Lev Ivanov s 1892 ballet combined with Tchaikovsky s sumptuous, iconic score are presented in a festive period setting with vivid designs to make this a charming and magical production. Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet begins in the 19th-century German home of the Stahlbaums, where they are hosting a lively Christmas party. The period setting is captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman s designs, which include authentic Christmas tree decorations that are magically brought to life. Wright s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet s original material, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love.

Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier Suite In his opera Der Rosenkavalier, Richard Strauss dreamt of the world in Mozart’s time, a period that for him, in the years before the outbreak of the First World War, seemed angelically innocent; as a result he portrayed 18th-century Vienna with its manners and traditions, but also surprisingly with late-19th-century waltzes and an occasionally overripe hyper-Romantic orchestral sound. The immediate success of Der Rosenkavalier prompted Strauss to make an orchestral suite from its music, consisting of the prelude and several highlights. Mariss Jansons, chief conductor Mariss Jansons was chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 2004 to 2015. Jansons has been music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2003. He has made numerous appearances throughout the world as a guest conductor of the Berlin, the Vienna and the London Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the leading orchestras in the United States. Jansons has been awarded various honours and awards, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize.

Our daughter Emilie is 5 years old. The first song she heard, liked and wanted to sing herself, was “Moon River”. Emilie asked to sing another song so I played through a number in different styles. She instantly liked “My Favourite Things” and choose this song. Thomas Mann In Death in Venice, Thomas Mann tells the story of von Aschenbach - a celebrated German writer representing Mann s alter ego - who meets an innocent adolescent, Tadzio. The writer s intense, uncontrollable infatuation ultimately leads to his spiritual and physical destruction. Its overture - which introduces us to the sinister motif signifying Fate - is one of his most memorable. The opera also contains some of Verdi’s most brilliant choral writing, including Act III’s stirring ‘Rataplan’ chorus, and several beautiful and intimate arias such as Leonora s ardent Act IV Pace, pace mio Dio! . There s comedy too with the scenes for the greedy monk Fra Melitone. Christof Loy s colourful and spectacular production reflects the kaleidoscopic nature of Verdi s opera, where intense personal dramas play out against a background of war, and in which religion plays an ambiguous role. Verdi and his librettist and friend Francesco Maria Piave based La forza del destino on Ángel de Saavedra s highly dramatic play Don Alvaro, o la fuerzo del sino, and also incorporated material from Schiller s Wallenstein s Camp for Act III s military scenes. Following Forza s 1862 St Petersburg premiere, Verdi made extensive revisions to the score. The most substantial of these were a new overture, and a less melodramatic ending, in which Don Alvaro remained alive rather than committing suicide. The revised Forza, the version best known today, had its premiere on 27 February 1869 at La Scala, Milan.

The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created on Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour.
