Raise the car up onto jack stands. Remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the exhaust from the catalytic converter back. Remove the rear suspension stiffener. 3. Remove the differential side of the prop shaft, marking all the joints disconnected. 4. Pull the prop shaft slightly back, and allow it to rest on the shaft protector. 5. Disconnect the lower control arm by removing the lower ball joint. 6. Remove the ABS sensor harness by removing two bolts from the upper arm. Repeat these steps to remove the ball joint and ABS sensor for both sides of the vehicle. 7. Remove the differential joints for each side. There are six mounting bolts and nuts to remove, and then you can remove the joint from the differential. This requires pulling the half shaft away from the differential to clear the internal rod. 8. Remove the EVAP canister cover by removing the single bolt holding it in place. 9. Place a floor jack underneath the differential. A transmission jack is ideal, especially if you’re doing this by yourself, as you want to have a large platform to hold the differential. 11. Starting from the rear of the differential, remove each of the four mounting nuts from the mounting bracket. Then remove the four bolts holding the front mounts in place. 12. Hang the Evap canister out of the way of the differential. There’s a single bolt hold it on, and then a bracket to slip it off and allow it to hang freely. 13. Pull the differential towards the front of the car, which will clear the rear mounting bolts from the mounting bracket. Then lower the differential to the ground using a jack. 14. At this point, I replaced the differential mounts at this point. 15. Fill the differential with the recommended oil. 16. Put the studs into the differential. Mount the front differential bracket onto the new differential. There are four bolts used, each torqued to 47 lb-ft. 17. Using a floor jack, lift the differential back up into the vehicle, and slide it into the rear differential mount. Then install the front mounts; torque to spec. 18. With the front mounting bracket on, there are two nuts and washers that need to be installed and torqued to 47 lb-ft. 19. Replace the EVAP canister, and the single bolt holding it in. Then reinstall the canister cover, tightening the single screw to 7.2 lb-ft. 20. Install the axle half shafts to the differential. Using new hardware, install the twelve nuts and bolts to each side of the differential. 21. For each rear suspension, reinstall the ball joints by torquing the castle nut down to 51 to 58 lb-ft. Slip the cotter pin through the ball joint bolt, and then bend the cotter pin to prevent it from falling out. 22. Reinstall the ABS sensor harness by torquing the two screws to 7.2 lb-ft. 23. Install the prop shaft back to the differential. There are three spacers to be used. The six bolts needs to be torqued to 24 lb-ft. 24. Remount the exhaust, making sure all five hangers are used, and tighten the nuts to the catalytic converter to 25 lb-ft. 25. Finally, install the rear suspension stiffener. 26. Put the wheels back on and lower the car. What Are The Benefits Of A Disconnecting Sway Bar? How Anti-Roll Bars Work - https://youtu.be/_liGnV3PTiQ Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 How do electronic disconnecting sway bars work? One of the balances engineers have to address when designing an off-road truck is the amount of axle articulation allowed, versus the amount of body roll allowed. A stiff suspension means little body roll, but not enough axle articulation. A soft suspension allows for greater articulation of the axle, meaning more contact with the ground, but significantly more body roll. This can be addressed with an electronically controlled disconnecting sway bar for the front axle. At low speeds, with the sway bar disconnected, this allows for significantly more twist of the front axle, without the rear tire coming off the ground. With the Ram Power Wagon shown in this video, decoupling the sway bar allows for a total difference of 26 inches of vertical travel between the center of each of the front wheels. This changes the RTI, Ramp Travel Index, from 423 to 510. At speeds above 18 miles per hour, the sway bar automatically reconnects to decrease body roll, though you can select to turn it on or off below this speed. The Lamborghini Huracán Smashed The Nürburgring Record Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 From Lamborghini s Press Release On ALA: "The Huracán Performante adopts Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA): ALA is also the Italian word for wing. This patented active aerodynamic system developed by Lamborghini for the Huracán Performante provides an active variation of aero load for high down force or low drag. The system is completely integrated into the vehicle in terms of design, weight and performance. The front spoiler integrates the electric motor of the front ALA system, built in a carbon forged frame with active flaps on the top exterior surface. The rear bonnet is designed around the air ducts to the rear wing as well as the wing pylons. Lamborghini’s Piattaforma Inerziale (LPI) governs all the car’s electronic systems in ‘real time’ and is perfectly