17 signs that you may be a genius without knowing it. 1. you forget where you kept your keys or phone According to many psychologists, being scatterbrained practically guarantees your standing as a genius. When you’re a genius, it’s hard to be preoccupied with the mystical meaning behind the workings of the universe 2. You have the mark of a genius on your fingernails. Most people’s fingernails have a half-moon circle at the base of them called a lunula. However, having a bright white half circle at the base of your thumb has been determined to be the sign of a genius. People who have this distinctive mark on their thumbnails are said to not only to be adept at remembering and connecting chronological events but also possess logical reasoning abilities. 3. Your frontal lobe is bigger. Although you can’t really measure your brain size without some heavy-duty scientific equipment, one scientific brain study conducted on twins found that the twin with the larger amount of grey matter in the frontal lobe did better on intelligence tests. The link between intelligence and brain volume has been explored in other studies 4. You’re a chocoholic. If your brain craves chocolate, this may be a connection to how smart you are. Consuming flavanols, a bioactive found in cocoa, can help with boosting your cognitive performance. Researchers at the Universities of Rome and L’Aquila in Italy discovered that eating chocolate improves attention span, memory, and the processing speed of the brain. This study showed that eating chocolate not only boosted test scores during the study but that consuming a little chocolate every day can improve cognitive performance over time. 5. You’re a procrastinator. Geniuses tend to take their time with important decisions, not taking the easy way, and sometimes, no way at all if there isn’t a brilliant solution. 6. You wonder about the meaning of life. When you are talking to yourself and you ask, “What’s the point of everything?” you are asking the question of someone who has a genius mind. This may also make you anxious, which is also a typical genius behavior. 7. You have terrible penmanship. If someone told you that you should be a doctor because your handwriting is so messy, they are partially right. Doctors have to write medical terminology and prescriptions quickly all day long – writing so fast that their handwriting becomes illegible. It’s the same with geniuses. They are thinking faster than their handwriting can keep up with. Messy handwriting is also the sign of a highly creative person, as confirmed by a study published in the Physiological Science Journal. 8. You’re the oldest child. Recent research from the Journal of Human Resources proves that the oldest child will score higher on IQ tests, and this has nothing to do with genetics. It’s the fact that parents are always overly interactive and heavily invested with their first child. Parents who want to do everything right with the first child will then relax with the others, The older child is usually more intelligent than the others. 9. You learned to read early. Reading from an early age - because you want to - increases both verbal and nonverbal abilities like reasoning and comprehension. Researchers in the UK confirmed this in 2012. They found that the siblings who learned to read earlier also scored higher on cognitive ability tests. 10. You tend to be a loner. According to the British Journal of Psychology, people who like to be alone are generally more intelligent. And talking to yourself, if you are a genius, is also fairly common. 11. You may have been labeled as one of the ‘quiet people.’ 12. Your desk is unorganized and your house is a mess. If the first thing people notice about you at work is that your desk looks like a cyclone hit it, you may be a genius. As psychological scientist Kathleen Vohs points out, “Some of the most creative and prolific people are inveterate slobs.” Although other people may try to make you feel bad about your messy surroundings, the prevailing theory is that if you don’t spend time organizing and cleaning everything around you 13. You are consistently preoccupied with your thoughts. We’ve already covered the part about you being a quiet genius, but if people are always asking you, “What are you thinking?” this is the other half of the equation. 15. You wear the same clothes every day. This strategy works for likes of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, who often wear the same color shirts, ad nauseam. Even Albert Einstein only had three suits to his name in order to help him focus his mind on his genius ideas instead. 16. You are forgetful. So if you are a little absent-minded, makes you forgetful sometimes. A study published by the University of Toronto found that people who forget the trivial details of the day are far more likely to be focusing on the more important issues that solve the world’s problems. Radioactive lakes, rivers that can boil you alive, and lakes that turn things to stone – these all sound like something straight out of a sci-fi fantasy, but they’re real places on Earth – and today we’re going to take you there: • Number 7. Shanay-Timpishka The Boiling River Starting off our list as one of the most bizarre, scientifically questionable places on Earth is the Shanay-Timpishka, also referred to as the “Boiling River”. Take one step into this 4 mile long Amazonian River, and you will be boiled alive from the inside out! The River, located in Peru, reaches temperatures of over 91 degrees Celsius. Sure, waters of these temperatures are not unusual, but they are usually fed by a nearby volcano. The Shanay Timpishka River, however, doesn’t have a volcano in sight. So what does cause this phenomenon? Scientists believe that cracks in the fault lines allow the boiling hot water from underneath the Earth to heat the river, but this is really only just a theory. To date, the Shanay Timpishka River is a mystery – and one that should be avoided if you don’t want to turn into soup. • Number 6. Lake Karachay Moving on from rivers to lakes, we move onto Lake Karachay – the most polluted place on the planet. The problem stems from the pollution of the nearby nuclear facilities and the radioactive material that was dumped there by the Soviet Union. And if you think Chernobyl is bad, this place makes Chernobyl look like a great area to set up a family home! Just how polluted is the lake? In the 1990s, if you were to stand on the shores for one hour, you would be exposed to a radiation dose of over 600 roentgen – which would pretty much seal your fate. Today the site is covered mostly in concrete, but is still considered to be one of the most dangerous places on the planet. • Number 5. The Petrifying Well – We all know that witches can’t really turn men into frogs, but a well that can turn you into stone? Surely that can’t be real either – or can it? In Knaresborough, North Yorkshire lies a well where anything that it touches it turns into stone! What causes this unbelievable phenomenon? For years it was believed that the well was cursed by a witch. But scientists nowadays tribute the so called spell to a high mineral content within the water. • Number 4. The Blue Pond of Hokkaido Starting to think twice about swimming in strange waters? Don’t worry, not every water mass on our list is dangerous! Hence, the Blue Pond of Hokkaido, also referred to as the “Kool-Aid colored Lake”. Just one look at the lake, and there’s no doubt as to why it received it’s nickname, but where did the lake get it’s unique, electric blue shade that changes colors with the seasons? Scientists theorize that the unique colors of the water come from the high concentration of aluminum hydroxide that is in it. The water itself, of course, is clear, but when the particles reflect the sky, the water suddenly takes on it’s kool-aid color. And the best part? It’s safe for a visit! • Number 3. Kawah Ijen – Kool-aid blue water is one thing, and it might not be that difficult to believe, but blue lava? Yes, it’s real – and it comes from the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia. Built into the volcano is a sulphur mine where no flashlights are needed at night time. Rather, workers within the mine are guided by a glowing blue light that trickles down the walls like lava. But don’t be fooled – the name the “Blue Lava Volcano” is actually quite deceiving. Despite the name, the blue trickle isn’t actually lava, its sulphur. According to scientists, when the sulphuric gases within the mine heat up, they shoot blue flames up to 5 meters in the air. These gasses then condense into liquid sulphur, which then trickles down the walls giving the appearance of a neon blue lava. • Number 2. The Ringing Rocks of Pennsylvania – Okay, so you’ve just turned your teddy bear into stone, and