Cellist Edgar Moreau unites with his three siblings – violinists Raphaëlle and David and pianist Jérémie – in works by Antonín Dvořák and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui makes his Royal Ballet choreographic debut with an exploration of one of the most powerful figures in Greek mythology in a retelling of the tale of Medusa. Subscribe to our channel and find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is artistic director of Royal Ballet of Flanders as well as artistic director of his own company, Eastman, and associate artist at Sadler s Wells. Cherkaoui s style is eclectic, drawing on his training in many different styles of dance, from ballet to hip-hop via tap, jazz and flamenco. So, his new work, created on The Royal Ballet, brings yet further, new stylistic fusions to the Company repertory and the Royal Opera House stage. Cherkaoui has created more than fifty works for companies including Les Ballets C de la B, Dutch National Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Paris Opera Ballet and Martha Graham Dance Company. His works often explore themes of cultural difference, religion and spirituality. For example, Sutra (2008) was created in collaboration with artist Antony Gormley and the Shaolin Monks. Following its world premiere at Sadler s Wells, Sutra continues to be performed across the world. This clip features music by Olga Wojciechowska.

Cathy Marston has previously been an Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House and Director of Bern Ballett. The inspiration for Marston’s first work for The Royal Ballet is the momentous life and career of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré with designs by award winning designer Hildegard Bechtler. It contains some of his most spectacular choreography and a magnificent score by Alexander Glazunov, full of spirited rhythms and lilting waltzes – George Balanchine called it ‘some of the finest ballet music we have’. Rudolf Nureyev had an intimate knowledge of Raymonda: he performed in the ballet as a young dancer with the Kirov Theatre and staged a full-length version for The Royal Ballet in 1964, reviving many of the dances from memory. Nureyev presented an adapted version of Act III at Covent Garden in 1969. Against an opulent setting created by Barry Kay, a Hungarian folkdance opens the wedding celebrations for a ballerina and her cavalier. A lively male pas de quatre is followed by the famous grand pas hongrois, which contains ensembles for all 10 dancers, who wear radiant white costumes. Act III of Raymonda was performed as part of a tribute to Nureyev at the Royal Opera House in 2003.

This stream is supported by Rolex and the Paul Hamlyn Education Fund The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, its first production at its new home in Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful Princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived by then Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage. The masterful 19th-century choreography of Marius Petipa is combined with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. Together they create an enchanting sequence of gems in the ballet repertory – from the iconic Rose Adage, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, and the lilting Garland Waltz to the Vision Pas de deux, as Florimund sees Aurora for the first time, and the celebratory divertissements and final pas de deux that bring the ballet to its glorious close.
