Continuing its celebration of the operas Handel wrote for Covent Garden, The Royal Opera presents Ariodante in concert. Watch at https://stream.roh.org.uk/packages/ariodante-in-concert/videos/ariodante-in-concert Ariodante was the first opera written by Handel for the first theatre on the current Royal Opera House site in 1735 and has not been performed at Covent Garden since. These concert performances bring together singers Paula Murrihy, Chen Reiss, Gerald Finley, Sophie Bevan, Iestyn Davies, Ed Lyon and the Royal Opera Chorus with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House conducted by Baroque music specialist Christian Curnyn. Set in medieval Scotland and based on a sixteenth-century epic poem, the same source as Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Ariodante tells the story of a prince, in love with the daughter of the King, who is driven to despair by a false accusation of his loved one’s infidelity and finally reunited with her when the treachery is revealed. The opera contains some of Handel’s most beautiful music with wonderful numbers for the title role including the haunting scena ‘E vivo ancora?... Eckhard Deppe, a pianist, composer and arranger, has made a wonderful piano solo version of the 19th-century American folk song "Shenandoah" entitled, "Fantasy on Shenandoah River". I played it the other day and the melody caught the attention of our daughter Emilie. She loved it and asked about and the mysterious Shenandoah River. So, we did a little research and made our own version of the song, to fit this piano arrangement. Although I have a terrible voice, we enjoyed singing it very much. So, Emilie suggested, as it s the run-up to Christmas, we should try and record it, just for fun. Concertgebouworkest Young 2021 has finally started! 72 young musicians from all over Europe arrived at Akoesticum. In the evening they already rehearsed together for the first time. The summer camp will last until 22 August. In the next couple of weeks they will work on a concert programme with conductor Daniel Harding and pianist Paul Lewis. The sectionals are led by musicians of the Concertgebouworkest. They will also play chamber music under the baton of musicians of the Concertgebouworkest.