now you hit it – what do you hear? Probably not the sound of a cymbal! But when you hit the Ringing Rocks of Pennsylvania, that is exactly the sound that you hear. And if that’s not strange enough, nobody knows why the rocks are where they are. Located in a rock field that occupies over 7 acres, the rocks have absolutely no reason to be there. Why do they make the sound of music? Nobody knows – not even science has solved this one yet! • Number 1. The Never Ending Light Storm Storm hunters will love this one, for in Western Venezuela, there is a storm that rarely ever ends. The lighting and thunder show starts around 7pm at night, and lasts until the wee hours of the morning. And though it doesn’t storm every night, the storms persists for over 300 days each year. And with each minute that passes, the storm produces an average of 28 strikes of lightning! There are several different theories as to why this show takes place, but the most common explanation focuses topography and atmospheric conditions of the area. Strangest items sent to outer space. • Number 7. Chair, burgers and beers For the cost of $60, you can purchase a 60-gram balloon that can lift an 2 lbs payload to the near-space. Over the years, people used balloons to send objects such as chair or beer to near space. Some do it for fun, some for experiment. • Number 6. Our Ashes: although not necessarily done across the globe, the Celestis Memorial Spaceflights are known to send the ashes of loved ones up into space by piggybacking them on either scientific or commercial satellite liftoffs. The ashes are placed in a sealed urn, attached to the host rocket, and launched so that they can be placed on the Celestis spacecraft. Each family member gets a keepsake DVD of the liftoff. This ceremonial tradition began back in 1997, when the ashes of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and , a psychology and psychedelic drug advocate, had their ashes launched into space. • Number 5. Firearms: presumably these were not to fight against enemy aliens or unknown wildlife but more for the survival of the space crew if they crashed or landed in the wilderness. The idea here was to have a pistol on every member of the crew in case of wolves or other predators attack. • Number 4. Luke’s Lightsaber: some items, like Luke’s Lightsaber, made it into space through an Official Flight Kit. These OFK’s are issued to members of the flight shuttle program, who want to store personal items for the flight. Each crew member would be allowed up to two pounds or one kilogram of paraphernalia. Common items include photos, posters, flags, and patches but one uncommon item was Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber prop. Apparently, George Lucas asked for it to be taken into space in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars: A New Hope film. • Number 2. Pocket Change: although the concept of taking items into space to elevate their monetary worth did not begin with the shuttle program, it did occur back in 1961. Gus Grissom became the second American in space, unfortunately, his mission was only a 15-minute suborbital flight which ended with a massive splash in the Atlantic Ocean. While he was waiting to be rescued, he realized that he had two rolls of 50 dimes and thirty, one dollar bills in his pocket, which he ditch as the extra weight was pulling him down as he tread water. When his capsule sank, with it went all the Mercury-head dimes. In 1999, the Liberty Bell 7 was rescued as were the coins that were left behind. • Number 1. Product Promotions: in 1969, the Apollo 11 landed on the moon and 94% of the American population had their television stations tuned in. This advertising exposure potential led many companies to create elaborate press kits with the flight’s logo emblazoned on them. For instance, the drink Tang became the drink for earth families and spacemen, and Omega watches became the watch worn into space. Coca-Cola wanted to get in on the action and so they spent $250,000 on a can that would dispense the soda in zero gravity. Beyond this, they even changed up their formula to make the drink easier to consume. When Pepsi saw Coca-Cola getting in on this, they spent $14 million to develop a space can of their own. During the 1985 launch of the Challenger, four cans of Coca-Cola went up into space. Background music: Youtube Audio Library.
22 Airline Travel Tips that Will Make Your Plane Travel Easier As flying on commercial airlines becomes more and more frustrating, using these airport travel tips and hacks will make it much easier for you to get to your destination and also help you arrive in a better frame of mind. 1. Don’t miss a plane because of security In case you didn’t know, TSA now offers an app that will tell you the wait time at many of the larger airports. 2. Keep the air vent above you turned on You may be chilly, but the air that comes from the vent is actually filtering out germs and blowing them away. The vent was originally designed to isolate and filter out cigarette smoke when you could smoke on planes. The circulating air will also keep your skin from becoming too dry. 3. Never join a security line with children in Once you reach the airport line for security, another tip is to get in the line with the business travelers, or the people wearing suits. 4. Frozen liquids are allowed through security. 5. Never get ice with your drink. If you do have a drink, don’t get the ice in it. While the obvious reason is that the ice cubes take up too much room in the little plastic cup, the real reason is that the ice cubes come from a water tank on the airplane 6. The blankets are biological weapons. Never, ever use the airplane blanket unless it comes right out of the sealed plastic bag. The folded blanket you find in the overhead bin or on the seat is used and unwashed. Talk about germs! 7. visit the airport lounge during a long layover If you do have an extended layover between two long flights, it might be to your benefit to buy a day pass to one of the airline lounges. Besides being comfortably situated away from the crowds, there are many other amenities to enjoy. This may include complimentary drinks and snacks, Wi-Fi, television, showers, computers with internet access, and more. 8. You’ll feel the turbulence the least over the wings. The first travel tip for booking the best seats is to pick the seats that are over the wing. Turbulence is felt least when you sit over the wings and if you pick the emergency row, you may even get more legroom. Turbulence is felt the most at the back of the plane. 9. If you travel as a couple, book a window and an aisle. Another tip to book better seats is that if you travel as a couple, book a middle seat or a one seat on the window and one on the aisle in the same row. 10. Take an Immune Supplement you will also be sharing the many germs circulating throughout the cabin. So, the first item to purchase from a pharmacy is an immune support supplement like Airborne or Nuun Immunity. 11. Wear sunblock exposure to radiation. A recent study found that pilots flying at 30,000 ft. for one hour get the same amount of exposure to radiation as someone who spends 20 minutes in a tanning bed. A different study determined that pilots were 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with malignant melanoma. 12. Wipe down your tray table. If you think you may get sick from the air you breathe on a flight, you are even more likely to pick up germs from the tray tables, armrests, bathroom fixtures, and other surfaces that thousands of strange people touch on these airplanes every day. 13. Dress in many thin layers. You don’t want to wear anything bulky when you go to the airport (even if it is cold) because you will regret lugging around anything heavy. Instead, dress in many layers of thin clothing, so that when you are sitting in an over-air-conditioned terminal you will be warm 14. Wear a hoodie Always make sure the one thing you are wearing is some sort of hoodie. It can also keep you warm if the need arises. 15. Belt with plastic buckle One more thing to wear to the airport is a belt with a plastic buckle. 16. Have a pen Another way to save time in airport lines, including customs, immigration and international trips, is to always have a pen. Filling out any form before everyone else will always put you at the front of the line! 17. Always go left at security 18. Have an empty coffee mug If you are really clever, there are a few other things you can do to bypass the TSA rules and avoid the high prices of the airport vendors. For example, while you can’t bring liquids through security, you can bring an empty coffee mug with a few tea bags or some instant coffee. 19. Exceeding “one personal item” rule Carry-on luggage is so restricted now, many people are getting creative when it comes to sneaking on a few more items that are over the limit. 