Philippe Jaroussky and the Ensemble Artaserse perform opera arias by Francesco Cavalli with mastery on his newest album, Ombra Mai Fu. Keep listening: https://w.lnk.to/ombramaifuLY "I really wanted to use the album’s playing time to show all the variety and all the qualities of Cavalli’s music," said Philippe. "The album is designed to illustrate the contrasts in his operas as they move from one scene to the next, where a lamento might be directly followed by something very humorous." He is joined by the Ensemble Artaserse, soprano Emőke Baráth, and contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux. _______ Warner Classics ► Website: http://www.warnerclassics.com Subscribe to our: ► YT- Channel: https://wnrcl.me/subscribeYT ► Newsletter https://wnrcl.me/subscribeNL Follow us on: ► Facebook: http://www.fb.com/WarnerClassicsErato ► Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/warner_classics ► Twitter: http://twitter.com/WarnerClassics ► YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/warnerclassics Listen to us on: ► Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/warnerclassics ► Apple Music: http://itunes.apple.com/curator/warner-classics/1153741571 ► Deezer https://www.deezer.com/profile/321050935 Warner Classics is the home of classical music, featuring iconic high audio quality recordings from the greatest classical legends, opera stars and orchestras of the last century. Watch the complete performance free of charge in HD quality on our website: https://www.concertgebouworkest.nl/en/strauss-macbeth The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performs Richard Strauss’s Macbeth, conducted by Andris Nelsons. Strauss based his tone poem on Shakespeare’s play about general Macbeth usurping the Scottish throne. Richard Strauss’s Macbeth Richard Strauss based his Macbeth on Shakespeare’s eponymous play. Strauss has written ‘Macbeth’ in the score at the moment when the first theme is heard (here at 0:26). It is sturdy music, full of ambition and conveying the impression of a successful general. Lady Macbeth’s music (at 2:43) is sweetly seductive, although later it becomes capricious and obdurate by turns. These are Strauss’s only indications as to the programme of the tone poem, but one can identify a number of moments from the play in the music with certainty. Andris Nelsons, conductor Andris Nelsons debuted with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2008 and now conducts the orchestra regularly. Nelsons studied with Alexander Titov in St. Petersburg and took private lessons with Mariss Jansons. Having conducted the North West German Philharmonic, the Latvian National Opera and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons currently is music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig.

Acclaimed Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite creates her first work for The Royal Ballet, responding to the refugee crisis. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/mixed-programmes/the-human-seasons-after-the-rain-new-crystal-pite Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite has been acclaimed as ‘one of the most talented and intriguing choreographers working today’ (New York Times). She danced with Ballet British Columbia and then with William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt, before founding her own company Kidd Pivot in 2002. Pite’s work shows the influence of Forsythe’s groundbreaking style but heightened with a new lyricism and a recurrent interest in the role of narrative in dance. ‘Ultimately my interest in story has to do with connecting to people’, she told The Telegraph in 2014. ‘Everybody is looking for a story.’ Pite is perhaps best known in the UK for her work as an associate artist with Sadler’s Wells, which includes the multi-award-winning Polaris – a breathtakingly ambitious work for 64 dancers to music by Thomas Adès. In this new work for The Royal Ballet she creates a further large-scale ensemble work, to music from Górecki’s powerful ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’.
Watch the complete performance free of charge in HD quality on our website: https://www.concertgebouworkest.nl/en/brahms-haydn-variations Herbert Blomstedt conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms. In a separate video Herbert Blomstedt gives an explanation of it in an animated fashion. Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture Johannes Brahms composed his Academic Festival Overture as a ‘thank you’ to the University of Breslau, which had awarded him an honorary doctorate. Besides several student drinking songs, Brahms also gave the melody of the nationalistic song ‘Wir hatten gebauet ein stattliches Haus’ a prominent place in the Academic Festival Overture. This can only be a confirmation of his admiration for Bismarck (who had recently created a unified Germany in place of the previous array of smaller sovereign states) and of his belief in German unity. Herbert Blomstedt, conductor Herbert Blomstedt has been a welcome guest conductor with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1983. At the age of ninety plus, with enormous mental and physical presence, verve and artistic drive, Herbert Blomstedt continues to be at the helm of all leading international orchestras. In addition to the performance of Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture under the direction of Herbert Blomstedt, you can also watch Blomstedt’s entertaining explanation of the work.

Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 Johannes Brahms composed his Symphony No. 2 in the Austrian village of Pörtschach, a place where, according to one of his letters, “… the melodies flourish so luxuriantly that you have to be careful not to trip over them.” Brahms also warned his publisher teasingly that “I have never yet composed anything so sad and heavy: you will have to publish it with black borders.” However, the Second Symphony has a lyrical and almost elated character, and was soon nicknamed the “Pastoral”. Andris Nelsons, conductor Andris Nelsons debuted with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2008 and now conducts the orchestra regularly. Nelsons studied with Alexander Titov in St. Petersburg and took private lessons with Mariss Jansons. Having conducted the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Latvian National Opera (in his hometown of Riga) and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons currently is music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and recently took up the position of Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig.
