Living with Drug Wars (2013): The violence of the Mexican drug war has taken on international proportions, recently attracting triad backers and smugglers in East Asia. This film looks at how Mexico got to such a state of affairs. With the city s death toll rising above Syria s, Mexico is on the verge of becoming a failed state. "Everybody is killing everybody", says local photographer Julian Cardona, who for thirty years has documented Juarez in terminal decline. In a city where no tourist or foreigner dares to come, locals are leaving in droves and many neighbourhoods lie abandoned and deserted. The remaining inhabitants barricade themselves behind high walls and barbed wire. Even funerals are no longer safe. "They know relatives or friends are going to be attending", says Julian. Unable to offer its population safety and security, the police force, guilty of widespread corruption, is unwilling to stand against the terror of the criminal gangs. Meanwhile, even innocent children are being caught in the crossfire. Arcelia Medrano tearfully recounts the brutal slaying of her child when gunmen accidentally walked into the wrong house. "They took my son to hospital. He was riddled with bullets." KRO - 5700 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world s most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Rags to Riches: Enterprising Filipino women turn clothing scraps into profitable products. Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures In the slums of Manila, a determined group of women are literally turning rags to riches. In a city where the gap between rich and poor is clear to see, this pioneering new project brings the two closer together. Taking leftover fabric from clothing factories before weaving them into rugs and handbags, Rags to Riches products have become the latest fashion accessory in Manila s high-end malls. It s founder, 27 year old Reese Fernandez, says her business works to "empower women" in the local community, "bringing back the dignity of the people" The women, many of whom used to live on a rubbish dump, now earn an income comparable to that of a nurse in the Philippines. Super Trawler: Enormous Dutch commercial fishing vessel seized by the Australian government For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=64862 When Dutch super-trawler The Margiris was given the go-ahead to catch millions of dollars worth of fish in Australian waters, her owners didn t realise they were sailing straight into a bureaucratic nightmare. This report charts the extraordinary course of events that culminated in the world s second largest trawler being left stranded and impotent thousands of miles from her native Holland. The Margiris owners were assured by Australia that they had permission to fish its seas. "Literally what they said was, we will back you up no matter what happens, if you follow the rules. And we said we can accept that of course". But what the ship s owners hadn t counted on was a perfect storm of political protest that brought environmental groups and recreational fishers together in a campaign that even threatened to destabilise the Australian government. In a bold move, the government sided with the people and anchored the super trawler for good. "We ve got no idea what the rules are now!" exclaims ship owner, Gerry Geen. So was this democracy in action, or political incompetence? Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 The English Electric Lightning is a supersonic jet fighter aircraft of the Cold War era, noted for its great speed. The aircraft had several distinctive design features, the principal of these being the twin engine arrangement, notched delta wing, and low-mounted tailplane. It is the only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft and was the first aircraft in the world capable of supercruise. The Lightning was renowned for its capabilities as an interceptor; pilots commonly described it as "being saddled to a skyrocket". Following English Electric s integration into the unified British Aircraft Corporation, the aircraft was marketed as the BAC Lightning. The Lightning was prominently used by the Royal Air Force RAF and the Royal Saudi Air Force. The aircraft was a regular performer at airshows, it is one of the highest-performance aircraft ever used in formation aerobatics. Following retirement in the late 1980s, many of the remaining aircraft became museum exhibits; until 2010, three examples were kept flying at "Thunder City" in Cape Town, South Africa. In September 2008, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers conferred on the Lightning its "Engineering Heritage Award" at a ceremony at BAE Systems site at Warton Aerodrome.
