The ability to enjoy digital concerts online was some consolation, but as nothing can quite match the magic of direct contact between performer and audience, the few live concerts that were able to go ahead during this period were particularly meaningful. Live from Salzburg documents two such remarkable events, featuring mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča’s appearances at the Salzburg Festival in the summers of 2020 and 2021 with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Christian Thielemann. These are concerts of historic significance, in part because they defied the crisis facing live performance worldwide, but first and foremost because they provided music-making of such exceptional intensity. Orchestral songs were again at the heart of the programme, this time Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder. These five songs do not, however, constitute a self-contained cycle but are individual pieces that Mahler wrote at different times. Their only link is that all five poems were written by the same poet, whose sensitive verse sets their basic tone. Mahler originally set all five poems for solo voice and piano, opining that they were “chamber-like in character”, and there is no doubt that the Rückert-Lieder are heartfelt, largely intimate character-pieces that privilege personal emotion. This aspect finds particularly impressive expression in the heartfelt love song “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”, whose floating melodic line and rapt beauty cast their spell on the listener, while creating a somnambulistic atmosphere. Bringing performers and audiences together today demands creative solutions. Deutsche Grammophon has launched “Moment Musical”, a series of professional live streams and delayed replays of concerts given by members of DG’s family of artists. Hilary Hahn’s album Eclipse features Dvořák’s spirited Violin Concerto. The violinist performed this tour de force from the Czech composer’s “Slavic period” in Frankfurt in April 2021.You can enjoy her captivating performance of the third movement (III. Finale. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo) here. Dvořák, a village butcher’s son raised in central Bohemia, incorporated the folk songs and dances he had heard as a boy in his mature musical language in defiance of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s suppression of Czech culture and language. The Violin Concerto in A minor, Op.53, written between 1879 and 1882 for the great virtuoso Joseph Joachim, weaves folk-inspired themes typical of Dvořák’s Slavic period into the classical forms of sonata and rondo. It concludes with a stylized version of the furiant, a fiery Czech dance, part of what Hahn calls “a gigantic statement of human emotion.” Hilary Hahn’s latest album, Eclipse, celebrates the power of authenticity. Recorded with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Andrés Orozco-Estrada, it sees the triple Grammy-winning violinist deliver interpretations of three works charged with universal emotions yet rooted in their composers’ musical heritage: Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, Ginastera’s Violin Concerto and Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy. “This recording tells stories I didn’t understand until I returned to the stage after a long hiatus: the elation of coming into one’s own, the declaration of an artistic identity, and what it means to regain your native language through music,” says Hahn.