20. Lost Luggage refund if the airline loses any of your real luggage, make sure to report a claim. The quietest place of any airport is the chapel. 23. Avoid alcohol Drinking alcohol while flying dehydrates you, and even though a drink may make the flight itself more pleasant, it will make you feel more exhausted when you arrive at your destination. Scientists Confirm Dogs Can Detect 8 Diseases You may be surprised to learn that dogs can detect life-threatening diseases in humans. #1. Dogs can tell when you have cancer dogs can detect breast cancer, prostate cancer, and even bladder cancer. Simply by sniffing someone’s body. A study conducted at the University of California Davis has shown that dogs can detect Cancer-affected tissues out of many samples. Cancer-affected cells have a unique odor that doesn t exist in healthy cells. While humans have about 5 million scent receptors, dogs can have up to 250 million There s an organization in the United Kingdom called Medical Detection Dogs in which dogs are trained to find the odor of cancer in samples such as breath, urine, and swabs. The other interesting piece of evidence comes from a story in the Canada Free Press. Apparently, a woman’s dog tried to bite off a mole located on her leg. It turned out to be malignant melanoma. A 2019 study published in Experimental Biology found that dogs can consistently pick out blood samples from confirmed cancer patients with a 99% accuracy. #2. Dogs can detect low blood sugar For diabetics, this can be a lifesaver. The organization - Dogs4Diabetics - trains dogs extensively to alert owners when their blood sugar is low. The science behind it comes from the fact that dogs can detect isoprene. Isoprene is a chemical in human breath. It rises in volume when a person’s blood sugar drops. Medical News Today reports a dog can smell this - and when trained - can tell their owner that they need to test their blood sugar. In 2013, the Public Library of Science published a study that these dogs significantly improved the life of insulin-dependent diabetics. #3. Dogs can tell when you are about to have a migraine. Psychology Today conducted a study with over 1,000 migraine sufferers - who were also dog owners. What they found was the 54 percent of the dog owners noticed a change in the behavior of their dogs - about one or two hours before the migraine set in. Believe it or not, there are migraine-alert-service dogs. If they alert you on time, it can mean the difference between suffering a migraine for three days - and being able to manage it successfully. How do they do it? Like every other medical condition, dogs can sniff it out. This is because if you are on your way to a migraine, your serotonin spikes. Dogs can smell this and they alert you with a whine. #4. Dogs can sniff out malaria. Malaria may not be common everywhere, but in the countries where it still exists, it can be deadly. Especially for children. But once again, it’s our trained and sniffing service dogs to the rescue. Recent research proves that dogs can accurately tell if someone has malaria – simply by smelling their socks. Even if someone is not showing any symptoms, the dog knows well ahead of time when someone has the disease. #5. Dogs understand fear and stress. You see, dogs can be trained to smell cortisol levels in humans. Cortisol is the hormone commonly known as the “stress hormone.” So when your cortisol levels rise, dogs can smell it. They can also be trained to help people with higher than normal stress levels. One cortisol-sniffing dog at the Calais school for autistic children sniffs the students to see if their cortisol levels are higher than any of the other students. Since autistic children can’t tell someone when they are upset, the dog does the talking for them. #6. Dogs can be trained to help those who suffer from narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a dangerous condition. This when a person can fall asleep instantly – even while they are standing up. In this case, narcolepsy service dogs can detect when an attack is coming on - by a change in the smell of your sweat. This was proven in a 2013 scientific study published in National Institutes of Health. In the study, trained narcoleptic service dogs recognized 11 out of 12 patients with narcolepsy by smelling their sweat samples. In this case, a trained service dog can alert their owner when they are about to have an episode, based on the biochemical changes in their body. This can save a person who suffers from narcolepsy from experiencing a serious injury. #7. Dogs can sniff out Parkinson’s disease In England, a super-sniffing dog noticed a change in his owner’s odor six years before he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, a nervous system disorder that affects movement. This led to scientific research at Manchester University - in an attempt to train other dogs to detect Parkinson’s disease before the classic symptoms emerged. Since 2016, an organization called Parkinson s Alert Dogs has been training canines to recognize the smell of Parkinson s disease. #8. Dogs can sense the onset of a seizure Studies have shown that about ninety percent of service dogs develop the ability on their own to sense a seizure. So after getting to know their owner’s behavior - these dogs know when a seizure is about to happen.

5 Reasons Why Cats Like Sleeping on Your Bed For those who do let their cats sleep with them, you are probably wondering why they love it so much and almost insist on it every night. Well, here are 5 reasons why your cat sleeps on your bed. #1. Your body heat is alluring. Your cat is always going to curl up in the warmest of places in the house. Whether this is newly washed laundry that has come out of the dryer or is on the windowsill where the sunbeams hit. This is primarily because our cats have an average body heat of 99.5-102.5 Fahrenheit, so when the surrounding temperature in the environment is colder than this, they are going to look for a nice warm area to maintain their temperature. With this said, the easiest way to do that is to absorb your body heat without much effort. If you don’t have warm window ledges, a space heater, or warm laundry sitting around, they are going to look to you to stay warm. This is also why cats love to cuddle with you more during those winter months. #2. You make them feel safe and secure. Cats will always remain alert, even when they are sleeping. They even have specific sleep “modes” that allow them to stay alert while they doze. Ever seen your cat sleeping with one eye open? Yeah, that’s them getting their naptime in while still being on watch for predators or danger. Because cats need to sleep for so long during the day, they may prefer to actually cuddle up with you so that they can lower their guard down and get a restful sleep in. #3. Cats are extremely territorial. While you know that your bed is your bed, your cat may think it is theirs and they are simply just letting you sleep with them. This may seem a bit like a negative thing, but it all honesty, it means that they have enough trust in you and so they let you sleep by their side. Ever wonder why your cat cuddles into almost everything in the house? That’s them marking their territory and your bed is no exception. #4. Comfort above all. As you already know, all of those blankets, soft sheets, and fluffy pillows make for an extremely comfortable place to lie down. Your cat knows and understands this too and wants in on the comfort that your bed offers. Cats tend to sleep between thirteen and sixteen hours a day, so they’ve tried out all of the most comfortable spots in the house, and they are going to agree with you that your bedroom is the coziest. #5. They are displaying their love for you! We often think that our cats don’t love us nearly as much as our dogs do, but that’s simply not true. While they can be very independent, they do miss you when you are gone from home for a long period of time and will want to cuddle with you when you get back. Sleeping with you in your bed at night, is one way that your cat may try to show their affection towards you. Your cat will try to keep you warm and safe, and may go as far as sleeping on you, butting their head into you, and licking you. Ever woken up with your cat above your head on your pillow? That’s love. But Should You Allow Your Cat to Sleep with You? It is perfectly all right to allow your cat to sleep beside you in bed at night, permitting that you do not have any allergies to your cat’s hair or dander, and they have been de-wormed and vaccinated. If your cat is an outdoor cat, you may not want to let them up beside you as they can track pests, dirt, and other unsavory things into the bedroom.
