As soon as you try and get into building information modelling (BIM) you’ll quickly come up against all kinds of big words and terminology that can throw you. In this 5 minute video, The B1M’s Co-Founder Fred Mills takes you through some of the main culprits, explaining what they mean. Information Model - Within a BIM process, project teams contribute information and data about a proposed built asset in a shared digital space called a common data environment (CDE). That information could include specifications, schedules, performance requirements, programmes, cost plans and so on (known as non-graphical information) and drawings (known as graphical information). The non-graphical information is linked to the graphical 3D model. When you explore and click on different parts of the 3D representation, you’ll be able to access the information about it. The whole thing is known as an information model. When you hear people say building information model or BIM model – this is what they mean. Data Set - Essentially data set is another term for the information model that we have just described. The model formed of graphical and non-graphical information in its entirety can be referred to as a data set. It will build in richness as more information and details are added over a building’s life-span. Of course data set itself is a broad term and may relate to collections of information produced, shared or stored by other organisations. Federate - This is a particularly serious sounding word for the reasonably simple concept of putting different information models (from different members of a project team) together into one. Federating information enables different members of the design team to work on their elements before overlaying them together to undertake clash detection and pick up issues with co-ordination before heading to site. It also gives all parties one clear source of structured information rather than lots of different pieces from many different people. Interoperability - In basic terms this means the ease with which different software programs talk to each other. In a BIM environment, with lots of different people creating different pieces of digital information that all need to come together, its key to work out file interoperability from the outset. You need to know if the format you are creating and sharing information in can be received, read and effectively used by your project team colleagues. Originator - Originator simply means the person or organisation that created and shared a specific piece of digital information in the first place. At BIM Level 2 (taking the Bew-Richards maturity levels referenced in the United Kingdom) where you produce a piece of data for use in a project you are known as its originator and you own that data, no matter where it is shared or used by other organisations thereafter. Attribute Data - Earlier we highlighted that non-graphical information is linked and referenced to the graphical 3D model. We highlighted that you could select an element then see all kinds of information about it. Well that information is known as its attributes and is hence called ‘attribute data’. Data Drop - All this means is the process of presenting fixed information at a given point or milestone in a project; for example when submitting planning permission or at handover. The British Standard guidance document PAS 1192-2 highlights a number of points in the project process were sets of information can be extracted from the information model. These are what we call data-drops. We have chosen to tackle the big terms here but there are many more out there. If you could look at the Moon orbiting the Earth from above, you’d see that it orbits once on its axis exactly as long as it takes to orbit once around our planet. It’s always turning, showing us exactly the same face. What’s it hiding? The Moon isn’t the only place in the Solar System where this happens. All major moons of Jupiter and Saturn show the same face to their parent. Pluto and Charon are even stranger, the two worlds are locked, facing one another for all eternity. Astronomers call this tidal locking, and happens because of the gravitational interaction between worlds. As you’re aware, the Moon is pulling at the Earth, causing the tides. In fact, the pull of the Moon is so strong that the ground itself rises up 30 cm, about a foot, as it passes by. It’s even more powerful on the Moon. The gravity from the Earth distorts the Moon into an oblong shape. The sides pointed towards and away from the Earth bulge outward, while the others are pulled inward to compensate. It makes the Moon football shaped. It’s no big deal now, but in the ancient past, shortly after its formation, the Moon was spinning rapidly. This meant that the part of the Moon bulged towards us was changing constantly, like water tides on Earth. Vast amounts of rock need to shift and change shape to bulge towards the Earth and then settle down again, and this takes time. The position of the bulges on the Moon were always a little out of alignment with the pull of gravity of the Earth. These bulges acted like handles that the Earth’s gravity could grab onto, and torque it back into place. Over time, the Earth’s gravity slowed down the rotation speed of the Moon until it stopped, forever. This same process happened