In this video, we document the incredible recovery mission of Bruce s broken down Jeep Wrangler. Stranded on a snowy mountain road, unable to move due to mechanical failure, options are limited. But our team of expert off-roaders were up for the challenge. With the help of specialized equipment, including winches and tow straps, we set out to recover Bruce s Jeep. The journey was not easy, as the heavy snow and steep terrain made for dangerous conditions. This Sport UTV sit 50-inches wide and has a longer than expected 90.6-inch wheel base. This gives the driver and passenger a little more balance, stability and builds confidence on the trail. Not only does this build driver confidence, but for a tall or larger rider it gives you more room in the cab. Can-Am calls this its improved Ergo-Lok cockpit. Storage can be tough in such a small platform, but as usual Can-Am makes the best of its space with an “over the steering wheel” glove box of sorts and the traditional glove box in front of the passenger. There are also twin cup holders in the floor well within reach of the driver and passenger and a console in between the driver/passenger right in the center of the dash top for miscellaneous items. A total of 5.3 gallons of storage is included in the cab. In my test unit, the 2018 Can-Am Maverick Trail 1000, when you get in and comfortable the three-point seat belts and seat bolstering do make you feel confident of any trail ahead. The Maverick Trail has a nice digital dash that also provides information from speed to engine RPM and gear selected, as well as fuel and drive situation, whether it be 2WD/4WD, etc. This Maverick Trail even has an unlocking rear differential for those situations that call for it, like your prize lawn or that fresh gravel on the drive. Our ride location started near the High Uinta Mountains outside of Salt Lake City, Utah in a little area known as Christmas Meadows. Home to the Wasatch Ranger District, this small portion of Utah holds another incredible gem for those looking for a destination to ride. The Bear River Lodge here caters to the adventurous whether it be snow or trail riding and if you just want to see the beautiful scenery I am sure Jamie and Roger would love to have you at any time. They run a full-service lodge that is also first class. After a morning ride into this area by car, it was time to get into our gear and begin our adventure in the 2018 Can-Am Maverick Trail 1000. Rolling out the trails from Bear River Lodge, it was clear that you sit low in the Maverick Trail and it does not feel tippy. As the 75-horsepower Rotax V-Twin gets moving you will instantly recognize the power and torque we have come to love about this mill. Although we riding up to 9,000-10,000 feet in elevation and each breath could be somewhat labored for this Georgia native, the Rotax did give us all it could. Keeping in mind that every 1,000 feet of elevation cuts about 3% of the available power, we knew there was much more hiding inside that powerful mill. Our Maverick Trail was also equipped with Can-Am’s Dynamic Power Steering or DPS. This is a welcomed component on any ATV or SXS these days and I personally love it. I did have a chance to ride in a base model Maverick Trail that unfortunately does not have power steering and all I can say is that the money is well spent as you get older and the trails get tighter! It wasn t all that long ago that a 60-horsepower UTV was unheard of. Fortunately for all of us, the Sport UTV industry quickly took off and there has been no-holds barred horsepower war going on for the last five years or so. The results have been incredible for performance junkies. To show you just how far the industry has come, we ve put together a list of the five most powerful Sport UTVs available for the 2018 model year. Coming in at number 5 are the Polaris RZR XP models, which are powered by a 999cc ProStar 1000 H.O. Twin that produces a claimed 110 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and offers 71 pound-feet of torque. This engine is available in a variety of two and four-seat models, include the Polaris RZR XP 1000 and RZR XP 4 1000. Number 4 on our list are the Yamaha YXZ1000R family of Sport Side-by-Sides, which feature the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in the industry. Yamaha s 998cc Inline Triple produces a claimed 112 horsepower and has a screaming redline of 10,500 rpm. These are also the only Sport UTVs available with a sequential five-speed transmission, though Sport Shift models, which use steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, are also available. In the Number 3 position are the Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo models. New for 2018, these models are powered by a 900cc Rotax Triple that produces a claimed 120 horsepower. You ll find this engine is a host of two- and four-seat models, including the Maverick X3 Turbo, Maverick X3 MAX Turbo and Maverick X3 X RC Turbo. Sitting in the Number 2 spot on our list are the Polaris RZR XP Turbo models. These speed demons feature a 925cc ProStar turbocharged Twin that produces an eye-watering 168 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. You ll find this engine in models like the new RZR XP Turbo Dynamix Edition we tested earlier this year. Finally, we get to the most powerful Sport UTV engine available for 2018 – at least so far. The Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R models feature a 900cc Rotax turbocharged Triple that churns out an incredible 172 horsepower at 7,250 rpm. If that s not enough, this motor offers up 124 pound-feet of torque at 6500 rpm. Can-Am also boasts a ludicrous 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. You ll find this engine in models like the Maverick X3 Turbo R, Maverick X3 MAX Turbo R and the flagship Maverick X3 X RS Turbo R. Though the Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R models currently wear sthe crown as horsepower king, we d be awfully surprised if Polaris didn t have something in the works to challenge for the title. Textron Off Road also seems poised to make some noise in the coming months. And if we ever see a turbocharged YXZ1000R from Yamaha, well things could get very interesting. Recently I had some engine problems with the Fairmont that required a complete tear down. Instead of putting everything back the way it was, I ve decided to do some upgrades. One of the biggest upgrades is a new 67mm ceramic ball bearing turbo. This turbo will spool up faster and potentially make more power as a result. I m going to keep the old turbo so that I might one day to a head to head of these 2 turbos on the dyno. I think it would be great to actually proved whether or not this new turbo makes more power.