While humans do eat a lot of weird food items, one thing we never touch is fecal matter. This is because not only are we naturally grossed out by it, but also because we know that poop contains a lot of nasty pathogens that can get us really sick. However, for many animals, feces is actually quite a common item on their sustenance menu. While we may view poop as dangerous, it’s not as scary as we think. While eating poop from sick people can be an issue as it can contain viruses, parasites, and bacteria, healthy poop often contains harmless bacteria, a lot of water, some undigested food, some dead cells, and some metabolic waste. No harmful viruses, bacteria, or parasites. This is why a lot of poison control centers don’t actually consider the accidental ingestion of poop, whether it is animal or human, to be life threatening. Rather, they consider it minimally toxic. Some doctors even prescribe poop pills to those who have hard time to combat gut infections, as poop can be extremely nutritious and help reset the gut bacteria to healthy levels. The digestive process cannot possibly suck out every single nutrient from your food, so your poop is going to contain some percentage of nutrition. For instance, herbivores have a third of their digested food nutrients left in their poop. This is why flies and dung beetles can subsist entirely on the nutrients of poop from the animals they follow around. Some Animals Can Live Off of Poop Entirely! One of the reasons why pigsties are generally considered very filthy is because for thousands of years, humans actually built toilets over them and fed the pigs their poop. This is because pigs can actually get most of their nutrition intake from human fecal matter. Dogs on the other hand, may scarf down any poop they come across, but some will actually use their keen sense of smell to only find fresh poop. More than this, some dogs will only sniff out poop that has enzymes and vitamins that their body is craving. Neat, eh!? Some animals will even extract nutrients from their poop in order to meet their dietary needs. Gorillas for example, will feed on the Dialium Tree seeds which are very hard. While their gut bacteria can soften these seeds up, their gut finds it hard to actually extract their nutrients in the first pass. So, gorillas will actually eat their own excrement when they are having a hard time finding food. Another animal that can extract nutrients from their excrement are the Southern Cassowary who eats Cassowary plums. These plums are fairly large in size and the Southern Cassowary has a very short digestive system, so they end up passing chunks of the fruit through their poop. The Cassowary simply turns around, picks out these chunks, and eats them again to get the nutrients. Some Animals Must Eat Their Own Poop for Survival Reasons For some animals, eating their own poop is a must. For instance, rabbits must eat their own poop because they have very short digestive systems. A cow, who has a long, complex, digestive tract doesn’t have to eat their poop because the microbes have enough time to break down the hard plant cells. A rabbit’s microbes don’t have enough time and so, they poop out a soft mucus covered cluster of partially digested food and microbes. This “package” is then eaten by the rabbit, which recovers the nutrients that were not digested in the first pass. Once this is done, the rabbit will poop out pellets. Baby koalas must also eat poop in order to survive, but specifically, their mother’s poop. This is because koala babies are not born with the specific bacteria needed to break down their diet of eucalyptus leaves which are heavily toxic and fibrous. So instead, the baby eats pap, which is a soft green poop that the mother excretes. It is full of bacteria and nutrients that gives the baby the required microbes to digest the eucalyptus leaves.
10 Tragic Facts About Laika Laika was a stray dog in Russia. She was selected to be sent into outer space. The aim was to learn how long a dog can last in space. With a rapid breath and pounding heart, Laika rode a rocket called Sputnik 2 into Earth Orbit on November 3rd, 1957. Frightened, overheated, and cramped, she gave her life for Soviet Union involuntarily. This was a suicide mission because the satellite was not designed to bring her back to earth. Here are the top 10 tragic facts about Laika and her story. #1. She Had No Home. Laika was found on the streets of Moscow, a stray that like any other dog, just wanted a warm home, a steady supply of food, and perhaps some love. Unfortunately, strays were sought out by the Soviet Union for their space program, as dogs were easy to train and therefore, easier to prepare for space missions. The reasoning behind this was that stray mutts had already endured a hard life of little to no food, poor environmental conditions, and physical ailments, and as such, this would make them tough enough to handle what space could throw at them. Interestingly enough, Laika was not the first dog to head up into orbit, as the Soviets did send Albina, who made it halfway up into orbit and back safely. If Laika didn’t pass training, Albina would replace her. Another dog, Mushka, was used to test the life support system that would be given to Laika during her trip, but unfortunately, the space program was too hard for her and she eventually became so terrified that she refused to eat. All of these dogs were strays and had no home but the empty streets. #2. Laika Was Destined to Die and They Knew It. The Sputnik 2 was not built to withstand coming back down into Earth’s atmosphere and therefore, could not re-enter the atmosphere safely. The scientists within the Soviet space program knew that Laika would not be making the trip home and was only expected to spend a few days alive up in space. This sparked outrage amongst international press, as campaigns cropped up in an attempt to stop the mission from going forward as the mission was deemed as animal cruelty. The Soviets did not understand why everyone was so outraged, as they were sending her up into space for the sake of “humanity” and they even reiterated that Soviets love dogs. While Albina was the first choice for the mission, she was kept back as she had already “done her job” and Laika was sent instead, because they knew she was going to die. #3. They Rushed the Mission. The original plan had Laika coming home and the Soviets even told press outlets that she would be comfortable, would have everything she needed to survive, and would return home safely. Sadly, the original plan was changed, as Nikita Khrushchev wanted the satellite launch to be used in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution. To put it bluntly, the entire Sputnik 2 launch was used as a propaganda piece and in order for the satellite to be ready in time, it was to be rushed. So, the original plan was scrapped, and scientists had to come up with a spacecraft capable of sending Laika into orbit within four weeks, which meant that all traditional designs of rocket technology were thrown out and with it, Laika’s safe return home. #4. Cramped Training and Small Spaces. Sputnik 2 was a tiny satellite, no bigger than a washing machine. This meant that Laika would not be able to turn around and would only be able to sit and lie down, facing in one direction. To get Laika ready for the tight space that was Sputnik 2, she was transitioned through a series of smaller and smaller cages. She would be left for up to twenty days at a time in a small cage, then pulled out and immediately placed into an even smaller one. A side effect of this was that the dogs who were being trained in this way would refuse to defecate and would then become constipated which required the use of laxatives. Eventually the dogs would adapt, but only because they were forced to stay in these cages until they knew nothing else. #5. Laika Had One Good Day with a Scientist’s Family. Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky had been working extremely closely with Laika during the last four weeks of the training leading up to the satellite launch. Because he was the one who had plucked her off the streets, trained her, and chose her to go up into space, he wanted to do something nice for her on the day before her journey. So, he brought her back to his home to let her experience what life would have been like as a domesticated dog. His family played with her, fed her, and loved her. On launch day, Dr. Vladimor Yazdovsky’s family came to the launch site and said their goodbyes to Laika, knowing that she would not come home. #6. A Terrifying Experience for Laika. On launch day, Laika was placed in the rocket that would send her up into space, but there was a malfunction that needed to be repaired.
