Cars don t need back pressure. More specifically, internal combustion engines do not benefit from back pressure in the exhaust. Back pressure is a pressure in the opposite direction to the exhaust s flow. The goal of an exhaust is remove spent combustion gases as quickly and efficiently as possible out of the engine cylinders. Back pressure has the opposite effect, impeding exhaust flow. Exhaust velocity, and exhaust scavenging, however, are highly beneficial. This video will discuss wave scavenging, inertial scavenging, and how exhaust pipe length and diameter play a critical role in exhaust velocity and scavenging effectiveness.
