The Vier letzte Lieder depict the different stages of life. Strauss’s Four Last Songs The Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs) for soprano and orchestra are the final works of Richard Strauss. The four songs form a modest cycle depicting the different stages of life. ‘Frühling’ is full of joy and expectation; in ‘September’ the poet says goodbye to summer. In ‘Beim Schlafengehen’ the soul yearns for the ‘magic circle’ of the night, and finally in ‘Im Abendrot’ an older couple witness a sunset, and wonder if they’re perhaps experiencing the end of life. Anja Harteros, soprano Anja Harteros made her debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in this performance of Strauss’s Four Last Songs in 2011. The German soprano studied with Liselotte Hammes and Astrid Huber-Aulmann. In the summer of 1999, Anja Harteros won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, which led to many invitations for concerts and guest performances. Since then, she has appeared as a guest at all the major opera houses in the world.

Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/Manon Kenneth MacMillan began work on Manon shortly after the birth of his only daughter. His source was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted twice for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score made from a patchwork of works by Massenet, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet s repertory. MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon, bringing his customary psychological insight and the memories of his own impoverished upbringing. He described his heroine as not so much afraid of being poor as ashamed of being poor . Designs by MacMillan s friend Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable poverty. MacMillan s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux s impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan s earlier work, Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan s most heartbreaking dramas.

I am Hera also embraces the singer’s spiritual side, not least in Un-Yung La’s sublime setting of Psalm 23 which, she says, stands for her core values and the importance of remaining courageous in difficult times. Along with Joowon Kim’s beautiful and dramatic “Like the wind that met with lotus”, this setting reflects her love of the music of her native South Korea, and her understanding that her roots, assimilated now into a wider, cosmopolitan outlook, are vital to her sense of identity. “I felt a responsibility to treat this album as part of a much bigger exploration of myself,” says Hera. “I’d already discovered that the more I try to become a different person, the more I realise it doesn’t work. So I came to be more authentic on the stage and in my singing by being truthful to the score. It was very scary to do that in front of the microphone for the first time, but I felt so supported by everyone involved.
