Ford s Electric F-150 pulled a 1 million pound train, but Ford s stunt was way easier than it looked. This isn t a competitive advantage, instead, it s a very clever, very cool, marketing exercise. Towing a million pounds sounds impossible. On an open road, it pretty much is. On a railroad, however, things are different. With a steel wheel riding on a steel track, the rolling resistance of the train is extremely low. The result? A relatively tiny force is required to move the train in comparison to the weight of the train. What makes it easy? Well it all comes down to the coefficient of rolling resistance. This is the ratio of force required to pull a certain rotational mass. For example, a coefficient of rolling resistance of 0.1 means you only need a 1 pound-force to move a 10 pound ball. With steel wheels on a steel track, that ratio is far, far lower. Plenty of trucks out there could have done the same thing Ford s electric F-150 did, if not family crossovers and SUVs. Check out the video for a full breakdown of how it all works. Important Note: This video was filmed prior to my article being published in Road & Track (link below). Upon release of the article, Ford reached out with clarification. Here is additional information with regards to the power required for accelerating the 1.25 million pound train: 1. We want to know how much power it takes to move 1.25 million pounds at a speed of 4.5 mph in just 1,000 ft. 2. We’re going to assume the truck is accelerating for those entire 1,000 ft, and reaches 4.5 mph right when it crosses the 1,000 ft. line. 3. Power = Work / Time. If we calculate work & time, we determine power. 4. Time can be calculated based on average speed over 1,000 ft. Top speed 4.5 mph, starting at 0 mph. Average 2.25 mph. 2.25 mph = 3.3 ft/s. 1000 ft / 3.3 ft/s = 303 seconds (5 minutes, 3 seconds, to go from 0 to 4.5 mph). T = 303 sec. 5. Work = change in kinetic energy. We start at 0, so kinetic energy is zero. All we need to know is final kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is equal to one-half mass times velocity squared (k=0.5mv^2). 12.5M lb = 566,990 kg. 4.5 mph = 2.01 m/s. KE = (0.5)*(566,990 kg)*(2.01168 m/s)^2 = 1,147,263.561 N-m. 6. Plug in variables to Power equation. Power = Work/Time. P = (1,147,263.561 N-m)/(303 seconds) = 3.786 kW or ~ 5 Horsepower. 7. It’s important to note that 5 HP is the power required to to accelerate this mass assuming zero losses. Heat, friction, aerodynamics, etc. There are also smaller assumptions like not accelerating any rotational masses (the train has wheels, etc). A sanity check using the same math shows a 3,300 lb car requires 240 HP to go 0-60 in 3.0 seconds. We know it’s generally double that in the real world. Even giving the truck a factor of 10 advantage, 50 HP is nothing crazy. 8. The train is very heavy, this is the impressive part. Unfortunately, the duration is very long (5 minutes), and the speed is very low (5 mph). Both time and speed variables work heavily against the power required. If the train were to accelerate to 60 mph in the same 1,000 ft distance, it would take 12,000 HP without losses. Quite a difference, just from changing speed! Things were finally starting to slow down from a very busy day of Towing, when I received a phone call from my son, Rudy. He explained that while he was heading out to remote area to look for deer sheds, Jeep number two stalled out and will not restart. After two hours of hiking, him and his friend Bryn were able to catch a ride in a two seater Corvette. I wish I had video of that. They still had a 45 minute ride before they were in cell phone service and couldn’t make a phone call. He was in a place near coral pink sand dunes called elephant gap. We would not be able to get to where he is with a rollback tow truck, and we would have to take jeep number one out there and use a tow rope to bring him back to the pavement. By the time they got back, and we got geared up to go. It was well after dark. We arrived at the staging area and unloaded Jeep number one and headed up to elephant gap. We found jeep number two as Rudy had left it, and were able to retrieve it without too much trouble. We don t (as of July 2019) get the Ranger Raptor in the US, and in Europe, where they do, it s powered by a diesel. This one has Hennessey s tuned 2.3L Turbo-Four making 360 HP and 440 lb/ft of torque through a ten-speed gearbox. Thanks to this truck s FX4 package, there s a proper transfer case with low range and locking rear differential. Hennessey upgrades to ICON coil-over suspension, with new wheels, front and rear bumpers, overfenders, and a host of details. The result is a more reasonably sized Raptor than Ford sells in the US, which goes just as quickly (0-60 in 4.9s), and costs roughly the same out the door. Editor Travis Langness gets behind the wheel of the redesigned 2020 Subaru Outback for a test drive. On the outside, the Outback is updated with fresh new looks in the form of new headlights and taillights, a new front grille, wider fenders, and a bigger opening for loading items in the back. The engines have changed, too, with a reworked version of the standard 2.5-liter engine still powering the base Outback and a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder available if you want to upgrade. It may look like a wagon, but the Subaru is classified as a midsize SUV by our standards, which means it s spacious inside and has a serious amount of ground clearance. It also comes with all-wheel drive as standard. Subaru has added a tablet-style 11.6-inch touchscreen, with crisp graphics and quick responses to user commands. This screen also employs Subaru s Starlink system, which we ve been big fans of in the past and we expect it to perform well here, too. 2020 Subaru Outback Review: The redesigned 2020 Outback features updated powertrains, more standard features, and more capability than ever before. For starters, the Outback gets a new look — sort of. The wagon-like profile is still distinctively Outbackian. But there are new headlights and taillights, a larger front grille, wider fenders, and a wider opening at the rear hatch. It all sits on a new platform that Subaru says decreases road noise and improves structural rigidity. Subaru says it reworked the Outback s base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Power is up from last year s 175 horsepower to 182 ponies in the 2020 model. Torque gets a similarly modest increase from 174 lb-ft to 176 lb-ft, as does fuel economy, which Subaru expects to be 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway. The base powertrain, the non-turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine, gets a small increase in power and it now puts out 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. That s a healthy amount of power, but the optional engine is even better. The turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder replaces the old six-cylinder, and it produces 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. The new 2020 Outback will be available in seven trim levels: base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT and Touring XT. The base, Premium, Limited and Touring models all get the 2.5-liter engine, while XT models get the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine. Standard on all models is Subaru s EyeSight driver assist technology — a suite of active and passive driver aids. That suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist (plus lane centering), and DriverFocus, an infrared camera with facial recognition capabilities that can spot driver fatigue or distraction. Standard on all but the base model is an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio. On upper trim levels, available features include LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, reverse automatic braking, a head-up display, a 180-degree front-view camera, heated and ventilated front seats, four USB ports, and a power rear liftgate. There s also plenty of available soft-touch materials and leather all around inside the cabin — enough to make long road trips comfortable. Off-road, the Subaru Outback is just as trail-friendly as it has ever been. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel-drive system mean that gravel and dirt roads are no issue.
