Not that long ago I did a video about inspecting your suspension for faults. I used my 1993 Acura Vigor for this video. In the video it was clear that my upper control arms, axles, and struts needed attention. This video answers to those issues and is a step by step representation of the process of replacing these components on my Acura Vigor. There aren t many Acura Vigors out there, but there are plenty of Honda Accords. In fact, the information in this video will apply to Honda Accords from 1990-2002. To me this doesn t seem like a difficult job, but you may have to deal with rust and other issues that older vehicles often present as you ll see in the video. I m also fortunate enough to have a wall mounted spring compressor that makes things easier. If you don t have access to one of these spring compressors, I d recommend you take the struts to a shop that has one. You would only pay a fraction of the cost of the full job if you were just having the struts changed out. Something to consider if you re looking to do this job yourself. That said, be sure to follow safe repair procedures to avoid injury. Outside of that, you d be saving yourself quite a bit of money doing this work yourself. I can attest to the fact that the ride was greatly improved after I did these repairs. Can t wait to put some new tires on to finish the job. Camera: Brian Kast Thanks for watching! **Sponsored Video** I teamed up with Advance Auto Parts and Moog on this one. This 2004 Jeep Wrangler came in with a noise from the front end that turned out to be a broken stabilizer link. While we were there, I decided to do a complete suspension inspection to look for other issues. We may be going back to do those rear stabilizer links at some point as a result of what we found. I ended up replacing the stabilizer links on both sides as well as the bushings. The noise is gone and the Jeep corners much better now thanks to those Moog problem solver parts. You may run into some trouble getting the old stabilizer links off. I used an air hammer. You may be able to use just a hammer. Penetrating oil would be your friend too. In all, the job isn t too difficult. Just be careful of the finish on the front of the Jeep when replacing the stabilizer bushings. Camera: Brian Kast Thanks for watching! Here is the second installment of the 1998 Ford Contour Fixing it Forward project. In this video I repair the AC connector going to the compressor clutch. In addition I diagnose a bad blower motor. I also repair the rusted brake line that was leaking. I do NOT recommend the use of compression fittings on replacement brake lines. This is why I used a double union flare. It would have been nice if my Harbor Freight flare tool was able to do the job, but instead I got a good workout for my pecks with the Eastwood tool. I wish they made a more portable version of it. Anyway, I hope this video provides some enlightenment as well as entertainment. Previous Video in the series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM8LA5Yygjk Camera: Brian Kast Thanks for watching! Now that I ve tried the tool, I can see why. Some of you might point out that the tool didn t work for every application, the Ford wheel bearing for instance. Well, if 20 tons and heat couldn t do it, I m not surprised the Hub Grappler had trouble as well. When this tool works, it works. It can also save a bunch of time. It can also do many of the jobs that used to require a shop press. For me, it s a great tool. If you do this kind of work a lot, I suggest you get one. If you don t do this work a lot, find someone you can borrow one from. The time you spend tracking them down will be more than made up for when you go to use the tool. Recently I got a new RL-8500 brake lathe from Ranger. Now that I have the lathe, I ve been machining just about everything I can get my hands on. This is the first set of drums I ve machined with this new machine. I d say the process went very well. I wish I had also machined the front rotors as that would likely have eliminated the noise I was chasing, but live and learn I suppose. Still, I think this is a great guide if you re looking to learn how to machine brake drums. I realize that these days machining is hardly ever done. Most times people are just replacing brake components of this type. Though that may be easier, and in some cases more cost effective, machining is still a viable option for brake service. Especially if the brakes you require are hard to find or of better quality than the replacements you re looking at. In summary, don t give up before you start. Consider machining as a cost effective alternative to replacement. Camera: Brian Kast Thanks for watching! While at SEMA 2015 I had the honor of meeting Kenji Sumino, president of GReddy, and Sung Kang who you may know as Han from The Fast and the Furious franchise. Kenji found out that Sung was building a 1973 Datsun 240Z as a project car. Kenji has a special affection for these cars and reached out to Sung about helping him with the build. I m sure you wouldn t say no either. During the interview I could tell that both Sung and Kenji were very passionate about the car. It was infectious. In fact, I want to go out and get one of these cars now. As a matter of fact, the first car I ever worked on as a professional mechanic was a 1972 240Z. It seems we have something in common. The cherry on top is the night this interview was filmed, Kenji and Sung won best in show. I hear it was a heck of a party. Congratulations guys. It s an amazing car and is well deserved. I ve since used it in many other projects and I have to say, I m very happy with it. Now, 20 tons may seem like a lot, but it may not be enough for every application. The Ford rear wheel bearing comes to mind. Although I think a 100 ton press would have also struggled in that situation. Something else to consider is all the other equipment you re going to need to use your press. Sunex has done a great job with this press and given you plenty to get started with, but you may find that you ll also want to pick up a bearing splitter and perhaps some other steel blocks for positioning things in the press. That said, I think this press works very nicely and I m always happy to say that something was made in the USA. Camera: Brian Kast Thanks for watching! Here s another video in the series with Jerry Hall s 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R. In this episode I replace the left lower ball joint and left front wheel bearing. I was intent on working the brakes into this video, but as you can see, things didn t quite turn out the way I had planned. No matter. The work got done and we are one step closer to completing the repairs on this car. To be honest, it ll be a few episodes before we wrap this one up. Stay tuned. I can see how this might be confusing, so I ll do my best to explain. The parts of the video where I replace the cam and crank sensors was shot just after Jerry picked up the car in early December 2015. The part where I replace the control arm and air tube were shot in late March 2016. I realize this may be a bit confusing, but I wanted the series to end after the final video. I didn t want to have to come back with another video AFTER the final video which will air next week. This way the series concludes with the next episode. Wivco Design Shake-N-Break™: https://www.wivco.com/store/p3/Shake-N-Break™.html Wivco Design Website: http://www.wivco.com Recommended Air Hammer: https://www.jbtoolsales.com/ingersoll-rand-121-k6-air-hammer-kit-401-shank-super-duty#oid=1002_1 Wivco sent me this tool a little while ago. I was waiting for an opportunity to try it out. When this RL came in for a brake job that required me removing the rotors, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to try out the tool. It worked flawlessly as you see in the video. I think I ll put my impact driver away the next time I need to remove rotor screws. I m sure this also works on other screws that might give you similar trouble. I was sold after it got these rotor screws loose. Wivco did not pay me to say any of this. When a tool works, I m happy to talk about it. Thanks for watching!
