The event will be presented by Flora Willson. Following his success last Season with The Nose, Barrie Kosky returns to Covent Garden with a highly physical production of Carmen which was originally created for Frankfurt Opera. His is a far-from-traditional take on the classic, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character. --- Carmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form – numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. The opera’s heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after, and never learned of the spectacular success his Carmen would achieve: the opera has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone. This ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors, whose Royal Opera debut with Shostakovich’s The Nose in 2016 was greeted with delight. For Carmen he has devised a far-from-traditional version, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character. --- The production is supported by Abu Dhabi Festival and is staged with generous philanthropic support from Mrs Aline Foriel-Destezet, Yvonne and Bjarne Rieber, Alan Howard, Trifon and Despina Natsis, The ROH Young Philanthropists, and the Friends of Covent Garden.

His activity as pianist is very prolific. He usually accompanies very well-known Spanish lyric singers such as Francisco or Alberto Cortez on their tours across Spain and abroad. He has also played as solo accompanist and soloist in countless concert halls such as Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Palau de la Música in Valencia, Palau de la Música in Barcelona or Olympia Theater in Paris. As composer, his music has been performed in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, United Kingdom, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine, Denmark, the United States, Mexico, Argentina and Australia. He has received various commissions from diverse international organizations. At present he combines his career as pianist and composer with his work as teacher at the Advanced School of Music Katarina Gurska. Building on the success of Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Winter’s Tale received ecstatic praise at its premiere, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its intelligent, distinctive and emotionally powerful story, told through exquisite dance. It is now widely judged to be a modern ballet classic. The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. With powerful designs by Bob Crowley and atmospheric music by Joby Talbot, The Winter’s Tale is a masterful modern narrative ballet.

Find an encore screening in a cinema near you https://www.roh.org.uk/cinemas Verdi based La traviata on Alexandre Dumas fils s novel and play La Dame aux camélias, inspired by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. Verdi offered a more complex and sympathetic portrayal of his heroine than Dumas, highlighting Violetta s noble nature and her devotion to Alfredo. La traviata had an initially lukewarm reception, but after Verdi revised the work in 1854 it became enormously successful. It is currently the most performed opera in the world, and the role of Violetta a favourite for many star sopranos. Richard Eyre s naturalistic production contrasts the superficial glamour of 19th-century Parisian high life with intimate scenes for Violetta with Alfredo and Giorgio Germont, culminating in the heart-breaking final act. Verdi s sublime score contains some of his most inspired arias and duets, including Violetta s introspective Ah fors è lui and hedonistic Sempre libera , Violetta and Germont s poignant Act II encounter and Alfredo and Violetta s Parigi, o cara , in which they dream of a happy future.
