They ve built a power plant 40 km from an active faultline and 8km from the capital Taipei; and experts say a disaster could kill over a million. Just along the fault lines of the Pacific Rim of Fire from Japan lies Taiwan -- another heavily industrialised, modern economy highly reliant on nuclear power. Ninety percent of the world s earthquakes occur along the Rim of Fire, so no wonder there are worries about a fourth nuclear plant being built on these shores. "If the reactor core melted down...about a million people would die of cancer", says Hiroake Koide from Japan s Kyoto University. The government is promising to hold a referendum on its future, but if the reactor doesn t go ahead the country s nuclear strategy is in question, along with the $9 billion already spent on the plant. And the state-owned power company, Taipower, would face bankruptcy, leaving no one to manage Taiwan s nuclear waste. It currently sits across the water on the tiny Orchid Island, quickly corroding and risking potential disaster for the native Tao inhabitants. "More than 70,000 barrels. Even a leak in a single barrel, doesn t that pose a huge risk to us?" asks Lin Shih-Lan, a Tao leader. As fears grow, can the nation learn from Fukushima before it s too late? ABC Australia

Kids on Death Row -Yemen: The heart-wrenching tales of Yemen s young children awaiting execution. For more information and downloads visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65146 Yemen s death row houses many children awaiting execution. Their stories of abuse and forced confessions are heart-wrenching. But now Yemen s Children s Parliament are calling their adult leaders to account. In the dark, grim cells of Sanaa Central Prison, hollow and tear-filled eyes stare through the grill with alarming despair. Nadim, 15 when he allegedly committed the crime, tells us of the torture he suffered before he confessed to premeditated murder. "They kept beating me with an electric cable until 1.30 at night, while I hung there." In theory nobody under the age of 18 can be executed in Yemen, but in a country with few birth certificates determining these young people s age isn t always easy. But the Children s Parliament, a unique organisation that allows child politicians to challenge their adult counterparts, are taking on the case of these death row kids. "We will stand by Nadim and innocent children like him, even if we have to camp outside the president s residence." Moaad s family offer him no support, following a conviction he strongly denies, because they fear a reprisal from the relatives of the murdered man. When asked why he thought three doctors judged him to be 16 and then changed their minds he says, "Bribes, by the adversaries." Yet the Children s Parliament has succeeded in putting a stop to 3 executions and Moaad hopes that he will be the next one. Behind the grand plans for stadiums, tourist attractions and new transport links lie whole communities being forcefully removed, often with less than 24 hours notice. "They call us invaders. We are workers of this city and we should have land rights", says Altair Guimaraes, who has mobilised mass support with fellow residents. The slum dwellers claim they can t afford to go elsewhere, and the compensation or relocation offered by the government are no replacement for their bulldozed homes. In this exclusive interview, Kim Hyon Hui reveals her experiences as North Korea s top female agent and discusses the nation s war cries. "I was in no position to argue if a mission was right or wrong", says Kim Hyon Hui. In 1987, she successfully carried out a mission to blow up a South Korean airliner, killing 115 people. Sentenced to death in Seoul, she was later pardoned by the South Korean government, who decided she was merely a brainwashed victim of the Kim cult. Horsemeat Scandal: Tracing the beginnings of widespread horsemeat selling to Ireland For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65134 This shocking report into the Irish roots of the horsemeat scandal goes undercover to reveal a systematic criminal harvest of thousands of horses, which netted millions and stretches well beyond Ireland s borders. "Nobody bothered asking the question, where are all the Irish horses going?", says animal rights activist Stephen Philpott, who ran a surveillance operation on gangs smuggling thousands of unwanted horses across the border for illegal slaughter."Five years ago horses like that were everywhere." It was all an unexpected consequence of the global financial crisis. When the bubble burst in Ireland, expensive horses were dumped and left to fend for themselves in parks, fields and by the side of the road. It wasn t long before criminal gangs got in on the action. One whistle blower, who is now in fear of his life, admits forging passports for the horses to get them across borders. He says these fakes were never checked. He also reveals how horses too weak to travel were routinely drugged to make sure they arrived at the abattoir still alive. "If you could get it up the ramp it would be on", he says. Alan Reilly, CEO of the Food Standards Authority, explains how "there are over 26 countries in Europe who are now involved". But in this scandal, nobody - from the supermarkets to the suppliers - is accepting blame. Cosmic Journeys examines the great promise of the Voyager mission and where it will lead us in our grand ambition to move out beyond our home planet. The two Voyager spacecraft are part of an ancient quest to push beyond our boundaries... to see what lies beyond the horizon. Now tens of billions of kilometers from Earth, two spacecraft are streaking out into the void. What will we learn about the Galaxy, the Universe, and ourselves from Voyager s epic Journey to the stars? December 19, 1972... the splashdown of the Apollo 17 crew capsule marked the end of the golden age of manned spaceflight. The Mercury.... Gemini... and Apollo programs had proven that we could send people into space... To orbit the Earth.... Fly out beyond our planet... Then land on the moon and walk among its ancient crater. The collective will to send people beyond our planet faded in times of economic uncertainty, war, and shifting priorities. And yet, just five years after Apollo ended, scientists launched a new vision that was just as profound and even more far-reaching. It didn t all go smoothly. Early computer problems threatened to doom Voyager 2. Then its radio receiver failed, forcing engineers to use a back up. Now, after more than three and a half decades of successful operations, the twin spacecraft are sending back information on their flight into interstellar space. Along the way, they have revealed a solar system rich beyond our imagining. The journey was made possible by a rare alignment of the planets, a configuration that occurs only once every 176 years. That enabled the craft to go from planet to planet, accelerating as they entered the gravitational field of one, then flying out to the next. The Voyagers carried a battery of scientific equipment to collect data on the unknown worlds in their path. That included a pair of vidicom cameras, and a data transfer rate slower than a dialup modem. ABOUT US Here at SpaceRip, we value the exploration of the unknown. We surpass boundaries for the sake of uncovering the mysteries of the cosmos and what they may tell us about our origin and our future. Stunning imagery illustrates Hubble Space Telescope part in a global scientific effort to understand how stars explode, what effect they have on the universe, and what they can tell us about its origins and future. From Hubblecast. Most stars in the Universe are small and insignificant, like our Sun They eventually fizzle and die without much drama. But a few light up the sky when they die, and in the process, they don t just tell us about the lives of stars: they create the building blocks of life, and help us to unravel the whole history of the Universe. These are the stars that end their lives as supernovae, explosions that are among the most violent events in the Universe.
