Frederick Ashton, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, created Les Deux Pigeons for The Royal Ballet Touring Company in 1961. Find out more: http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/the-two-pigeons-by-frederick-ashton He restaged the work for the main company later that year as The Two Pigeons. He and his regular collaborator John Lanchbery (La Fille mal gardée) worked together to adapt André Messager’s 1886 score, created for a ballet by Louis Mérante at the Paris Opéra. Like Messager and Mérante, Ashton turned to La Fontaine’s fable of the same title for inspiration – but Ashton tells quite a different story. He explores the nature of love in a work that has deft comic lightness and soulful pathos in equal measure.
Principals of The Royal Ballet Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae rehearse Rubies from George Balanchine s Jewels with Patricia Neary. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/jewels Watch the full Insight session at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7UOls9Vq0E Now celebrating its 50th year, George Balanchine’s sparkling ballet still shines with all the brilliance of the gemstones that inspired it. George Balanchine’s glittering ballet Jewels was inspired by the beauty of the gem stones he saw in the New York store of jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels. He went on to make history with this, the first abstract three-act ballet, first performed in 1967 by New York City Ballet. Jewels was performed in full by The Royal Ballet for the first time in 2007, using costume designs from the original NYCB production and new set designs by Jean-Marc Puissant. Each of the three movements draws on a different stone for its inspiration and a different composer for its sound. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the lyricism of ‘Emeralds’. The fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet in ‘Diamonds’, with the splendour of Imperial Russia and Tchaikovsky’s opulent Third Symphony. Each section salutes a different era in classical ballet’s history as well as a distinct period in Balanchine’s own life. Through it all, Balanchine displays his genius for combining music with visionary choreography.
Join dancers of The Royal Ballet in the studio as they prepare for George Balanchine s Jewels. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/jewels TV and radio broadcaster Kirsten O’Brien will host the event, which will feature interviews and rehearsals with Artists of The Royal Ballet, ballet repetiteur Elyse Borne, and the American choreographer and director Patricia Neary. Neary, a former dancer with New York City Ballet, works for The George Balanchine Trust and alongside Borne is responsible for staging his works around the world. Balanchine made history when he created Jewels – the first abstract three-act ballet. It was first performed in 1967 by New York City Ballet. The choreographer was reportedly inspired by the beauty of the precious stones he saw in Van Cleef & Arpels in New York. Principals of The Royal Ballet Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae will rehearse a section of Act I, ‘Rubies’. Then, fellow Principals Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares will rehearse ‘Diamonds’. Each section, featuring the music of Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky, salutes a different era in classical ballet’s history as well as a distinct period in Balanchine’s own life. Through it all, Balanchine displays his genius for combining music with visionary choreography. The insight also features an in-depth look at the ballet’s ornate costumes with costume supervisor Allan Watkins.

The Alice s Adventures in Wonderland cast and creative team give an insight into creating the much-loved character of the Queen of Hearts. Royal Ballet Principals Zenaida Yanowsky, Sarah Lamb and Lauren Cuthbertson, Ballet Master Christopher Saunders and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon give a glimpse into the rehearsal studio into the creation of a modern classic. Christopher Wheeldon s Alice s Adventures in Wonderland arrived on the stage in 2011 with a burst of colour, theatrical magic and inventive choreography. It was The Royal Ballet s first full-length work since 1995 and was instantly acclaimed as a classic. Joby Talbot s score combines sweeping melodies, which gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century, with contemporary effects. Bob Crowley s wildly imaginative sets and costumes draw on puppetry, projections and masks to bring Wonderland to life. Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary characters down the rabbit hole: from the highly-strung Queen of Hearts, who performs a hilarious rendition of the famous Rose Adagio from The Sleeping Beauty; to dancing playing cards; a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. There is a love narrative for Alice and the Knave of Hearts, and they dance a tender pas de deux at the close of Act II. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll s story -- a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and an unhinged tea party are all created in vivid detail. Principal Dancer, Nehemiah Kish, on dancing the role of Solor and working with choreographer Natalia Makarova for La Bayadère. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/la-bayadere-by-natalia-makarova Read the news feature - http://www.roh.org.uk/news/watch-nehemiah-kish-on-la-bayadere Marius Petipa s exotic La Bayadère was given its premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877. It was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century but was almost unknown in the West until 1961, when the touring Kirov Ballet performed the famous Kingdom of the Shades scene. Natalia Makarova saw the ballet as a child in Leningrad and created this version for American Ballet Theatre in 1980. Legendary India provides the setting for a tale of love, murder and vengeful judgement by the gods, set to a lyrical score by Ludwig Minkus. The choreography provides powerful moments for the two opposing ballerinas -- the beautiful temple dancer, Nikiya, and her jealous rival, Gamzatti -- while a bronze idol comes vividly to life in a stunning solo. La Bayadère s most frequently performed sequence is the dream-like Kingdom of the Shades, when a mesmerizing procession of ballerinas dance in unison across a moonlit stage. Opulent designs by Yolanda Sonnabend perfectly fit the ballet s fevered exoticism.
