Instead of typing out the same answer over and over I thought I would make this short video to help explain my experiences with synthetic oil. I m not saying synthetic oil is bad, in fact it has it s place but my opinion is that place is not in your 15 year old Toyota or Chevy. The reasons as explained in the video are that synthetic has different flow characteristics and can actually cause your engine to leak oil and run noisy. It s perfectly OK to run conventional oil of the correct viscosity and change it on a regular basis. You don t need to spend the extra money on synthetic oil if your owners manual does not call for it. I look forward to your comments on this. How to clean a throttle body and Idle air control valve (iac). This shows you how to fix a high idle, low idle, and or rough idle. Most modern cars have an idler air control valve (IAC) that can get gummed-up and you have to clean it. It just so happens that my 2004 Honda Element had a similar noise so I decided to investigate. Originally I had thought it was an issue with the rear lower control arm bushings or the upper strut mounts but after talking to my friend Scott Armstrong who also has an Element he convinced me to look at the rear stabilizer bushings. After looking at them I found them to be the source of the noise. I replaced them and went for a test drive to find that the noise was gone. This is a VERY inexpensive repair and I suggest you give it a try if you have a noise in the rear end of your Honda Element or CRV. It s much better and easier to use the equipment that was designed for it. In this video I show exactly that, how to use the proper equipment to mount and balance a tire. It s not terribly exciting but I do show some things that are necessary when performing this work on an aluminum wheel. You MUST clean the bead area before you mount a new tire onto an aluminum wheel or else it will forever leak at the bead. I say this because all too often I see a tire that leaks air that s just been installed where the rim was not cleaned. Enough of my soap box. Also this video only covers the basic tire mount and balance. When it comes to low profile or large tires it s a bit more complicated. As far as tires go these are pretty easy and straightforward. If you re trying to find TDC (Top Dead Center) compression stroke say for a leak down test, this is an easy way to do that. Also, if you are doing a leak down test you re already set up to do the test once you find TDC. This method could save you quite a bit of time. Just be sure to use a gauge that s capable of reading pressure as well as vacuum or this method won t work.
