This video shows you how to make Char Cloth for fire lighting. Char Cloth can be incredibly useful especially when you need to make a fire quickly. It is very easy to make, and you can use almost any cotton material. 100% cotton material will work best. I used a towel in this video. Just punch a hole in a tin lid (sweetie tin or tuna tin), add cut up sections of towel. Put on embers of a fire for 20 minutes. Take it off the fire and leave it to cool for 10 minutes and then you ll have Char Cloth! A sling is a weapon used to fire rocks farther and harder than could be thrown by hand alone. I made this sling from bark fiber that I made into cord. The cord was then tied in such a way to produce an area in the middle with three cords. A strip of the same bark fiber was woven between these to form a pouch. A loop was tied at one end of the sling and a knot tied in the other. To use it, the loop is slipped over the finger and the knot is held down with the thumb. A stone is placed in the pouch and the sling swung over head. At the appropriate time the sling is swung forward in a throwing action and the knot held in the hand is let go. This causes the pouch to open and the stone to fly (hopefully) towards the target. I hadn t used a sling for eight years but the first target I set up and filmed, a potsherd on a stick at 10 m, was hit first go! Next I set up a log at 20 m and required more practice. Targets of potsherds and tiles at 10 m were set up in a clearing. Tiles on sticks at 15 m were set up in a stretch of creek. The last shots are back in the clearing at 10 m. Learning to use the sling is difficult and practice is necessary. When aiming line up the swinging plane of the sling with the target to determine Y-axis aspect and use release timing to determine x-axis aspect. With timing (right handed) too early and the stone will got to the right, too late and it will go left. Practice to make it go at the right time. Use larger stones as they swing slower and are easier to time. Use smooth stones so they fly straight and don t cling to the pouch when released. The advantage of the sling is that it s easy to make, portable and the ammunition (stones) are every where. The disadvantages are it s difficult to learn to use accurately, noise and movement give it away when used, it can t penetrate a target like an arrow (unless using some kind of weighted dart) and it can t be fired in thick forest. Interestingly, the sling has a range comparable to a bow. From my research, the record for the longest sling shot was 505 m and that of the bow just under 500 m. Is it really necessary to have an Information Manager when working in a building information modelling (BIM) environment? Find out in this short video with Fred Mills, Co-Founder of The B1M. “The short answer is yes, but it doesn’t need to be a new appointment to your team” explains Fred. BIM demands a high degree of control and integrity around how data is created, organised and shared both within companies and within the project teams that they work for. The Information Manager (sometimes known as the “BIM Manager”) is responsible for managing that process. The role includes establishing and managing the common data environment (CDE) – a shared online space that everyone in the project has access to – and overseeing the process of information management and exchange between all parties. “It’s important to understand that the Information Manager isn’t the person that is designated ‘to do BIM’ for you” explains Fred. “BIM is a culture and a way of working that affects everybody, in all parts of an organisation. Information Managers ensure that information exchange and collaborative working are facilitated in the project process”. In the United Kingdom (UK), the need to appoint an Information Manager is made explicitly clear in the BIM protocol and the wider suite of British Government guidance documents. Those documents also make it clear that the role should be undertaken by an existing person within the project team; such as the Design Team Leader or the Main Contractor’s Design Manager. On a point of personal opinion, Fred explains that he doesn’t see a role for stand-alone BIM Managers who look after things like software platforms, in-house product libraries, training or project support: “Those who disagree are completely entitled to their view, but for me those things are essentially part of IT, the design management function or something for designated BIM Champions; people who are well placed within your organisation to assist and help with BIM implementation in the early stages, alongside their current role”. He goes on to recognise that for very large businesses, organisations at the very start of their implementation journey or on large projects, the business case for those stand-alone roles certainly does exist. Numerous courses and workshops exist specifically for Information Managers and Fred points out that these can be very useful for organisations or individuals adopting a more disciplined approach to information flow: “It’s a big, cultural step for many organisations and training and guidance are always worthwhile”. By night they memorise the Qur an, and by day they beg for food and money. We meet the Almajiri children trapped in a cycle of poverty and extremist influences. "They wake up as early as 3am or 4am to begin their Qur an studies until dawn at about 7am", describes teacher Abdullahi Lakare. In Northern Nigeria, over 7 million children live outside of the official school system. Instead, they are sent to schools where they learn to recite the Qu ran and are forced to beg. But these children are in danger of being used for criminal activities, and they are even recruited into terrorist groups such as Boko Haram.