If you are interested in methods of torture, you may be curious about the 8 most terrifying execution methods in the history of mankind. If you think you know what pain is, just enjoy our list of some of the worst punishments you could ever imagine. #1. Rats. Rat torture was first recorded in the 17th century under Dutch leaders who used it against prisoners who threatened to overthrow the Dutch government. if you disobeyed the government, you were tied down to a wooden table. You would have a cage with a rat in it strapped to your abdomen. The cage would be heated, but not to your dissatisfaction. It would be the rat who would panic. In its fear to get away from a heated cage, it would chew through your skin to seek refuge from its tormenter. You, though, would have a rat chewing through your stomach and nesting in your abdomen. #2. Death by Boiling Oil Putting a murderer that everyone hates into a cauldron of boiling oil, water, or even tar was a crowd favorite in the Middle Ages. It was the most popular form of capital punishment in the year 1531, in England, when King Henry the 8th signed it into law. The punishment was designed to stop people from poisoning both royalty and the clergy officials of Great Britain. Which brings us to one of the messiest and most terrifying punishments on our countdown. #3. The Iron Maiden If you can imagine it, the iron maiden is a sarcophagus-looking cabinet with a hinged lid. If someone locked you up in it. And a claustrophobic would be terrified. Enough to be to experience one of the most terrifying punishments in the history of mankind. The interior of the door on an iron maiden is jam-packed with metal spikes. And as the name suggests, the cabinet is made of iron. So there is no escaping once the lid is closed. And the multiple spikes kill you. Most terrifyingly. The iron maiden was used in the 19th century as a torture device and also for executions. You can still view them in museums around the world. #4. The Guillotine Ironically, the guillotine is one of the most deceptively terrifying punishments on our countdown. This is because - with the guillotine - your death will be quick, but it will be public and humiliating. You would be a royal stripped down for the public to see you at your worst. The public, who will be awaiting your death as sure as you are trying to avoid it. It was Dr. Guillotin who invented this device. To make for quick deaths of those who committed high treason against the French government. He was a doctor who thought it would be a humane way of executing criminals, but it turned out to be the opposite. In 1789, he wanted the guillotine to be a humanitarian effort. Who knew the French revolution was right around the corner? Not King Louis the 16th or Marie Antoinette. Both beheaded by Guillotine. #5. Burning at the Stake Burning at the stake is really a form of capital punishment and one of the most terrifying of ancient execution methods. Because when you get tied to a stake and the villagers start a bonfire, you will burn to death while you are still alive. Treason is one of the crimes you can be burned for, but you could also have been burned at the stake for heresy. Heresy used to mean that you thought differently from established society. And that is to be suspected of practicing witchcraft. Or be physic. Technically speaking though, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for heresy in Rouen France. No one thought she had any visions that were credible. From approximately 1580 to 1630 - many people, mainly women, were burned at the stake for the suspected practice of witchcraft. #6. Live Burial As its name implies, the victim could be buried up to his neck letting any animals or insects kill him slowly. In another form of live burial, the victim would be left in coffin to suffocate or else were provided with an air tube and left to die of dehydration and the extreme fear of being buried alive. #7. Sawing if you guessed correctly, sawing a man in half starts at the crotch and goes all the way up to their head. Although, there weren’t any chainsaws back then. Just a manual saw and a guy who was held down and actually sawed in half. The first documented cases of sawing are around 451 B.C. in Rome, It was mainly Caligula who popularized the practice. This was at the height of his popularity. #8. Drawn and Quartered So if you lived in England, around about 1283, a law was enacted to allow local authorities to use a horse to drag you through the streets. And then disembowel you and pull your limbs off. In public - and with the law to back them up. This is capital punishment at its finest. Then you could tie them to a horse, drag them to the gallows, and hang them. Because you were still allowed to disembowel them, cut off their head, and quarter them by tearing off their limbs. This was sometimes done by tying the offender’s limbs to other horses. The horses were then driven in the opposite direction.
In this video, we’ll look at 21 of the world’s most expensive cat breeds. British Shorthair Cat The British Shorthair has a distinctively stocky body, dense coat, and broad face. The most familiar color variant is the "British Blue," a solid grey-blue coat. Because they have no fur, they lose more body heat than coated cats; this makes them warm to the touch, and prone to finding warm places. They cost about $2000. Toyger This large breed of cat with a striped orange and black coat looks much like a miniature version of a tiger. Toygers are outgoing, friendly, and energetic. American Curl American Curl has fluffy, curled-back ears that resemble small horns. These cats are sociable and affectionate. Persian Persian cat originates from Iran, formerly known as Persia. These cats have long hair, short muzzle and round face. Persian cat is the second most popular cat breed in North America. Bengal Cat the Bengal cat is roughly between $1,500 to $5,000. The first available breed representatives came about in the 1970’s in the USA, and were intended to help study leukemia. Khao Manee The earliest references to this stunning breed can be found in the Cat Book Poems (1350s). In ancient times, Khao Manee cats lived only with the royal families and were a symbol of wealth. Chausie The chausie is one of the rarest known cat breeds. It was developed from the crossing of a jungle and a domestic cat. These cats have short hair, large ears, and are very friendly. Caracal The Caracal is a breed on the verge of extinction. It was originally a breed of wild predator, but has become an exclusive and expensive pet. Savannah Cat With a striking resemblance to the safari cat, savannah cats cost a heap more. The breed was developed by crossbreeding an African Serval and a domestic cat. What sets it apart from the safari cat is its ears, which are even larger and more prominent. Ashera The most exotic cat in the world is the Ashera. These giant kitties are a product of the crossbreeding between Asian leopard cats, African servals, and a domestic cat. They have short hair, a mixture of spots and stripes, and a friendly nature. Ashera is hypoallergenic.