integrated with the ALA system, activating the ALA system flaps in less than 500 milliseconds to ensure the best aerodynamic set-up of the car in every driving condition. When ALA is off, the active flaps inside the front spoiler are closed, generating the desired high downforce for high speed cornering and full brake conditions. When ALA switches to on the front flaps are opened by the front electric motor, reducing air pressure on the front spoiler and directing air flow via an inner channel and through the specially shaped underside of the car. This drastically reduces drag and optimizes conditions for maximum acceleration and top speed. In the rear of the Performante four ducts are installed below the rear bonnet. The two central ducts are always open to allow underhood ventilation and exhaust cooling, while the two external ducts are connected to the inner channels of the rear wing. The air flow through the rear wing channels is controlled by two electro-actuated flaps. The entire system is 80% lighter than a traditional hydraulic system. When ALA is off the rear flaps are closed, permitting the rear wing to act as a traditional fixed wing. Stability is enhanced in high speed cornering and full braking by creating maximum vertical downforce; 750% more than a Huracán coupé. The LPI turns on the ALA in high throttle conditions, opening the rear flaps to allow air through the rear wing’s inner channels and directing air flow through ridges underneath the wing. This reduces drag and maximizes the car’s acceleration and top speed capabilities. In addition, the rear wing’s inner air channel is split right and left, allowing aero vectoring for high speed cornering. Depending on the direction of the turn, the LPI instructs ALA to be switched on in either the right or left side of the spoiler, increasing downforce and traction on the inner wheel, counteracting the load transfer in rolling conditions. This in turn optimizes the chassis’ momentum, requiring a reduced steering angle and improving the car’s overall dynamic stability." Don t forget to check out my other pages below! 2018 Lexus LC500 v. 2017 Lexus GS F - Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Garmin 4K GPS Camera - http://amzn.to/2fZSSQ0 Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Product Links: Vbox Sport - http://amzn.to/2nPBBwX Garmin 4K Camera Used - http://amzn.to/2fZSSQ0 Data Overlay OBD2 Link - http://amzn.to/2fZMYi3 Driving the Lexus LC500 and the Lexus GS-F around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The car is beautiful, and sounds beautiful, but on the very first corner I took it out on the track, the balance felt off. 2018 Lexus LC500 Review vs 2017 Lexus GS F Review. I drove the GS F immediately after driving the LC500, and felt a big surge of confidence. Having taken both vehicles around the circuit back-to-back, it was easy to compare them directly. My two lap times in the Lexus LC500 were a minute 59.84, and 2 minutes point one five. My two laps in the GS F were 1:58.52, and 1:55.52, both of which confirming my suspicion that the GS F felt more planted, better balanced, and as a result allowed for more confident, quicker driving. Looking at the speed data, my cornering speed was higher in the GS F for nearly every bend. Both vehicles use Lexus’s 5.0 Liter naturally aspirated 90 degree V8. In the GS F, it’s producing 467 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque. In the LC500, it’s producing slightly more of each, 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. The LC500 has a 10 speed automatic, where the GS F has an 8 speed. The GS F weighs in at 4,034 lbs, while the LC500 weighs almost an additional 250 pounds at 4,280! The GS F has larger front tires, and significantly larger front and rear brakes. The GS F also has a better weight distribution, and comes standard with a torque vectoring rear differential. The LC500, on the other hand, comes standard with an open differential, with the option to add a Torsen LSD. To the LC’s credit, it does manage a just slightly quicker 0-60 time, for which the additional torque, and superior transmission play their part. How To Powder Coat Your Car Wheels Honda S2000 Playlist - https://goo.gl/mvZqpi Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Link s To Aaron Gallinger s Work: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/expressphoenix/ Website - http://www.phoenixrimrepair.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wheelrepairphoenix The powder is a blend of polymers, pigments, and other ingredients which are mixed in a hopper. The hopper has a fluidizing plate at the bottom which flows air up through the powder, keeping it in a liquid like state for application. Aaron is using his own self-made fluidizing hopper. Now looking at powder coating gun, on the front of it is a corona ring, which is attached to ground and this captures any overcharged powder particles so that they don’t cause any disruptions on the wheel. Not every powder coating gun has a corona ring. On the front of the gun you can see the x-pattern tip for spraying powder. Once removed, you can see the electrode which charges the powder, and then a white plastic sleeve around it which