The Salzburg Festival is the world’s leading festival of opera, music and drama. The summer of 2020 marks the centenary of its foundation. Although this year’s Festival is shorter than usual, with in some cases an entirely new programme, there will be at least one outstanding symphonic highlight, when Riccardo Muti will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a performance of the great Choral Symphony no. 9 in D minor op.125 with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus and a hand-picked team of soloists. The Vienna Philharmonic’s principal doublebass player Ödön Racz will also be taking part in this performance, of course, when he will lead the double-bass section. For us he has made an exemplary recording of the recitative’s famous theme from the start of the final movement. ------------------------------ Few other symphonic themes are as popular as the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. For doublebass players, conversely, another passage in this famous “Symphony of Fate” has acquired a particular significance: the beginning of the third movement, the Allegro. Ödön Racz, the Vienna Philharmonic’s principal double-bass player, is making his own personal contribution to the Beethoven celebrations of 2020 by performing this interesting excerpt from the perspective of a double-bass player. Artist of The Royal Ballet, Anna Rose O’Sullivan, gives audiences a backstage tour of the Royal Opera House during preparations for Peter Wright’s production of The Nutcracker. Find out more: http://www.roh.org.uk/nutcracker Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of The Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario, which is based on a fairytale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and unforgettable music has since made it one of the best-loved of all ballets. In Peter Wright’s classic production, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic – a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara is taken to the Kingdom of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of the best-known melodies in ballet, from the flurrying sounds of the Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this a magical production for the festive season.

Kenneth MacMillan s passionate choreography for Romeo and Juliet shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. Sergey Prokofiev s iconic score provides the basis for the ballet s romantic pas de deux and vibrant crowd scenes, while 16th-century Verona is created by Nicholas Georgiadis s magnificent designs. In 1965, MacMillan s Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created on Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour. It has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since, as well as touring the world, and has become a true classic of the 20th-century ballet repertory.
