Third world economies struggling to end child labour To see more go to http://www.youtube.com/user/journeymanpictures Follow us on Facebook (http://goo.gl/YRw42) or Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/journeymanvod) Nearly half of Nicaragua s population live below the poverty line. It means that working has become part of everyday life for hundreds of thousands of children, as their families struggle to make ends meet. A group of children smash stones into small pieces, risking blindness as chips of rock fly into the air. Officially, child labour is illegal in Nicaragua and the cooperative leader in one quarry is quick to deny that any children are working there. "It is prohibited for children to work as stone cutters. It s much too risky. Children should go to school, not work." But Anibal, a ten-year-old labourer, tells a different story. He has already spent a year in hospital after he was injured working at the quarry. "A pile of dirt fell from up high. It fell on me and injured my leg." Despite the objections of the Sandinista government, being one of the poorest countries in Latin America leaves families with little choice. Diana Espinoza, the local representative from Save the Children admits it is a very difficult situation: "there s a whole market with child labour at several levels". Many regard the Trust to be his greatest achievement: "it was like a calling", his son Peter says."I just think he got good heart", Dawa, an ex-student of the Khumjung school says. From schools to hospitals to providing fresh water, Hillary s contribution to this area knew no bounds. "I think he just said, this is the thing that I should do. So he did it", Dawa says gratefully and proudly. His son Peter and his stepmother, Lady June ,the custodian of Sir Hillary s Trust, differ in their views of best retaining Hillary s legacy. Somalia Pirates (2011): As Somali piracy refuses to go away, why does the international community seem powerless to stop it? Starving and desperate Somali fishermen are starting to suggest that maybe they don t want to. While they watch enormous international naval vessels patrol the high seas, they can t even afford to take their single vessel out of the harbour. For them it is obvious: the Western ships have reasons other than pirates for wanting to patrol these waters. A predominance of large warships that seem unsuited to the fight against piracy seem to support their claims. "These vessels are enormous; we have small maneuverable boats, we can get away fast", one pirate tells us. Problems with piracy started here when Somali fishermen hijacked foreign trawlers that were fishing in Somali waters without permits. Then, as now, European naval vessels protected these illegal trawlers, which practically cleaned out local waters of fish. "We re afraid of only one thing. Something much worse than cannons and bullets: hunger". Have Somali seas become an international playground for self-serving Western navies - testing arms, protecting illegal fishery or just polishing up their international image? Africa creates a new country July 9th To see more go to http://www.youtube.com/user/journeymanpictures Follow us on Facebook (http://goo.gl/YRw42) or Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/journeymanvod) Amidst turmoil and conflict South Sudan readies for independence on 9th July. But with little infrastructure, ongoing violence and a border that is not agreed with the North, it still has many problems to solve. "Everybody is waiting to see how it is going to go", says Majak of the South Sudan People s Liberation Army. Despite decades of violence in the past and looming conflicts of interest, the Southern leaders have passed the point of no return. The birth of their new nation will occur on Saturday. Reaching this point at all is a major achievement as George Clooney, a United Nations Messenger of Peace points out; "100 days ago the security council was here and not one of them thought they could pull together an election on time". Disputes over oil-rich border territories have cast a long shadow over South Sudan s big day. "When they see that there is good oil production there, they go and take it", claims Simon Kun, local Governor of the Upper Nile state. Minister of the CPA implementation, Pagan Amum, insists that Southern leaders will talk through remaining issues that will "define the relationship" with the North, including the "assets of the Sudan". For the sake of the people let s hope he s right. July 2011

Incorporated (1994): A report on the influence of Malaysia s ruling party UMNO in all aspects of Malaysian society. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: Malaysia s government is unashamedly mixing business with politics. It is a combination which seems a recipe for success. For 37 years massive economic growth has proved a persuasive combination for voters and the ruling Malaysian coalition party UMNO. Malaysia Incorporated , as politicians proudly call the country, encourages close business ties with the government, leading to UMNO control in almost all aspects of the Malaysian economy, from the media to construction. The only losers are those outside the ruling party. Everything is geared to benefit ethnic Malays and party members; to get a government contract, or even a university scholarship, having party membership is a must. Strict rules are enforced to keep the order; political rallies are illegal, and speaking out about the government s discrimination against Indian and Chinese minorities can lead to a spell in jail. ABC Australia speaks to ministers, experts, and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, to uncover the scope of influence that UMNO wields. Caste Wars (1994): India s caste system has caused societal injustice for years, and its influence still scars the country today. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: A woman in a brightly coloured sari crawls through a field of goats and cows with her gun at the ready. She is from India s poorest caste - the untouchables , or as they call themselves the Dalits - who have long been at the bottom of the country s historic caste system. Yet the Dalits are fighting back. Young Dalit women are learning to kill. They are gaining self-respect and, most importantly, protection in a world in which Dalit women are regularly beaten and raped by men from other castes. Yet it is not only the lower castes who are taking a stand; higher castes are arming their people and training their young after repeated attacks, and high caste students protest government plans to increase lower caste representation through positive discrimination. As India s ruling party faces crucial state polls, the country s battle lines are being drawn not only by religion but caste. Politicians can no longer afford to ignore the lower caste majority. ABC Australia reports on this split, speaking to the Dalits and their female army, leaders of upper caste communities, politicians, and Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, in an exploration of India s fractured society. Heroin Trade (1994): ABC Australia travels to Burma, modern-day Myanmar, to investigate the complications of the country s heroin trade, which forms part of the so-called Golden Triangle.