protects the powder gun from getting any cured powder inside of it. This electrode tip operates up to 80,000 volts. This high voltage ionizes the air surrounding it, meaning the surrounding air particles don’t have a matching number of protons and electrons; in other words it creates a cloud or field around it with a charge. There are different guns available, some with the ability to provide negatively charged particles, and some provide positively charged particles. With Aaron’s powder gun, the powder is then forced through the ionized field using air pressure, and the powder picks up a charge as it passes though. The wheel, in this scenario, is grounded. As the charged powder particles move through the air, they head to the nearest ground, which in this case is the wheel, which the powder then sticks to. Will Future Electric Cars Use A Manual Transmission? Electric Cars Only Have 1 Gear? - https://youtu.be/36H9BVeMYMI Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Big Thanks To Formula E For Sponsoring This Video! Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-DuRqsBQOEk_5o1q4Ze-Fg This is the second video of a five part series where I’ve partnered with Formula E to answer questions about electric vehicles, and this topic was actually inspired by Renault’s season 2 Formula E car, which uses a 2-speed gearbox matched with a single transversely mounted electric motor. What’s super clever about their set up, is that they have incorporated a manual gear stick, using cables and rods to switch between the two gears, rather than the pneumatic paddle shifters which other teams were using. Renaults solution is simpler, and also lighter, as it doesn’t require onboard pumps or air-tanks for gear shifts. But could this be taken a step further, and incorporate a clutch as well for street cars? I spent some time chatting with the current Formula E champion, Lucas Di Grassi, who spends his free time engineering electric bikes, about this idea. We have two questions to answer: 1. Is it possible? 2. Is it logical? Don t forget to check out my other pages below! The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Is Better In Every Way 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Review - https://youtu.be/4CF6ibHBuqs Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 From Subaru s Press Kit: - All-new design language for exterior and interior - Second model to use Subaru Global Platform - 2.0-liter Boxer Engine with Direct Injection - Active Torque Vectoring for improved handling - Available X-Mode for off-road use - New Driver Assist Technology - New Multimedia system adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay "The new Subaru Global Platform, together with the SUBARU BOXER engine; Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD); and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, represent the brand’s core technologies and constitutes the foundation of the next generation of Subaru vehicles. Crosstrek’s new platform integrates new framework with optimized cross sections and highly stiffened joints between structures to significantly enhance straight-line stability, agility, and ride comfort while suppressing noise, vibration, and harshness to a degree not seen before in the small SUV class. Specifically, the new platform increases rigidity of the unitized body structure by over 70 percent. A lower center of gravity and revised suspension systems contribute to the biggest-ever leap in Subaru’s performance evolution. The double-wishbone independent rear suspension mounts its rear stabilizer bar directly to the body, which significantly improves body stiffness and stability compared to the outgoing model. Greater hazard-avoidance capability is another benefit of the Subaru Global Platform’s inherent handling agility. In addition, the resolute straight-line stability that makes the 2018 Crosstrek more relaxing to drive is also an important constituent of the autonomous driving capability this platform can support in future Subaru vehicles. A revised version of the FB 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine gains direct fuel injection and other enhancements to boost both performance (now 152-hp vs. 148 before) and drivability. PowerPulse, Superchargers, and Electric Motors Kill Turbo Lag Turbo Lag vs Boost Threshold - https://youtu.be/cKvOEZ7JCJc Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 From The Volvo Press Kit: "Turbo lag. If the term is unfamiliar, there’s a high chance you have still encountered this common powertrain affliction. This is the experience with many turbocharged engines, when there’s a delay between the driver pressing the throttle and the engine responding as it waits for the turbine to supply its performance boost. Volvo’s D5 twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, however, features an ingenious solution. It combines an electrically driven compressor and a pressurised air tank to ensure immediate, on-demand acceleration. When the driver requests rapid momentum by pressing harder on the throttle pedal, compressed air from the tank is released into the exhaust system feeding the turbo to quicken response. And because Volvo’s Drive-E powertrains are engineered