With AWD, limited slip differentials front and rear, and wide tires, it has plenty of available grip. Major changes for the 2015 model year include a more rigid chassis, stiffer suspension, torque vectoring, and a tighter steering ratio. Overall, the changes lead to improved handling and better steering. This particular STI also features a COBB Stage 1 91-octane tune, which improves low end torque and overall power. I also test the 0-60 times before and after reflashing the ECU. Is the 2015 STI better than the 2014, and how does it drive with a tune? 2016 Jeep Cherokee - Deep Snow & Off-Road Review. The 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4X4 with Jeep Active Drive II features a 3.2L V6 engine and a 9 speed automatic transmission, with hill descent control and an off-road suspension. The Select Terrain system allows for choosing between Auto, Snow, Sport, and Mud/Sand, altering the way the vehicle performs to handle different scenarios. There is a rear axle disconnect, meaning 100% of the torque up front, and the vehicle is capable of sending 100% of the torque to the rear. Snow mode prefers a 60/40 F/R torque split, while sport mode s the opposite with a 40/60 F/R torque split. A brake lock differential uses the brake to try and mimic a locking differential, reducing wheel slip to allow more torque to be sent the wheel with the most traction. Can a tire have high grip and a low rolling resistance? I talk with Michelin at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas to find out! When it comes to designing for efficiency, there are five major forces which a vehicle needs to overcome: aerodynamics, internal friction, gravity, inertia, and finally, rolling resistance. Rolling resistance is the energy consumed by a tire as it travels over a specific distance. Energy is lost as heat when the tire deforms on the road, creating the contact patch, and then returns to its original state as the tire continues to rotate. How much energy is lost is a result of the tire’s hysteresis. The goal is to reduce rolling resistance while still maintaining grip. Silica compounds, first invented by Michelin, have low energy losses in the low frequency range, meaning low rolling resistance, but high energy losses in the high frequency range, meaning they have high grip. As a result, it truly is possible to have tires which exhibit low rolling resistance and yet all the while high levels of grip. Michelin is one of many partners that plays an important role in the Shell Eco-marathon, dedicating a manufacturing plant for two days per year just for making the ultra-low rolling resistance tires used by the teams. The Shell Eco-Marathon is a competition where students around the globe compete to design, build, and test vehicles with the goal of creating a vehicle that goes the furthest distance using as little energy as possible. Under the hood is the 6.2L engine LT1 engine, first introduced in the new Corvette. Resting in the Camaro, it does include some unique components, such as the tri-Y exhaust manifolds. What Is An Air Suspension? How Do Air Suspension Systems Work? What Is A Magnetic Suspension - https://youtu.be/hiaMpG4Y640 Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 An air suspension simply replaces the springs of a vehicle (whether it be coil, , etc) with air springs. Instead of a coil spring, you have a rubber membrane which is inflated with air, which the vehicle is resting on. The pressurized air is what is holding the vehicle up. This video will compare rolling lobe air springs versus convoluted springs, open versus closed air spring systems, and look at the advantages and disadvantages of air suspension systems. The benefits of an air suspension include: 1. Ingress/Egress: Ram 1500 has a specific mode which lowers the truck as much as possible for getting in or out. It doesn’t drive at speed at this ride height. 2. Off-road use. There are two modes for raising the suspension, which is great for off-road use as it increases the ground clearance, approach angle, breakover angle, and departure angle of the vehicle. 3. Better aerodynamics. The Ram 1500 will automatically lower when driving on the highway to reduce drag and improve fuel economy. 4. Load-leveling. If you put a significant amount of weight in the truck bed, steel springs means the rear will now ride lower. With load leveling the truck will automatically raise the truck bed to the targeted ride height. 