In this video, we will discuss 10 ways that cats show their love. Prolonged eye contact and slow blinking. You’ve probably noticed your cat staring intently into your eyes at one point or another - don’t worry! your kitty is showing you how much they love you! Prolonged eye contact in combination with slow, precise blinking is equal to the love shown by an adoring human partner who gazes into your eyes before a kiss or during intimate moments. To respond, you can always blink slowly back. Cats appreciate it because they can easily decipher the meaning behind a slow, meaningful blink and intense gaze. Cheek rubbing. If you’ve ever been giving your cat some friendly ear scratches and had them start to rub their cheek against your leg, you’ve been exposed to this feline love language. Your cat rubbing its cheeks against you is a way for your cat to mark its territory - you! Your cat might also rub its cheeks against furniture and other objects within the home. This action promotes the excretion of oils from your cat’s facial glands, which it then transfers to the things it rubs against. Other cats within the area can smell this oil and know to stay away. Head-butting Many cat owners consider the ever-popular head butting that cats do to be an action done out of impatience or jealousy. In all reality, though, it’s not usually either of those things. When a cat rams its head against your arm, side, leg, or any other body part, it’s a sign of friendship and trust. As mentioned, cats’ heads have oil glands and oil can be released by headbutting the same way that it can be by cheek rubbing. Cats with strong personalities, though, could sometimes use headbutting as a way to get attention. This is especially true if, the first time they do it, their human takes it as a clue for a good back scratch. Bringing you gifts. Toddlers are known for bringing their loving caregivers everything they find that they deem to be cool, exciting, or worthy of showing off. Did you know that cats do this, too? Much like human children, our feline children are prone to bringing us “gifts” - that is, offerings such as favorite toys, birds, and mice. Nice, right? Well, maybe not. But it does mean that your cat has fond feelings for you, so accept their gift with a smile and try not to be too upset upon receiving a slobbery ball of fur or feathers. Kneading. Your cat is kneading to show affection. As kittens, cats will knead their mother’s breast as well as litter mates in order to gain comfort. So, when your cat kneads you, it’s being taken back to a happy time and is very, very comfortable with you. If your cat’s nails are sharp, you can make kneading more bearable by trimming the nails or by placing a blanket or soft cloth on your leg before the kneading begins. Nibbling. One easy way to gauge how much your cat loves you is by its tendency to nibble. Does your cat nibble your fingers or hands when you touch their face? If so, your cat most likely loves you to bits! Keep in mind, though, that cats can bite but rest assured that you’ll know when your cat bites you out of aggression versus when it gives you a love nibble. If your cat nibbles or nips a little too hard while playing with you, it’s probably just an accident as the act of playing alone is a sign of love. Curling their tail. The way a cat feels can often be observed through what its tail is doing. Like humans who have facial expressions, cats express their emotions through the use of their tails. Cats who are scared will puff up and hold their tails stick-straight, while those who have curled the tips of their tails are showing their undying love and affection for you. In addition, cats who lazily swish their tails are comfortable around you and cats who wrap their tail around your arm or leg are head over heels in love. Exposing their tummy. All animals have an instinct to protect their tummy. This includes cats. So when your furry friend rolls over and shows you its tummy? That’s when you know you’re considered to be part of your cat’s family. Some cats might let you rub their tummy once they do this, but it’s important to know your cat because some cats still aren’t fond of tummy rubs even if they leave the area wide open. Following you. If every time you turn around, your cat is somewhere within reach, you’ve got a cat who enjoys following you. Many cats enjoy doing this, as their goal is stay near you because they love you. Cats who practice this behavior might follow you into the kitchen, the bedroom, the bathroom, and even outside if you let them. Sleeping on Your Things Cats have a particular habit of sleeping on their beloved human companions whenever they see fit. Often, this is when their human is trying to do work on a laptop, read a book, or do something else that requires their attention and for them to sit still. Alternatively, your cat might choose to sleep on your bed with you. This is a sure sign of companionship.
Incredible Animation Shows a Comparison of Animals Speed For some reason, the idea that cheetahs are the world’s fastest animal has turned into fact through years of childhood repetition. But not all great qualities in the animal kingdom are so easily settled as height and weight. In fact, determining the worlds’ fastest animal is much more complicated than you might think. Cheetahs can reach a speed of 70 miles per hour. That’s about three times faster than the top running speed of a human which is 27 miles per hour. Native to the world s colder oceans, the Sailfish is iconic thanks to the long, sail-like fin that runs the length of its back. These blue-gray fish swim up to 70 miles per hour, bringing it neck to neck with the cheetah in the race to be the fastest. Their speed is about two times the speed of sharks, and three times the top speed of the Titanic. Looking at the everyday pigeon, you wouldn t assume that they re very special. However, they are surprisingly fast flyers! Pigeons can reach top speeds of 76 miles per hour, making them slightly faster than cheetahs but not the fastest by any means. When it comes to level flight speeds, the Gray-headed Albatross takes the cake. These simple gray birds are able to reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. They are seabirds who breed and live on islands within the Southern Ocean. The Black Marlin tops the cheetah in speed by almost 12 miles per hour. It can swim at a speed of 80 miles per hour, which, in perspective, is crazy fast as it’s faster than you’re allowed to drive on the freeway! This speedy fish can be observed in the tropical areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Spur-Winged Goose is the world’s largest goose, but it doesn’t let its size hinder it! Nope, this large bird flies at a top speed of 88 miles per hour. In addition, the spur-winged goose, despite being related to both geese and shelducks, is unique enough to have its own subfamily. Horseflies - specifically the male variety- are pretty fast. These little insects fly as fast as 90 miles per hour, leaving the Spur-Winged goose in their rear-view mirrors so to speak. Though they aren’t an animal or object, their speed puts them on this list without hesitation. Moving approximately 5 miles per hour faster than the male horsefly, the Frigate Bird can reach an impressive speed of 95 miles per hour. These birds are known for being able to stay aloft for up to two months without touching down on land or water. They can eat and sleep on the wing. Mexican Free-Tailed Bats are native to the Americas, with very few locations housing them in abundance. When flying, they can reach speeds of 100 miles per hour, making them the fastest bat ever recorded. The Eurasian Hobby is tied with the Mexican free-tailed bat, flying at a speed of 100 miles per hour. These birds are made to maintain their speed over long distances. Another shockingly fast bird, the White Throated Needletail comes in at 107 miles per hour. It is the second fastest bird known to date. The Golden Eagle has an average flight speed of 120 miles per hour, you may think it is the fastest on our list, but the peregrine falcon flies twice as fast at a speed of 240 miles per hour. That’s over three times the speed of the cheetah, and half the cruising speed of a passenger aircraft. Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world and has the fastest visual processing speed of any animal. So if we’re done shaming the cheetah, can we just crown the Peregrine Falcon for the world’s fastest animal? Well, it all depends on how you think about speed. While some creatures are fast all the time, others see their speeds peak when they accelerate to reach their top cruising or striking speed. For example, the mantis shrimp uses a specially designed hammer-like appendage that is spring-loaded, striking its target within only 3 milliseconds! In other words, by the time a human blinks once, the mantis shrimp could have struck its unfortunate victim 90 times. Jellyfish boasts an even faster acceleration. It puts the mantis shrimp to shame when it comes to how quickly it can strike. These creatures inject their harpoons into their target at speeds that are comparable to bullets flying out of a gun. These harpoons can launch within 700 nanoseconds and, if that wasn’t impressive enough, they accelerate at speeds that top the acceleration of the force of gravity.
