Animal Rebellion (AR) activists vandalised hunting shops with paint as “hundreds” of fellow campaigners protested in central London on Saturday to demand a “plant-based future”. Campaigners poured red paint inside Farlows, a hunting and fishing shop on Pall Mall, and daubed paint on the windows of William Evans, a shooting supply shop in nearby St James’s Street, while others took and emptied milk from supermarkets. The group, an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, describes itself as a “mass movement using non-violent civil disobedience to call for a just, sustainable plant-based food system”. After putting out a message “calling all vegans to occupy London”, AR said protesters brought London’s West End “to a standstill” as people marched from Green Park to Piccadilly Circus. They are calling on Prime Minister Liz Truss and Environment Secretary Ranil Jayawardena to tackle what they call the “climate, ecological and cost-of-living crises”. Julia Hartley-Brewer questions Kai, a spokesman for End UK Private Jets, over the eco-group s fixation on personal aviation. This comes after an activist for the group was videoed pouring defacing a statue of Captain Sir Tom Moore. Spokesman Kai set fire to his arm during the opening session of this year’s Laver Cup at the O2 in London. The incident happened during the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman on the first day of the competition. Tsitsipas clinched the first set 6-2 and during the changeover a man ran on to the court and lit a fire, which briefly set his arm ablaze. A statue of the Queen on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square has been ruled out by Sadiq Khan for the foreseeable future. A spokesman said on Wednesday: “The Fourth Plinth will continue to showcase new works by world-class artists for the foreseeable future. There are planned Fourth Plinth exhibits for the next four years." MPs in the House of Commons had broadly voiced support for a statue of the late monarch on the vacant plinth. The Mayor s office said that the Mayor would support a statue of the monarch: "A statue of the Queen at a suitable location in London is a matter for the Royal family to consider, and of course the Greater London Authority stands ready to support them in their wishes." Julia Hartley Brewer clashes with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategist Sinead Rose after artist Samson Kambalu said his new sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square represents “standing up for justice and equality”. The Malawi-born artist’s piece, Antelope, depicts a 1914 photograph of European missionary John Chorley and Malawian Baptist preacher John Chilembwe, who fought against colonial rule. Speaking at the unveiling of the sculpture in central London on Wednesday, Kambalu told the PA news agency that he was “glad” he could carry forth Chilembwe’s message of fighting for a better world.