5. Improved ride quality. This is a byproduct of how the system behaves. As you increase payload, the system increase pressure to maintain a set ride height. By increasing the pressure, it increases the spring rate. This maintains a fairly constant ride frequency, which means the truck will feel pretty much the same from a comfort standpoint regardless of how much weight it’s carrying. In this scenario, the volume within the airbag remains constant, while the pressure increases with added load. 6. Prevent getting high-centered. Some off-road vehicles equipped with air suspensions will have a mode that lifts the vehicle further than it’s highest ride height in order to allow it to not get stuck. Just as important as the build quality of these products is knowing what to do with the information the sensors provide. Live data is fairly limited in Formula E, however after each race engineers dive through all of the information each sensor provides. The decisions made using this information can easily mean the difference between finishing on or off the podium. One critical item to measure is battery temperature, as it greatly impacts the performance of the vehicle. If the battery temperature reaches about 55 degrees Celsius, the car’s electric regeneration is limited, reducing efficiency and changing the brake bias. If the cell temperatures reach 62 degrees Celsius, the performance of the vehicle is automatically reduced. And finally, if the temperature reaches 64 degrees, the car stops. What do you do if the battery temperature is getting too hot? The easiest solution is of course to use less throttle, but this could likely mean giving up your position. An alternative method is to reduce battery regeneration, which adds significant heat to the battery pack under braking as it’s using the electrical motors to put energy back into the battery to slow the vehicle down. By using the mechanical brakes, the heat can be displaced elsewhere, however this of course means you’ll have less energy overall than your opponents. If there’s enough juice in the battery and only a few laps remaining, it’s a strategy that can pay off. If battery energy is low however, sacrificing regen could mean running the battery dead. Battery temperature and the car’s performance have to be carefully balanced in order for a team to have an advantage. Why Some Nissan Engines Do Not Need A Throttle Body - VVEL How VVEL Works - Variable Valve Event & Lift Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) is Nissan s valve system capable of operating an engine at any RPM with the throttle wide open. The throttle does exist for as a safety back-up incase any systems fail, and also has other minor uses, however the engine can operate without it s use at any load, and any RPM. This is done by varying how much the intake valves open during the intake stroke. For low load/RPM use, there are less pumping losses as the piston does not have to fill the intake manifold with a vacuum to draw in air. Atmospheric pressure is available right outside the intake valve. For mid load/RPM, response is immediate as you don t have to wait for the atmospheric pressure to travel through the intake manifold. For high load/RPM, you can open the valves as much as the design allows, giving you more power and torque versus single cam engines which cannot vary valve lift. Changing the final drive ratio heavily impacts the way the car behaves. If you increase the final drive ratio, each gear will have greater wheel torque, while sacrificing top speed. If you decrease the final drive ratio, each gear will have a higher top speed, however deliver less torque. Raising the final drive ratio also means you ll be at higher RPM in your top gear, raising your engine s speed on the highway. You ll also need to correct the speedometer. It is not correct to add resistance to the normal force on the rear tires to determine if the wheels can spin. A vehicle sitting stationary in strong headwind could still do a burnout (assuming the headwind doesn t create a bunch of downforce). The only thing that matters for spinning tires is whether or not you can exceed F = u*N (the maximum force the tires can apply, based on available traction). N, however, gets a bit complicated, and is dependent on at least four factors: 1. Weight distribution. 2. Load transfer due to acceleration. 3. Downforce on the car. 4. Load transfer due to wind resistance. Ignoring aerodynamics, the vehicle needs to exceed a rear wheel force of 2368.7 lbs (10.54 kN) to spin the tires, regardless of vehicle speed. Because the engine alone can create 90% of this force at 100% throttle at 5300 RPM (engine speed at 160 mph), adding in electric motors will be more than enough to spin the tires at 160 mph, even accounting for downforce. The difference turns out to be about 1%, but it s important that the conclusion is reached using the correct logic. Why would Koenigsegg produce a vehicle without a transmission? Aside from the efficiency and weight benefits of having no transmission, the Regera can actually spin it s tires when traveling as fast as 160-170 mph, meaning that any more aggressive gearing would provide no better acceleration for speeds up to about 170 miles per hour. Put simply, it has so much torque that aggressive gearing isn t needed, and this video has the math to prove it. The Koenigsegg Regera features a 5.0L V8 producing 1,100 horsepower, and three electric motors producing an additional 700 HP. Combined, the HP curves allow for a peak of 1,500 HP.