on all the large moons in the Solar System. Because of its smaller mass, our Moon became tidally locked to the Earth billions of years ago. Now the process is continuing to make the Earth tidally locked to the Moon as well. In the distant distant future, the Moon will stop moving in the sky, and hang motionless, visible from only half the Earth. How distant? In about 50 billion years, long after the Sun has died, the Earth and the Moon will finally be tidally locked to each other, just like Romeo and Juliet, Fry and Leela, Pluto and Charon. Right, Universe? One of the most amazing is that Moon and the Sun appear to be almost exactly the same size in the sky and they’re both the size of your pinky fingernail held at arm’s length. These coincidences just keep piling up. Thanks Universe? There are two kinds of eclipses: solar and lunar. Well, there’s a third kind, but we’d best not think about that. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in between the Earth and Sun, casting a shadow down on the surface of our planet. If you’re in the path of the shadow, the Moon destroys the Sun. No, wait, I mean the Moon blocks the Sun briefly. A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. We see one limb of the Moon darken until the entire thing is in shadow. You’ve got the Sun, Earth and Moon all in a line. Where they’re like this, it’s a solar eclipse, and when they’re like this, it’s a lunar eclipse. If the Moon takes about a month to orbit the Earth, shouldn’t we get an eclipse every two weeks? First a solar eclipse, and then two weeks later, lunar eclipse, back and forth? And occasionally a total one of the heart? But we don’t get them every month, in fact, it can take months and months between eclipses of any kind. If the Sun, Earth and Moon were truly lined up perfect, this would be the case. But the reality is that they’re not lined up. The Moon is actually on an inclined plane to the Earth. Imagine the Solar System is a flat disk, like a DVD. You kids still know what those are, right? This is the plane of the ecliptic, and all of the planets are arranged in that disk. But the Moon is on another disk, which is inclined at an angle of 5.14 degrees. So, if you follow the orbit of the Moon as it goes around the Earth, sometimes it’s above the plane of the ecliptic and sometimes it’s below. So the shadow cast by the Moon misses the Earth, or the shadow cast by the Earth misses the Moon. But other times, the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned, and we get eclipses. In fact, eclipses tend to come in pairs, with a solar eclipse followed by a lunar eclipse, because everything is nicely aligned. Wondering why the Moon turns red during a lunar eclipse? It’s the same reason we see red sunsets here on Earth - the atmosphere filters out the green to violet range of the spectrum, letting the red light pass through. The Earth’s atmosphere refracts the sunlight so that it’s bent slightly, and can illuminate the Moon during the greatest eclipse. It’s an eerie sight, and well worth hanging around outside to watch it happen. We just had recently had a total lunar eclipse, did you get a chance to see it? Wasn’t it awesome? As much as 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water, representing one of the last great frontiers on this planet. We literally have only scratched the surface of what lies beneath the waves. And even of the species we have found, we know relatively little. Perhaps the greatest challenge we face in exploring the oceans is to get close enough to marine life to observe undisturbed natural behaviour. This could allow newinsights into life in the oceans, but it is a tall order given the noise disturbance and clouds of bubbles emitted by most diving equipment. So some scientists have now turned to freediver Frederic Buyle: they want to exploit his noiseless and calm method of diving to approach even shy animals and find explanations to some of the mysteries of marine life. His abilities are remarkable: he can descend to depths exceeding 50 metres and stay there for up to 4 minutes on a single breath. Responding to calls for help from researchers, Frederic has teamed up with the renowned underwater cameraman Christian Petron. Christian’s vast experience includes working on Luc Besson’s cult-film “The Big Blue” and “Atlantis”, but Frederic’s attempts to freedive with predators like great white sharks test even Christian’s impressive skills. In each episode, Frederic and Christian work closely with leading scientists trying to find answers to the mysteries of our oceans. To accomplish their task they also turn to locals who know the waters and their wildlife like the back of their hand. Local knowledge can prove invaluable in this game, perhaps even save his life. Adventure Ocean Quest combines science, nature and adventure in a way that is enthralling and captivating, yet informative. Frederic’s extraordinary abilities and experiences wow the viewer, while his close teamwork with renowned scientists gives unprecedented insights into the secrets of life in the oceans. This series allows the audience a window into the very real challenges of accessing and studying underwater life. It is a stunning aquatic spectacle and a rollercoaster ride of discovery and personal experiences that keeps viewers glued to their seats.

