The Duke of Sussex’s memoir is set to become one of the biggest books of the year, according to an industry expert, as it went on sale at half-price. Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller, told the PA news agency it is “quite normal” to have a “big hardback” that booksellers think will do well sold at half-price by major retailers. Harry’s controversial autobiography Spare is being sold for £14, not the recommended retail price of £28, in bookshops such as Waterstones and WH Smith as well as online at Amazon. Spare was first leaked in Spain, where it mistakenly went on sale last week, and a host of revelations and private details about Harry’s life and family have since emerged. Mr Jones said he believed Waterstones when the retailer said Spare had been one of its biggest pre-order titles of the past decade. More viewers watched BBC’s Happy Valley than tuned into the much-anticipated interview with the Duke of Sussex on ITV, according to overnight figures. Harry: The Interview drew an average TV audience of 4.1 million, based on overnight figures released by ITV. The broadcaster said the 90-minute programme, in which Harry was interviewed by Tom Bradby as part of the promotion for the duke’s memoir, Spare, ahead of its release on Tuesday, achieved the channel’s highest rating for a factual programme for more than a year. In comparison, the second episode of series three of BBC One’s Happy Valley, which started at the same time – 9pm on Sunday – and lasted 60 minutes, had an average audience of 5.3 million TV viewers, according to the overnight figures. Royal biographer Angela Levin says Prince Harry s behaviour is "inexcusable" and she "can t imagine how he s become so ridiculous." #talktv #talkradio

The Duke of Sussex has said he wrote his tell-all book Spare because of “38 years… of spin and distortion” and has not written anything “scathing” about members of his family. Harry claimed “planting and leaking” from other members of the royal family meant, in his mind, they had written “countless books” and “millions of words … dedicated to trying to trash my wife”. The duke also said in an interview with Tom Bradby on ITV that there was a “horrible reaction” from his family members when the Queen died. He said his brother “raised some concerns” about his marriage to Meghan Markle and of how his father the King blamed himself for his son’s struggles, telling him “I should have got you the help you needed years ago”. He labelled royals “complicit” in the “pain and suffering” the Duchess of Sussex faced, and told ITV’s Bradby he was speaking out in his memoir because “silence only allows the abuser to abuse”. Harry lambasted the British press throughout the sit-down interview on Sunday night, venting his frustration at the “conflict” he accused the media of creating, but saying his family had a part in this. He also told Bradby he loved his father and brother, but said: “At the moment, I don’t recognise them, as much as they probably don’t recognise me.”

A retired British Army colonel, a senior Taliban leader and a former UK national security adviser are among those criticising the Duke of Sussex over disclosures that he killed 25 people in Afghanistan. Colonel Tim Collins, known for a pre-battle speech he made in Iraq, said Harry has now turned against his “other family, the military”. Anas Haqqani, Taliban leader in Afghanistan, condemned the duke for describing those he killed as “chess players”, but added that not many who killed Afghans “have your decency to reveal their conscience and confess to their war crimes”. Lord Darroch, former national security adviser, said he “would have advised against” Harry revealing those details, while former commando Ben McBean told the prince to “shut up”. It comes as the duke faces an intense backlash after writing about his time in Afghanistan in his controversial memoir, Spare. Harry wrote that flying six missions during his second tour of duty on the front line in 2012 to 2013 resulted in “the taking of human lives”, of which he was neither proud nor ashamed. The Duke of Sussex has admitted he was “probably bigoted” before his relationship with Meghan Markle. In a new teaser for the CBS News interview which is due to air this Sunday, Harry tells interviewer Anderson Cooper he was “incredibly naive” about how the British press would treat his relationship with the American actress. “The race element” to the couple’s relationship had been “jumped on straight away” by the British press, he tells the programme, adding that he had no idea how “bigoted” the UK media was until his wife and their relationship were thrust into the spotlight. “What Meghan had to go through was similar in some part to what Kate and what Camilla, went through – very different circumstances,” the duke says in the 30-second clip released on Thursday. “But then you add in the race element, which was what the press – (the) British press jumped on straight away. “I went into this incredibly naive. I had no idea the British press were so bigoted. Hell, I was probably bigoted before the relationship with Meghan.” #talktv

The Duke of Sussex has spoken out again over the alleged confrontation between himself and his brother, the Prince of Wales. In a newly-released clip from ITV’s forthcoming interview with Harry, the duke said his brother was so frustrated during the incident which reportedly took place in 2019, he saw “the red mist in him”. “He wanted me to hit him back, but I chose not to,” he says of his brother who he earlier claimed in his book had physically attacked him – as was first reported by The Guardian. In the clip, released early on Friday morning, Harry tells Tom Bradby: “What was different here was the level of frustration, and I talk about the red mist that I had for so many years, and I saw this red mist in him.” The duke first recounted the confrontation in his autobiography Spare – an extract from which was leaked by The Guardian on Thursday. The newspaper reported the book claims the Prince of Wales grabbed Harry’s collar and knocked him to the floor, ripping his necklace and shattering a dog bowl under his back. The Duke of Sussex has said he wants his father and brother back during an ITV interview due to be released this Sunday, two days before his memoir is published. But in a separate interview with CBS News, set to air the same day, Harry also criticises Buckingham Palace over an alleged failure to defend him and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, before they stepped down as senior royals. The duke also reveals to the US broadcaster that he would not return to the institution as a full-time royal. Both CBS and ITV have released snippets of the duke’s conversations ahead of the full interviews being televised.
