The Living Goddesses (1998): A personal look into Nepal s world of living goddesses and stolen childhoods. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures At the centre of an ecstatic throng a nine year-old girl is paraded through the streets. Until she reaches puberty this little girl will bless the devoted. It’s hard for her family, but they have faith in the priests who identified her as an incarnation of the Kumari goddess when she was just three. “Since my daughter is a God I know we shouldn’t miss her, but we do. She doesn’t think about us much… when I see her she just says hello and leaves.” The roots of the tradition are less than holy: the result of 18th-century kings devoting young girls to God in atonement for their abuse of children. The age limit is troubling too; after all, what does a Goddess do when she’s no longer revered? Meeting a teenage Kumari we find her cleaning – she has no other employable skills. Slaves of the Caliphate: ISIS is infamous for its use of slavery, especially targeting women. A young woman negotiates to free Yazidi women held captive by Islamic State fighters in Northern Iraq. Subscribe to Journeyman for daily current affairs and science reports: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=68197 It s the story that exposed the true depravity of the Islamic State: thousands of defenceless girls captured as slaves. This emotional expose meets the woman desperately trying to save the Yazidi girls. "Today is female slave market day. It is distribution day. With the permission of Allah everyone will get a share", cries the brazen fighter, reclining in a video that shows the casual barbarity of the Islamic State s army. Meanwhile, chased onto Mount Sinjar and executed en masse, Yazidi girls are captured as slaves to the so-called Islamic Caliphate. "I saw everything, I saw girls being raped, I saw their torturing, I saw them separating children from their mothers, some were 5 and 6 years old", says a 21 year-old-girl who managed to escape unimaginable horrors at the hands of one IS fighter. This is the cruel fate that befell the defenceless Yazidi people, caught in the horrifying path of destruction. Another goes on to describe in disgust how the blood of Yazidi girls is taken to treat wounded fighters on the frontline. Listening to her story is Kurdish activist Nareem Shammo, a woman determined to free the thousands of young girls still captive. "I will continue this work until the situation changes", she insists. The Spirit of Survival (1999) - Yaroslavl’s struggling state-owned tyre factory turns into an unexpected success story. Subscribe to Journeyman for daily current affairs and science reports: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=9136 When the rouble collapsed its tyres were suddenly a quarter of the cost of their imported competition. With a touch of enterprising marketing from the new management Yaroslavl’s tyres are being bought and sold everywhere. The workers that used to get paid in inner tubes and food parcels are now getting regular pay-packets. There is even a factory hospital where employees and their families enjoy the most hi-tech equipment for miles around. But cold market principles do apply. Yevgenia, the hospital’s radiologist, has 30 years experience, yet she gets paid less than a cleaner. Like most people in Yaroslavl, she gave-up any hope of being rich along time ago. “At times we get more, but then they stop raising salaries… but we keep living and the hospital can still treat the patients, this is what matters.” In towns like Yaroslavl private citizens might just succeed where Governments have failed. I don t want to alarm you, but there s a massive galaxy heading our way and will collide with us in a few billion years. But aren t most galaxies speeding away? Naw, I’m just kidding. I totally want to freak you out. The Andromeda galaxy is going to slam head first into the Milky Way like it doesn t even have its eyes on the road. This collision will tear the structure of our galaxy apart. The two galaxies will coalesce into a new, larger elliptical galaxy, and nothing will ever be the same again, including your insurance premiums. There’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. It’s like those “don’t text and drive commercials” where they stop time and people get out and have a conversation about their babies and make it clear that selfish murderous teenagers are really ruining everything for all of us all the time. And now that we know disaster is inbound, all we can do is ask WHY? Why this is even happening? Isn t the Universe expanding, with galaxies speeding away from us in all directions? Shouldn t Andromeda be getting further away, and not closer? What the hay, man! Here’s the thing, the vast majority of galaxies are traveling away from us at tremendous speed. This was the big discovery by Edwin Hubble in 1929. The further away a galaxy is, the faster it’s moving away from us. The most recent calculation by NASA in 2013 put this amount at 70.4 kilometers per second per megaparsec. At a billion light-years away, the expansion of the Universe is carrying galaxies away from us at 22,000 km/s, or about 7% of the speed of light. At 100 million light-years away, that speed is only 2,200 km/s. Which actually doesn t seem like all that much. Is that like Millenium Falcon fast or starship Enterprise Warp 10 fast? Andromeda is only 2.5 million light-years away. Which means that the expansion of the Universe is carrying it away at only 60 kilometers per second. This is clearly not fast enough for our purposes of not getting our living room stirred into the backyard pool. As the strength of gravity between the Milky Way and Andromeda is strong enough to overcome this expansive force. It’s like there’s an invisible gravity rope connecting the two galaxies together. Dragging us to our doom. Curse you, gravity doom rope! Andromeda is speeding towards us at 110 kilometers per second. Without the expansion of the Universe, I’m sure it would be faster and even more horrifying! It’s the same reason why the Solar System doesn t get torn apart. The expansion rate of the Universe is infinitesimally small at a local level. It’s only when you reach hundreds of millions of light-years does the expansion take over from gravity. You can imagine some sweet spot, where a galaxy is falling towards us exactly as fast as it’s being carried away by the expansion of the Universe. It would remain at roughly the same distance and then we can just be friends, and they don’t have to get all up in our biz. If Andromeda starts complaining about being friend-zoned, we’ll give them what-for and begin to re-evaluate our friendship with them, because seriously, no one has time for that. The discovery of dark energy in 1998 has made this even more complicated. Not only is the Universe expanding, but the speed of expansion is accelerating. Eventually distant galaxies will be moving faster away from us than the speed of light. Only the local galaxies, tied together by gravity will remain visible in the sky, eventually all merging together. Everything else will fall over the cosmic horizon and be lost to us forever. All things in the Universe are speeding away from us, it’s just that gravity is a much stronger force at local levels. This is why the Solar System holds together, and why Andromeda is moving towards us and in about 4 billion years or so, the Andromeda galaxy is going to slam into the Milky Way.

Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... Boats can’t reach high speeds because of the friction between the hull and the water. In 1877 Sir John Isaac Thornycroft, a brilliant British boat designer suggested that trapping air under a boat might reduce the friction problem. He tested his idea with a scale model of a flat bottomed boat with a recess underneath. Air trapped in the recess lifted the boat almost out of the water increasing its speed. Later he built a much more complex model using a clockwork mechanism connected to bellows, the bellows pumped air underneath the boat, as it passed through the water the air acted as a lubricant reducing the boat’s friction and once again increasing its speed. Sadly for Thornycroft his boat needed better engine technology than existed at the time. The patents were never exploited. Over half a century later another inventor took up the challenge and built the first full sized hovercraft. That man was Sir Christopher Sydney Cockerell. His dedicated belief in the air cushion principle earned him a place in the history books, as the inventor of the hovercraft. When he unveiled the first prototype of his extraordinary machine the press were amazed, the headlines called it the “Flying Saucer”. But they did not possibly believe it could work over water. So the scientists took it out onto the bay for its first ever flight over the sea. Cockerell was a well-respected engineer, he already had many patents to his name. He knew the hovercraft would work because of his early experiments, using an air blower, two tin cans, one inside the other, and a set of scales. Clip from the documentary “Extreme Machines - Hovercraft”. Watch it here - http://youtu.be/1sDMOa5jqHA

The Victorious Mafia - A cloak of silence descends on Sicily as the Mafia elude justice Subscribe to Journeyman for news and science reports every weekday: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures.html San Giuseppe’s lone policeman shows us a secluded house that was once rented by the nephew of the town’s Mafia boss. He kept a kidnapped 11 year-old in a dungeon at this house for 2 years. The boy was his bargain chip to stop his fellow Mafiosi from talking to the police. After 2 years the boy was eventually killed. As was customary they put his body in a bath full of acid. The boy did not put up much resistance, they said; after all he’d been in a hole for two years and he didn’t have any muscles left. Once again Sicily’s fishermen are trawling for more than prawns. Waiting on the dock is a black Mercedes - behind the darkened windscreen sits a man for whom ‘fruit de la mer’ means a nice fat box of smuggled narcotics. Those hunting down the Mafiosi say that people’s consciences have gone back to sleep. We find the women who are now risking their lives in the fight against the Mafia. Teresa Principato is investigating the Mafia, although her two predecessors were murdered by them. “It’s love for your country that forces you to continue, to prevent this sort of oppression, this cloak of silence." The sustained state offensive to the Mafiosi six years ago seemed to have worked. But in the world of drug deals and prostitution, the Mafia is as strong as ever. The Siachen Syndrome (1998) Kashmir waits for Armageddon as India tests its nuclear arsenal. The frontline is a battlefield like no other on earth, where the elements and not enemy fire accounts for 95% of all casualties. Subscribe to Journeyman for news and science reports every weekday: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures.html A ceasefire line was mapped out in the lower country but the politicians didn’t bother to negotiate a boundary here. It is after all, uninhabitable. But as the power struggle escalates, every bit of territory counts. The high altitude combat is costing each side $730 million dollars a year. At 19,000 feet both sides lose on average two soldiers a day to oxygen deprivation or frostbite. Those that are tough enough to survive often go mad with the ‘Siachen Syndrome’ - a result of the isolation, the constant bombardment, and the grim reality of having to kill the only other human beings they may see in their three month posting. Caught in the crossfire, a shell explodes overhead. Aimed at the small valley town of Athamuqam, these shells are designed to spray hundreds of deadly metal fragments. India’s test of a nuclear artillery shell has the population daily expecting Armageddon. We meet a truck-full of Kashmiris fleeing the besieged town in search of food. There is nothing low-key about this fighting; it’s incessant and deadly. The K2 postings are a lesson in the lengths India and Pakistan are prepared to go, to secure the next victory in Kashmir.
