Smudge went to a dog pool party at the "Dogs n Togs" annual event in the outdoor summer pool in Khandallah, Wellington. At the end of the summer season when the outdoor pool is set to close, they host a special day where dogs are invited for the last swim. We missed out on getting tickets last year, but this year managed to get one for Smudge for this incredibly popular event. Owners aren t allowed in to swim with the pups (we didn t realize this beforehand, thinking we d be able to swim with Smudge, but the doggies get the pool all to themselves), and this is the last activity before all the water gets emptied out. There were lots of people & dogs in the pool area, and outside families had also gathered to enjoy seeing the dogs swimming, jumping, and generally frolicking in the pool. Smudge will quite happily go in the sea or in a river, however this was the first time she has had an experience of a pool. Cute beagle Smudge noticed an unusual visitor to the beach. Who could it be? And why was it there? Smudge was so excited seeing this visitor, she barked in true beagle style - raising the alert and being completely adorable. Cute beagle sees a Halloween carved pumpkin and has an surprising reaction....though in hindsight perhaps maybe we should ve expected it with a beagle dog?! Smudge s dog friendly Halloween Pumpkin was based on a "Jack O Lantern" but while it was made from carving a pumpkin, it deviated from the tradition of having a light inside from either a flame or electricity. Cute beagle Smudge visits Otari-Wilton s Bush in Wellington. This is an amazingly beautiful forest sanctuary, with both young and ancient native trees and plants of NZ, attracting native birds to visit the area, flying through the tree canopy and singing as they go. She explores along the trails along the Kaiwharawhara Stream, the Ponga Lawn, the Fernery, and the Troup Picnic Area, roughly following parts of the Nature Trail and parts of the Circular Walk track. This is a special place given that much of NZ flora, experts have suggested as much as 80%, is only found here and no where else. Also as a consequence of fostering native plants (and no doubt active pest management) many native birds are drawn to the area. The forest reserve covers 100 hectares with a wide choice of trails depending on fitness, ability, and time available. The name Otari, in Te Reo Maori (the NZ Maori Language), is a reflection of this area s use in early times as a place where food was sourced. The Wilton part of the name is a nod to Job Wilton and his family, early settlers who fenced off a section of the original forest to preserve it from being turned into farm land or trees being felled for building. Smudge has a last minute visit to Hataitai Beach on the last day of Springtime as during the Summer season dogs are not allowed in this little bay. It is quite a popular spot with swimmers, kayakers, and so on, all year around, but in Summer time it can get quite crowded and busy on the beach area as well as the water. Cute beagle, Smudge, explores around Oriental Bay Wellington. It was a sunny Spring day, one of those rare Wellington days with only light wind. Smudge started on the hill above the bay, with views of the Wellington City skyline, dropping down to the waterfront for a wander along the seaside, before returning up the hill for one last glimpse of the gorgeous city & sea view. About Oriental Bay: Oriental Bay is a popular suburb of central Wellington because of it s proximity to the city centre combined with seaviews and seaside recreation. It boasts a sandy beach with golden sand, enlarged and formed from sand originally from Golden Bay in Nelson, the South Island. This beach is often referred to as the most popular beach in Wellington, and on a sunny weekend day in mid-summer it can be extremely crowded (by NZ standards). It is also the closest sandy beach to the central city. Dogs are only allowed on the beach during late Autumn - early Spring so Smudge wasn t able to go on the sand this visit but there is a wide footpath used by walkers, runners, cyclists, parents with buggies, and people using scooters or skates, which she enjoyed. If you walk further along than we did, there is also a great children s playground and picnicking area, a few cafes, and a swimming pool before reaching the city outskirts. Cute beagle dog visits a small bay by the sea on a sunny day. This little bay is rocky rather than sandy, and to the side is a little wharf which, though not today, is sometimes used for fishing from the shore. Lots of good scents for a beagle scenthound to discover!