In this video, we ll talk about the top 18 common mistakes dog owners make. Giving Bones to Your Dog Bones are a good source of nutrients and chewing stimulates saliva enzymes, helps treat plaque buildup on teeth, and prevent gum disease in your dog. However, many vets believe it just isn’t worth the risk of serious injuries to give your dog a bone. Bones can break and splinter into tiny, sharp pieces that can cut your dog’s mouth, throat or digestive organs. Hot summer walks In hot summer days, the pavement is hot enough to cause burns, tissue damage, and potentially to scar your dog’s sensitive paws after just one minute of contact. Ingredients matter Improper feeding can lead to obesity, malnutrition and many health issues. Always monitor the calories in your chosen pet food and adhere to the suggested serving sizes. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, over 50% of dogs and cats in the US are obese or overweight. Neglecting breed-specific characteristics Every dog breed has different needs. Climatic conditions, physical exercise, room or space availability, and grooming requirements are some of the things to be considered when caring for your dog. And remember, before actually getting a dog, one should understand what breed suits your lifestyle best. Risking a Lost Dog Many dogs are lost every day. Make sure to add an identification tag to your dog’s collar. And remember, microchipping makes it even easier to identify lost dogs whose tags or collars may have been cut off. Taking puppies to dog parks. Taking young puppies to dog parks is a bad idea. First of all, young puppies don’t have all the vaccinations, which means they are susceptible to diseases and infections. Secondly, other dogs can be aggressive towards your puppy. Toxic Flea Repellents Many of the pharmaceutical pest repellents are dangerous for animals. Make sure to use pest control sprays that are safe for pets and don’t contain toxic chemicals. Not adjusting their collar Dogs grow and put on weight. It’s important to change the collar size from time to time. Early Exposure Socializing a dog is one of the most important things a dog owner can do, especially with a puppy! The more people and animals that your pooch is exposed to early on in their life, the better. It helps to lessen fears and have a well-adjusted happy dog. Thinking that all human food is good for dogs Some pet owners think that dogs instincts guide them about what food is safe for them. But this is not true. Many human foods, such as vegetables and fruits, can wreak havoc on a dog’s body, causing severe health problems. Neglecting Their Dental Hygiene and Grooming Like humans, dogs need regular dental care. Their teeth are often home to hundreds of bacteria and need to be brushed just like yours do. Grooming helps maintain a healthy coat and prevents matting or skin diseases. And remember, regular nail trims help reinforce healthy posture and foot structure, and reduces the risk of infection. If your dog gets sick and you don’t have any insurance, the costs are likely to be much higher than you anticipated. Make sure to get your pet insured before it is too late. Dogs age quickly, sometimes 10 times faster than humans, and yearly exams can help to detect problems that can be treated early. Not Offering Enough Exercise and Activity Lack of exercise and activity can lead to behavioral issues and health problems. The more you play and exercise your pup, the less chewing, jumping and barking you will get. But remember, short-nosed breeds like pugs and bulldogs have respiratory issues and are not capable of running long distances. Leaving dogs alone in the car It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation. Dogs don’t sweat and have a hard time adjusting to heat than humans. Putting flowers on the table Some plants or flowers are toxic to dogs. The most toxic plants are Ivy, lilies, chrysanthemums, tomato plants, and tulips. Using harsh cleaning products Many cleaning products used in our homes are toxic to dogs. Dogs lick their paws and ingest those toxins. Any product that contains bleach or ammonia is hazardous to animals. Thinking they’ll grow out of it Dogs do not grow out of a bad behavior. If you don’t stop unwanted behaviors, they will get worse. Using the Wrong Shampoo Many dog shampoos that look natural often still contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs. Using a human shampoo on dogs can disrupt their skin composition, leaving your pup vulnerable to viruses, bacteria and parasites. Not being on the Same Page If you live with other people, make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to expectations and training of your dog. If your pup is not allowed on the couch, everyone should discourage him from doing so. Not cleaning their feet after walks A quick wipe of dog s paws is important to clean dirt, bacteria, skin irritants or harmful chemicals from the streets.
Cats VS Dogs: Lifestyle Differences You may be a dog person – or you may be a cat person. You might also be an animal lover who has both a cat and a dog. But whether you are around cats or dogs, you will notice that the way a dog owner sees their life is completely different from the way a cat owner sees theirs. Let’s start with the dinner time. While a dog may wolf down any kind of dog food you bring them, a cat will not. You can try to buy your cat every flavor of wet or dry food, but once they are tired of eating it, they will simply walk away. And they won’t tell you why. Most likely, in the morning, your cat will have crawled into bed with you to snuggle under the covers - or sleep on top of your head. Cats do this because they crave heat. And since you lose most of your body heat through the top of your head, don’t be surprised if your cat curls up there to absorb that extra warmth! On the other hand, your dog will probably sleep at the foot of your bed. But in the morning, they will want to go for a walk. There’s a big difference between washing cats and washing dogs. Although it may be hard to believe, cats clean themselves quite efficiently. The surface of their tongue has tiny spines, called papillae, which act as a natural brush that removes extra fur, oils, and debris. This is why they sometimes cough up hairballs. Cats rarely need to be washed, but dogs are a different story. While they may lick themselves sometimes, they can’t wash on their own. You can do it yourself, but it’s much better to take your dogs to a pet groomer to have their claws clipped and their fur washed. If you do try to do it yourself, make sure to use dog shampoo and lukewarm water. As well, dogs should be toweled off well and kept inside until they are dry. if dogs get too wet, they will shake off the extra water as an instinct to dry themselves faster. Dogs and cats will also try to please you in the best way they know. A cat will try to impress you by killing a real mouse and bringing it to you as gift. At the same time, a dog will dig holes in the yard to bury bones for future nourishment. They will also chase squirrels away to protect your property. Now let’s talk about how your pets spend the day when you are at work. Cats spend about 75% of their time sleeping during the day. On the other hand, you may find that your dog has chewed up a pair of shoes. They do it because your shoes have your scent on them. Your dog chews on your shoes because it not only relieves their stress but also releases endorphins that make them feel better when you aren’t at home. They may also tear up furtitures. And keep in mind, your dogs and cats don’t know when you are coming home. So they can become anxiety-ridden just like anyone else. It’s the same reason a cat purrs when they jump up on your lap. Or on your laptop. So while a dog is a little more respectful of your space when you are working at home, a cat might just jump up and sit on your laptop to get your attention. That is - when they feel like it. Now let’s talk about how dogs and cats greet you when you come home. While both pets have a sensitive sense of hearing and a profound sense of smell, cats and dogs are very different creatures. So while a dog will jump up to greet you because they are glad to see you at home, a cat is a little bit more standoffish. They’ll greet you or any of your guests when they get in the right mood. Speaking of the weekend, this is also playtime for cats and dogs. And while you can take your dog outside to chase a ball, your cat may play on its own. You can even buy a cat an expensive toy, but cats are more likely to play with a small stuffed mouse - or a paper bag that is left on the floor. Dogs are naturally outside animals. They love to be out playing and walking. This is why dog parks were invented. Cats? Not so much. They like to be indoors and watch the world from a window view. Get a leash for a dog so they can enjoy the great outdoors. And if you have a cat, install a window ledge. This will let them bask in the sun while they enjoy the view. Cats and dogs both shed a healthy amount of hair, but they take care of it differently. While a cat will ingest a fair amount of their hair when they groom, a dog just sheds. So be prepared for a cat to cough up the occasional hairball. It’s perfectly natural. However, it is wise to invest in a pet-friendly hairbrush. Both cats and dogs hate the sound of the vacuum, but if you brush them once a week, you will have much less hair on your couch and carpets. While a dog is very trainable, a cat does not obey commands so easily. Dogs are constantly fed treats to obey commands. You can convince your dog to do almost anything with some food. Cats, on the other hand, are thankful for the treats, but they are much more likely to purr and rub up against your leg than they are to follow your instructions afterward.