to deliver efficient power, the PowerPulse technology is a performance benefit that doesn’t come at the expense of fuel consumption. The D5 twin-turbo diesel engine with PowerPulse is currently available on Volvo’s 90-series models, including the XC90, S90, and forthcoming V90 Cross Country." What is the purpose of a turbo blanket? What are the advantages of using a turbo blanket? This video involves two tests, one completed by myself and Humble Mechanic, the other as a thesis for a masters at UT Austin. For our tests, we seek to see if there are any major temperature differences between using a turbo blanket, versus not. This can mean different cabin temperatures, lower hood temperatures, lower engine bay temperatures, and even lower intake air temperatures. The idea of a turbo blanket is that it keeps all the exhaust heat contained within the turbocharger, rather than radiating out from it. This means more heat is contained as useful pressure, and that pressure spins the turbochargers. With more pressure, you create more power. Does it actually work? Let s watch and find out! And while turbo-lag is acceptable for many, Mazda was determined to minimize its effects. The SkyActiv engine uses a technology they’re calling “Dynamic Pressure Turbo” which uses a 4-3-1 exhaust and a set of valves that change exhaust airflow depending on the RPM. Along with a short exhaust manifold, valves to increase exhaust velocity, and a 4-3-1 exhaust, they aim to minimize turbo-lag while simultaneously maximizing performance and efficiency. The 4-3-1 exhaust is critical for exhaust scavenging, creating the “ejector effect” and helping pull out remaining exhaust gases from the previous firing cylinder. Well we re not quite sure, which is why, for science, we re going to find out. It s a situation you find yourself often in. You re driving home from work, and you see something in the road. Suddenly, a 300 foot tow-strap capable withstanding a 155,000 lb force is wrapped around your engine and you re wondering what happens next. To get to this point, a little bit of math can help. This video focuses on two questions: 1) How long does the tow strap need to be? 2) How strong does the tow strap need to be? Length and strength, long and strong. What s my prediction and what ends up happening? We send it over to BleepinJeep to find out! Engineering Explained is a participant in the Amazon Influencer Program. How Water Injections Systems Can Create More Horsepower A Detailed Explanation Of BMW s M4 GTS Water Injection Engine Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm The BMW M4 GTS is one of very few production cars to ever be fitted with a water injection system, used to take the twin-turbo I6 engine from 444 Horsepower up to 493 horsepower, using the beauty of evaporating water to do so! From BMW, here s how it all works: "Water is injected as a fine spray into the intake manifold plenum chamber where it evaporates, significantly lowering the temperature of the intake air. This reduces the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber, which also reduces the risk of knock, allowing the turbocharged engine to operate with higher boost pressure and earlier spark timing. The result is increased power and torque, and a substantial improvement in efficiency. Despite the extra power output, thermal stress on all performance-related components is reduced. All of these features ultimately help to diminish wear and prolong engine life. The benefits of water injection can be utilised in various ways, depending on engine and vehicle type. In particular the engineers have considerable latitude when deciding how to balance their priorities between increased power and fuel efficiency. If water injection is taken into account in the design of a high-performance engine right from the start, it is possible to use turbochargers with a higher boost ratio and compression ratio. Water injection provides a particularly effective way of raising the knock threshold in this range, allowing the compression ratio to be increased. This makes it possible to optimise the power output of the turbocharged engine over a wide operating range. The lower the octane rating of the fuel, the greater the potential of this technology. In terms of practical implementation, the BMW M division’s engineers opted for an arrangement whereby three water injectors in the intake plenum chamber each supply water to two of the straight-six engine’s cylinders. This solution makes for uniform water distribution and a compact system design. On safety grounds, the BMW M water injection system is equipped with a sophisticated self-diagnosis system. If the water tank runs dry, or in the event of a system malfunction, appropriate measures are taken to protect the engine. Boost pressure is reduced and the spark timing is retarded, allowing the engine to continue to operate safely at reduced power. Even when things are working normally, a variety of precautions are taken to keep the system fully functional. Every time the engine is switched off, all the water in the hose system is drained into the tank to prevent system components from icing up in sub-zero temperatures. The water tank is likewise frost-proof."
