But she isn t under any illusions about the painful cause of her popularity: "when you re in front of cameras, your face must have a strong profile". In a bid to be as tall as Westerners, Chinese girls are even undergoing gruesome procedures to break and extend their legs. After a botched surgery, tour guide Qi Lixia ended up horribly disfigured. "The doctors tried to re-assure me. But my nose was completely deformed." But such is the pressure on young girls that she s prepared to go under the knife again: "Looking good helps me in my job". "When the Islamists took control it was like a ghost town, a dead city. Everyone was inside their houses, from fear of reprimand, fear of humiliation, fear of being brutalised, fear of violence" Hamadou Maiga says of life under the Islamists. He s back in Timbuktu, trying to help people rebuild their lives after ten months of occupation. But it won t be an easy journey; the fanatical Islamists left damage that cannot be undone. Ancient manuscripts for the 11th century, historic Mosques and Islamic shrines were all destroyed or desecrated because they did not fit with the invaders orthodoxy. The people have also been left with indelible marks. "They beat us 100 times. Four of them took turns, 25 each" Che says, describing the lashing meted out to him and his girlfriend when it was discovered they d had a child out of wedlock. It was a reign of terror that meant when the French arrived they were welcomed in as liberators. The worry is that while the French have pushed the jihadis back to their desert hideouts, the fight in Mali hasn t ended. Terrorist attacks have replaced out and out warfare. "The great fear is that the Sahara will become like another Afghanistan, just a breeding ground for extremism and terrorism." Driven from their land, they work in mines as slaves in a desperate bid to protect themselves from rape. "They came into houses and raped and killed children. They raped my two-year-old daughter," recounts Irene, who is now living in the UK. Since 1997, various militias have been fighting for Congo s vast mineral wealth in a bitter conflict for which women are largely paying the price. "Women are the biggest victim because they are raped every single day." Forced to work at gold and other mines in conditions of slavery, women are caught in the crossfire of competing militias who launder the minerals and smuggle them out of the region to be processed for manufacture by respectable corporations. Despite the vast wealth generated by their work they eke out a meagre existence, sometimes being paid nothing at all. Meanwhile the rapes continue. With companies still not required to say where the minerals they use originate from, no one is taking responsibility. "They have to stop what is happening there. No one should suffer like that." This report reveals new details on what Ben Zygier did to prompt such a clandestine and brutal fate. This is the frosty response from former Mossad agent Rami Igra when questioned about Prisoner X, trying once again to draw a close to this embarrassing affair. But the question remains: what landed Prisoner X in jail and why the need for such secrecy? The cover story was that it would compromise national security, but as Aluf Been, Editor in Chief of Haaretz newspaper in Israel, points out, "you have to ask yourself if the main issue here is protecting the reputation of the relevant services". The reality is an incredible story of a botched Mossad operation that would have left the organisation with red faces. Zygier is described by Igra as, "a guy who tried to play a hero". In trying to prove himself as a key operative he unintentionally handed out information on an Israeli source to a key member of Hezbollah, scuppering a key Israeli objective to recover the bodies of three soldiers killed in the invasion of Lebanon.