How do animals prefer to be petted? It’s a question that has stumped many pet owners for centuries, but science now has an answer. In this video, we’ll discuss exactly where and how your pet prefer to be stroked, and where they would rather you keep your hands off. Part I. How to pet a cat Cats see petting as akin to grooming or licking, which happens between two friendly felines. Most cats prefer being touched around the regions where their facial scent glands are located. This includes the base of their ears, under their chin, and around their cheeks. This kind of petting mimics the kind of grooming cats do by licking one another. A study published in 2015 in the journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science found that cats show more positive behavioral responses—like purring or kneading—when they are pet between the eyes and ears. And they display more negative responses—like hissing, swatting or swishing their tails—when they are pet around their tummy, back and base of their tail. Yes, that’s right. Cats don’t actually enjoy being stroked at the base of their tail -- at least, that was the case for most of the 54 cats in this study. Researchers believe that a cat’s tail area is an erogenous zone, and petting this part of their body may overstimulate them. The common mistake that we humans make when it comes to meeting a new cat is that we assert our touch on top of them. Cats need plenty personal space, and if you go up to the cat, corner them, and try to pet them to win them over, chances are they will move away. The key to success is to provide the cat with as much choice and control as possible during interactions. Let them be on their terms. Instead of insisting them to accept your touch, gently offer your non-threatening fingertip at their nose level. And always let the cat make the first move. Research has shown that human interactions with cats last longer when the cat, rather than the human, initiates them. Part II. How to pet a dog A study published in Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that dogs show more signs of stress—like yawning, freezing, lip licking, or elevated heart rates—when they are pet on the head, muzzle, shoulders or paws. Petting on the chest however, is associated with a decrease of heart rate, and is more calming to a dog. Nevertheless, many dogs are comfortable with any types of interactions—even with strangers—because they’re used to being around people. New research has revealed that dogs show more interest in petting when it is accompanied with praise. If you want to make your dog feel EXTRA good when petting them, talk to them while you stroke them. Tell them how much you love them and how good of a dog they are. So talking to your dog using your dog voice while petting them, is a great way to show them you love them. Dogs get a secure feeling when you pet them. It reduces their heart rate, lowers their blood pressure, and increases a bonding hormone in them called Oxytocin. It helps them know that you still love them and care for them. And you have probably noticed that when you scratch your dog’s belly, they start kicking their back leg. This movement is an involuntary reaction called scratch reflex. It’s much like the knee-jerk reflex that occurs when the doctor taps below your knee. Although it may seem funny to see your dog jerking their back leg, this involuntary kicking response may be irritating to them. Some people think that rubbing this spot on a dog s belly is what they want, but in most cases, dogs would prefer to lie next to you and receive gentle touches on the chest instead. The best way to initiate contact with a new dog is to hold your hand out flat and let the dog sniff it. Also keep an eye on the tail – if it is lowered or tucked between the legs, they are not very happy. On the contrary, if the dog is leaning against you, it’s a good sign they are enjoying it. Part III. How to pet a rabbit In the wild, rabbits groom each other to keep each other clean, comfort their friends, and show they care about one another. Rabbits see petting as akin to grooming, which happens between two friendly bunnies. The best places to pet rabbits are their forehead and behind their ears. They also love getting strokes down their back or around the shoulders. With that said, they dislike being touched on their bottom, feet, stomach or tail. Some rabbits may lick you while you pet them. This is a rabbit’s way to pet you back. Part IV. How to pet a guinea pig Most guinea pigs don’t like being touched on their rear end. They prefer to be petted on the nose, under the chin or behind the ears, but try to keep your hands away from their butt. This is especially true with male guinea pigs. Touching their butt is an act of dominance and they don’t like being dominated. Only hold a guinea pig for around fifteen minutes at a time because they pee every fifteen minutes and will start to feel uncomfortable as they try to hold it in.
In this video, we ll discuss 12 unbelievable scientific facts about dogs Dogs are complex and amazing creatures. You probably know quite a bit about these fascinating animals, but there’s always more to learn and, as we continue to love our devoted doggies, research on them moves forward at lightning speed. Here are our favorite scientifically proven facts about dogs. Dogs have a “second nose” We all know that dogs have amazing sniffing capabilities - but what most people don’t know is that dogs have a “second nose”, also known as Jacobson’s Organ. It’s a very small organ that is only receptive to certain odors. most namely, the ones that humans aren’t receptive to. It allows them detect specific compounds, find mates, and smell the special glands in another dog’s rear. And there is more to it than that. This part of their nose allows them to ignore the smell of feces. So, in other words, dogs have one sensitive nose and another that is super-sensitive. Dogs Understand and Smell Time Recent studies suggest that dogs understand time. In fact, dogs have a circadian rhythm, an internal clock inside of their brain which allows them to predict reoccurring events like walks or treats. This gets even more interesting. Dogs smell time because odors change over time. Morning has a different scent from afternoon, which smells different from night-time. When you leave the house to go to work each day, the smell of you in the house decreases with each hour of your absence, and your dog can detect the difference. Perhaps your dog has learned through repetition that when the smell of you has weakened to a specific degree, you come home. In other words, the strength of your odor predicts the time of your return. Dogs do dream. Both dogs and humans go through Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stages. During the REM stage of sleep, dogs dream. When your dog is snoozing away and his paws are moving and eyes are twitching, they’re most definitely dreaming. This gets even more interesting. Scientists believe that dogs not only dream as we do, but also that they dream in a similar fashion to humans, meaning that they replay moments from their day while they’re asleep. Dogs prefer to poop along a north-south axis Yep, you heard that right! If you’ve ever wondered why your dog seems to do a million circles and then poop facing the same direction each time, this is why. Dogs, according to science, disregard personal preference and prefer to poop facing the North-South magnetic axis. As of right now, scientists have no theories as to why this is. So the next time you walk your dog, it might be a good idea to take a compass! Dogs have unique nose prints. Humans have unique fingerprints. Dogs have these, too – except, they have nose prints. A dog s nose is unique to that dog. If you look closely at a dog’s nose, you will see lines forming patterns, just like our fingerprints. You cannot find two dog noses that are the same. If you don’t think this is a jaw-dropping fact, then I don’t know what is! Dogs are smarter than cats. Wait! Before you come after us, remember that science said this, not us. According to scientists and researchers, dogs have twice the number of neurons in their brain than cats do. This suggests that dogs can be up to twice as smart as cats. Dogs see fewer colors than humans. The idea that dogs see only black and white is an old-fashioned idea that is highly inaccurate. Dogs do see colors; they mostly see shades of blue, yellow, white, and black. Dogs can see in the dark. A dog’s eyes have a special membrane that allows them to see in the dark. This membrane is called the “tapetum lucidum”. Dogs are unselfish. When conducting research on dogs’ emotional states and values, it was found that dogs are among a small group of animals that show kindness without the promise of a reward. Your dog actually enjoys showing you unselfish kindness, and is willing to put your needs or wishes before its own. Dogs can detect illness. Dogs can detect cancer. Simply by sniffing someone’s body. A study conducted at the University of California Davis has shown that dogs can detect Cancer-affected tissues out of many samples by smelling them. Cancer-affected cells have a unique odor that doesn t exist in healthy cells. This gets even more interesting. There s an organization in the United Kingdom called Medical Detection Dogs in which dogs are trained to find the odor of cancer in samples such as breath, urine, and swabs. Dogs sweat only through their paws. While humans sweat through their entire bodies, dogs mainly sweat through their paws. More specifically, their sweat glands are located between their paw pads. This is why your dog appreciates it when you wet their paws on a hot summer’s day. Service dogs can go to the bathroom on command. Have you ever wondered where and when service dogs go potty? Well, service dogs are trained to do their business on command!
