The piece also portrays his victory over a creative block.The development of the ‘hero’ begins in the Seventh Symphony with a fluctuation between contrasting emotions and, after nocturnal visions in the central movements, erupts into triumphant victory in the finale. At the very end Mahler sets off a grand firework display with the full forces of the brass and percussion. Pierre Boulez, conductor Pierre Boulez debuted with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1960. The French composer and conductor was one of the leading figures in music during the period following World War II. Between 1977 and 1992 Boulez concentrated primarily on the founding and direction of IRCAM in Paris, an institute for research into sound and electro-acoustical music. At the same time he also founded the Ensemble Intercontemporain. He has received countless awards and decorations, including 26 Grammy Awards. Pierre Boulez passed away in 2016.

Verdi began work on Simon Boccanegra in 1856. His literary source was a play by the Spanish writer Antonio García Gutiérrez, in which intense familial relationships play out against a background of political tension - always a favourite scenario for Verdi. The original version of the opera (1857) was unsuccessful. More than twenty years later, Verdi revised Boccanegra with the help of Arrigo Boito, his librettist for the later Otello and Falstaff. Among other changes, they introduced the great Council Chamber scene that closes Act I. The revised Boccanegra s 1881 premiere at La Scala, Milan, was a considerable success. Simon Boccanegra is one of Verdi s most subtly powerful works, in which large-scale choral episodes, such as the Council Chamber scene, contrast with passages of tender intimacy, including Amelia and Boccanegra s ecstatic Act I duet. Elijah Moshinsky s handsome production is inspired by Renaissance art and architecture. Images of the sea - which Moshinsky sees as a metaphor for mortality - recur throughout. Oscar-nominated composer and pianist Dustin O’Halloran releases his debut Deutsche Grammophon album Silfur. This new release of fifteen pieces distils and expands upon the composer’s concepts of time, past and present, perceived through music. It comprises two new works – ‘Opus 56’ for solo piano and ‘Constellation No. 2’ for piano, cello and electronics – as well as new recordings of a selection of tracks from O’Halloran’s solo albums, including four new string arrangements. The first taste of Silfur is ‘Opus 18’, along with this beautiful live performance video, shot at Reykjavík’s Fríkirkjan church by director Blair Alexander. “Silfur is an exploration of the music of my past and how it reflects back to me now in the present. Evoking images of different moments, places and periods of my life, and rediscovering the pieces that have stayed with me. Sometimes we can only understand ourselves by looking back, and hopefully, finding the thread of who we are and who we have always been.” – Dustin O’Halloran Dustin O’Halloran worked on Silfur during the lockdown in Iceland, where he ordinarily spends part of the year. Unable to return to his other home in Los Angeles, he drew inspiration from isolation and Iceland’s unique atmosphere, revisiting works from four solo albums and refining them through the prism of his Icelandic experience. At the first recording session for this album he was given a gift of silfurberg (“silver rock”), a native Icelandic crystal, which inspired its title. “As light enters it,” explains O’Halloran, “it’s reflected into two perspectives. It felt that that’s what I was doing in making this record.
