep with you to show you affection and love! They care for you when you are sick Dogs have an acute sense of smell, and so have the ability to sniff out a chemical change in a human body caused by a disease. Most dogs respond to a sick individual by becoming empathetic and more attentive. They lie beside you or cuddle you. They help you live longer There is scientific research that suggests dog owners live longer than those without pets. This is mainly because pets alleviate tension and help us relax. They keep loneliness at bay. They even help lower our blood pressure. Their puppy-dog eyes make you happier Just looking at a dog can lift your spirits. A 2009 study in Japan found that staring into your dog’s eyes raises your level of oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone.”. So looking at your dog isn’t just pleasant, it’s physiologically beneficial to you They boost your immune system A study in the scientific journal Pediatrics has found that children who live with pets have a lower predisposition for general illness. Additionally, those who do end up becoming sick, recover more quickly. This is because having a pet stimulates and strengthens a child’s immune system and helps better protect against bacteria and viruses. They keep you safe A dogs’ natural instinct is to protect their family. Whether you’re taking your canine friend out for a walk or getting all snuggled up in bed, just having Fido around can help put your mind at ease. They encourage you to move Those long treks along sidewalks, trails, and fetch games add up. A 2019 British study discovered that dog owners are nearly four times more likely than non-dog owners to meet daily physical activity guidelines. They make you feel less alone. Dogs can be there for you even when people can’t. They offer unconditional love, emotional support, and constant cuddles that help stave off social isolation. They protect your baby Dogs know your little one is a member of their pack, and that they are the most vulnerable. Because dogs have a strong instinct to guard their pack and family members, they can be very protective of your baby. They prevent allergies for you and your loved ones Sharing a home with a furred animal exposes you to pet dander which stimulates your immune system to help reduce the risks of allergies and asthma. They help lower stress levels Multiple studies have shown that dogs help alleviate stress and anxiety.

Whether you’re out of the house for several days on vacation or simply gone for a few hours to run some errands…what does your dog think when you’re away? Do they think you have abandoned them? Do they feel confused? And have you ever wondered what dogs think of humans? Do our dogs know we’re humans, or do they think we’re just larger dogs? Keep watching for a thorough breakdown of what’s happening inside your dog’s mind and In general, leaving the house can cause separation anxiety in dogs. Research suggests that eight out of 10 dogs find it hard to cope when left alone. Dogs are social pack animals. Therefore, they become upset and stressed when they are separated from their human family. That said, if you frequently leave the house to go to work or school, your dog learns your routine and will expect you to leave and return at a certain time. Although dogs don t wear watches, they do have their own internal clocks and concept of time. But remember, if you have adopted a new dog to your family and you leave them alone at home, they may feel confused or abandoned because they are yet to become accustomed to your schedule. Do dogs know how long you ve been gone? Studies have been conducted on whether dogs can judge how long their owners have been gone, and if they miss their humans more intensely with time. One experiment in 2011 conducted by Swedish researchers placed cameras that recorded how dogs reacted when their humans were away for half an hour, two hours, and four hours. The experiment showed that dogs greeted their owners with greater excitement when their humans left them alone for two hours as opposed to just half an hour, which suggests that dogs can, indeed, tell the difference between these times. However, dogs did not react differently when their humans were gone for two hours versus four hours. What this tells us is that dogs feel time differently to us. While your dogs do have some concept of longer versus shorter time spans, they won t understand exactly how long you were away. What Do Dogs Think About All Day? Have you ever wondered what dogs think about? Scientist believe the way dogs think is probably very different from the way we do. We humans have many structures that help us interpret the ideas and thoughts we have, but dogs don’t. For example, dogs do not have "language" because they don t have the Wernicke, a language processing center in their brain, so they cannot comprehend language. The small amount of scientific research out there on dogs’ brains leads us to believe that dogs can only think subconsciously. They can draw upon memories to guide future behavior, however they do not come up with their own thoughts or ideas about a situation. Therefore, when your dog is chilling out, they are not thinking about anything in particular. What Do Dogs Think About When They Stare? It all depends on what the dog is staring at. If your dog is staring at another dog, they might not be thinking. Instead, they are staring to assert dominance. If your dog is staring at you, that’s a very different story. More often than not, dogs watch you to understand what you’re doing. Dogs also stare at our eyes to express love Do dogs know that we are not dogs? Even though dogs come in a wide variety of body shapes and sizes, dogs can tell instantly whether they’re interacting with another dog or a human. Studies have found that dogs have a mental category for humans. If they identify a creature as falling in that category, they treat them differently. Dogs can even differentiate between dogs and non-dog animals, by visual observation. In a 2013 study, researchers at The University of Paris found that dogs were able to separate the images of dogs from non-dogs. Do dogs really miss us when we are gone? Scientists gave the dogs five scents. The scent of a familiar and strange human, the scent of a familiar and strange dog, and the dogs’ own scent. Interestingly, when the dogs smelt the scent of a familiar human, the caudate nucleus of their brains lit up - a region associated with positive expectations and rewards. Another study published in Behavioral Processes looked at how dogs’ behavior changed around people with different levels of familiarity. In one of the experiments, scientists put dogs in an unfamiliar room with three human participants - their owner, a familiar person, and a stranger. When the human participants left the room, scientists observed that the dogs would wait behind a door that THEIR OWNER went through, and not the other humans. While research is ongoing, combining the knowledge of dogs loving their humans and the studies we have leads to the belief that dogs do in fact miss us when we re gone. Do dogs get bored? Dogs are intelligent animals—and, just like any other intelligent animal, dogs need a certain level of stimulation in order to feel engaged. If they go too long without that level of stimulation, boredom is going to kick in.
