Are You My Mother: As Australia announces a debate on re-opening international adoption, one woman tries to recover from her adoption trauma. Forty years on, one adoptee journeys back to her homeland, revisits the past and looks to changes needed in Australia s adoption system. Born into war, Sophie English was just 10 months old when her connections with her mother and motherland were broken. Now returning to Vietnam she meets Le Thi Can, a mother who relinquished a child. "I thought it was better for her to lose a mother than to lose her life", says Le Thi Can. "I hope you understand that as adoptees, we really do understand... we understand that it was the war, and that you did your best", Sophie responds, confronting emotions she had always repressed. Now, international adoption laws mean that those who would have been sent overseas in the past will stay in Vietnam. The Australian government wants to reopen adoptions from Vietnam but as advocate Deborra-Lee Furness warns, the focus must be on the child and their integration. "Every minute that that child is institutionalized or without a forever family they are being damaged." An exploration of the dangers and benefits of international adoption, this report is also a touching tale of a search for identity, and of making peace with the past. China and India - home to a third of humanity – both face a marriage crisis that will last for generations. A mere five years ago marriage patterns were normal in the two countries. Now in China 50m ‘guanggun’ – ‘bare branches’ – look doomed to bachelor-dom, while in India 500 year-old laws are being revised to allow men to marry out of caste, village and state. What has lead to this marriage squeeze? First, millions women have gone “missing”. A generation ago, a preference for sons and the greater availability of prenatal screening meant first Chinese couples, then Indian ones, started aborting female fetuses and only giving birth to boys. At its extreme, in parts of Asia, more than 120 boys were being born for every 100 girls. Now, the generation with distorted sex ratios at birth is reaching marriageable age. The result is that single men far outnumber women. If China had had a normal sex ratio at birth, its female population in 2010 would have been 720m. In fact, it was only 655m, compared with almost 705m men and boys—50m surplus husbands. Fertility rates then accentuate this distortion. When a country’s fertility rate is going down (as in India) younger cohorts of people will tend to be smaller than older ones. If men are older than women at marriage, as they usually are, there will be fewer potential brides than husbands because women will have been born later, when fertility is lower. Then there is a queuing effect. Men who cannot find a wife right away go on looking, and competing with younger men. As a result, the number of unmarried men piles up, as in a queue. By 2060, there could be more than 160 Chinese and Indian men wanting to marry for every 100 women. This is a ferocious squeeze in countries where marriage has always been a basic requirement for being a full member of society. It could be hugely harmful. Almost everywhere, large numbers of single men are associated with high rates of crime and violence. No one really knows how these two giant countries will react.
After experiments on the Eastern Front, the German Army is using poison gas for the first time on the Western Front. At the beginning of the 2nd Battle of Ypres, the wind blows in a favourable direction; the wide spread use of chlorine gas has a devastating effect on the French troops. Even the Germans are surprised by it. The incredible sacrifice of the Canadian troops make it possible to defend Hill 60 in the end. Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Docudrama about the gripping story and events leading up to the cataclysmic eruption of the volcano Krakatoa in 1883. On 27th August 1883 the uninhabited island of Krakatoa blew itself out of existence with an explosion the equivalent power of 150 million tonnes of TNT. The eruption was so loud that the sound was heard over a twelfth of the Earth’s surface, the shockwaves reverberated around the entire planet, seven times. This explosion also caused giant tsunami, the largest of them twice the height of those of 2004. These enormous waves wiped out 165 Indonesian towns and villages killing over 36,000 people. Within hours news of the disaster was transmitted around the globe, and scientists of the time struggled to comprehend the geological forces that caused the tragedy. Indonesia has so many volcanoes and earthquakes because of its geographical position. The archipelago that starts in Northern Sumatra stretches over 3,000 miles south. It has been created by the forces where two of the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s surface, meet. The ocean floor of the Indo-Australian Plate and the Asian landmass of the Burma Plate are in collision. As they push against each other the heavier ocean floor is forced underneath the lighter continental rock. Krakatoa lies directly above this subduction zone. This film reconstructs the true stories of survivors from their accounts and diaries, to piece together what happened in the months leading up to the most famous eruption of all time.

Anzac to Afghanistan: How Australia s WW1 Anzac legend has overshadowed the cost of war in Afghanisatan In Their Sights - On the ground in Afghanistan with Australian boots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7gYQrmRH3M WW1 Anniversary - postcards from the frontline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSl9guwcCEs For more of Journeyman s top stories this week: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlGSlkijht5gyYNkhTOmpP-3AKawhjkdv Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures for downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=68528&bid=2 The legend of the Anzacs bravery in Gallipoli has been celebrated by Australians for 100 years. But has their inspiring story of war masked a different reality for today s Aussie soldiers serving in Afghanistan? "I think it s hard-wired into most Australians that when we think about war, we think about boats turning up on a shore... we think about charging up a hill to kill an enemy", Australian veteran James Brown notes. Yet the legacy of the unsuccessful takeover of Gallipoli peninsula in 1915 seems to overshadow more recent conflicts, and few Australians would know exactly what troops have been doing in Afghanistan in the past 14 years. "If you were to put the Afghan battlefield and the Anzac battlefield side by side, you couldn t really get two more different situations", explains Brown. Here, soldiers talk about why they joined the army and went into combat zones, and what they took from their time at war. Candid reflections reveal a complex puzzle of similarities and differences in technology, medical treatment on the battlefield, and attitudes to war. As one Anzac veteran says: "I was 100% keen like all were in those days. There was more patriotism in those days than there is now". The challenges facing modern soldiers differ but some aspects of the soldier experience never vary, and the belief in the power of luck remains strong.