Fakarava Atoll is a true underwater paradise that stuns with its sheer diversity of marine life and particularly high populations of manta rays, grey reef sharks and sea turtles. It is one of the only places where big marine animals are found in such dense numbers. Its diversity and richness of wildlife is so unique that Fakarava is now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. But the survival chances of these colourful coral reefs are looking very bleak. They may be the biggest living structures on Earth, but they are dying 4 times more quickly than tropical rainforests. Three quarters of all coral reefs are under threat, and all of them could disappear within the next 50 – 100 years. Prof. Serge Plane from the French research center on Moorea “Criobe” is trying to piece together the interrelationships of coral reef dwellers in order to better understand why they are so sensitive to environmental change, and how they could be protected in the future. This ecosystem is so fragile and sensitive to change that once one link in a coral reef’s chain of life has been removed, it can have dire consequences for the entire reef. Working out how this chain works, and what makes this ecosystem so unique is instrumental to the quest of preserving it. Prof. Serge Plane has specialised in a very particular aspect of relationships amongst reef organisms: communication. He wants to find out how the animals communicate and how this serves their quest to survive. He has already accumulated a wealth of underwater recordings of sounds in a coral reef. But his normal approach requires him to place hydrophones in strategic static positions across the reef. It is an inefficient, limiting and labour-intensive approach. Frederic is able to increase the efficiency and success of Prof Serge Plane by approaching animals directly and respond to their behaviours. The scientist’s current recordings do not follow animals during different behaviours, so being able to selectively record behaviours could be an eye-opener for this type of research. As a noiseless freediver, Frederic is able to trigger certain behaviours and associated sounds by being in the water with the animals without influencing them with cumbersome diving equipment. For example, he is able to record alarm sounds by giving sudden chase to specific fish. So far, it has not been possible for Prof Serge Plane to record behaviour as specific as this because conventional diving gear makes too much noise. The team dives at every time of day and night at a specific spot on the atoll to observe different species during their own activity cycles, and to see how life on the atoll transforms at different times. But again, Christian and Frederic have to remain cautious and plan their expedition meticulously. Again, they make the most of local knowledge to prepare themselves for the task in hand. Polynesian mythology is full of marine life – it plays a very important role in local culture. Manta rays, for example, stand for freedom, while sea turtles personify wisdom and long life. Frederic and Christian meet Maitata, a pearldiver from this island. Few people could tell the team more about the local wildlife from the point of view of Polynesian peoples. Once again, the stories this experienced local man has to offer help Christian and Frederic to build a better and more accurate picture of what lurks beneath the waves in this area. Over their time working, Frederic and Christian repeat their dives on the atoll at different times of day and night. The night-dives can be a bizarre experience with an edge of the otherworldly about it. And the sharply reduced visibility does make these excursions particularly dangerous for Frederic – it would be all too easy to loose orientation and as a result risk his life. The combination of their observations of the reef at different times of day and night and the recordings of reef sounds prove invaluable to Prof. Serge Planes research. And as he builds up his database of recordings, the interrelationships of coral reef organisms becomes clearer. Frederic and Christian’ observations have allowed fascinating insights into the complex web of connections of this finely tuned ecosystem. Ultimately, it may be this kind of research that could help to preserve the world’s coral reefs well into the future.

Underwater filmmaker Thomas Behrend manages to search out this giant in the Pacific as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. He captures unique scenes of a creature that normally lives in the unreachable deep sea. In Florida Thomas also meets a real giant. Massive but gentle Manatees put a spell on Thomas. But then the filmmaker witnesses how an undercooled Manatee gets into danger. A race against time begins…
