The Royal Opera perform Bizet s Carmen in Barrie Kosky s refreshing production, broadcast online via Vimeo as part of the Royal Opera House s #OurHouseToYourHouse series. Award-winning director Barrie Kosky provides a refreshing perspective on this well-known opera. He explores Carmen s ever-changing nature – marked by her series of contrasting costumes – and her vitality through dance. The pre-recorded voice of a narrator (perhaps Carmen herself) ensures that we experience the whole story from her perspective, and the production s unique performing edition (by Michael Rot) offers a chance for audience members to hear music Bizet omitted from the opera s first performances. Carmen had only lukewarm success at its 1875 premiere – perhaps due to its unconventional subject – but soon became immensely popular, and has remained so. Its glorious score boasts a host of wonderful melodies, including Carmen s sensual Habanera and Seguidilla, Don José s tender Flower Aria and Escamillo s rousing Toreador Song. There are also passionate duologues, above all the intense, final confrontation between Carmen and Don José.

Watch for 30 days from 7pm BST Friday 25 September. https://www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-events/dances-at-a-gathering-2020-details Dances at a Gathering by Jerome Robbins is a fluid exercise in pure dance for five couples, set to piano music by Fryderyk Chopin. It was created for New York City Ballet in 1969, when it was an immediate success. The following year, it was performed by The Royal Ballet in London to similar acclaim and returns this Season to the repertory after more than ten years. Robbins initially intended to choreograph just a single pas de deux for a gala, but in rehearsal it grew into this major modern classic. The subtle interplay in performance between dancers and dances is extraordinarily atmospheric and suggestive of relationships and personalities, although Robbins was insistent that any story is simply that of a community of dancers dancing. The first Royal Ballet cast included such leading lights as Monica Mason, Lynn Seymour, Antoinette Sibley, Anthony Dowell, Rudolf Nureyev and David Wall, and this revival presents a wonderful opportunity for audiences today to see the current generation of Royal Ballet dancers take on such a milestone work.

Cellist Johan van Iersel studied with Elias Arizcuren at the Utrecht Conservatory, where he graduated with distinction in 1995. He went on to study with Philippe Müller at the Paris conservatory, and participated in masterclasses with Siegfried Palm, Mstislav Rostropovich and Heinrich Schiff. Van Iersel is appointed assistant principal cellist with the Concertgebouworkest since September 1997. He was a prizewinner at the 1990 Princess Christina Competition, the 1992 Postbank Sweelinck Competition and the competition of the Foundation for Young Musical Talent in the Netherlands in 1991. Together with pianist Jeroen Bal, he was awarded the 1992 Silver Vriendenkrans Competition by the Society of Friends of the Concertgebouworkest. Johan van Iersel forms the Vermeer trio with Jeroen Bal and assistant concert master Tjeerd Top. He is also the cellist of the internationally active Blaeu String Quartet, and used to be a member of the Escher Trio. He gives regular solo performances with such orchestras as the Concertgebouworkest, the former Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra and the Residentie Orchestra. Since 2005 Johan van Iersel plays a cello built by F. Ruggieri (Cremona, 1687), previously owned by his cello teacher. This cello was purchased by Foundation Concertgebouworkest together with a number of private patrons and provided on loan to Van Iersel.
